  1. Holy Cow! What a match!

UND take down EWU 3-1 to get the weekend sweep and clinch a spot in the conference tournament.

UND looked choppy a lot of the night, but also played solid volleyball a lot of the night. They were flat in the first set, losing that, but then picked it up in set 2 and hung in there in set 3, winning both.

    Then came set 4

EWU exploded out to an 11-4 start, and look more than certain to go 5. Then UND began to chip away at the lead. While EWU got a point or two, UND seemed to match it and get a couple of more. All of a sudden its 17-14. Then they rallied to 20-20! EWU however got to set point first at 24-23, then we fought it off. Then they got to set point #2 at 25-24, we fought it off. Then set point 3,4,5,6 we fought it off. Then set point 7 at 30-29, we fought it off. At set point 8, we fought it off! Finally it was 31-31 and the girls had enough. A kill and an ace later set a well attended Betty into a frenzy and clinced a weekend sweep.

    Total attendance was 791

Fighting off eight set points in a row is incredible. What are the odds of that?

Was curious about who leads the Big Sky in volleyball attendance: looks like it is Montana State with 995 a match. Northern Colorado is right about our level with a 727 average. Idaho State is at 682. PSU and NAU are both under 500.

Would be nice to average over 1000, but that would likely take a 20 win season.

  2. Best game of year in many categories. Lots of blocks, clean kills, good serving (did we have unforced?), and damn did we have a lot of digs. Huge win to show we can knock of first/second place team. UNC swept Eastern tonight, so lets do the same on Saturday and I believe we clinch playoff birth.

Biggest win of the season! First win over an upper tier team (NAU, PSU, and ISU).

Hopefully the team can continue to play at a higher level.

Looks like the conference tournament will now be in Pocatello, as ISU now has a one game lead. Although ISU plays at PSU in the last game of the season. Portland would be better for UND: less travel hassles, less home fans, and lower elevation.

  3. As you probably noticed from the first sentence of my post, I acknowledged that statistics don't tell the whole story. But clearly the won-loss record and the statistics are somewhat at odds with each other. The offense is probably better than the statistics suggest, particularly due to the terrible performances in the EWU and MSU games, not to mention the fact that Portland St. was a non-conference game. As for the defense, there's not a lot of mitigating circumstances there. The defense is what the numbers say it is.

We're on the same page. Rather have the W/L record exceed the stats than the other way around.

  4. You accused the conference of not respecting UND because the score wasn't on the scoreboard. The accusation was absurd. It didn't take much to realize that they only post 4 scores at a time, and there are 13 football teams in the conference, so not everyone is going to fit on the scoreboard at 1 time. Plus, if you paid attention to the website, they put up scores for all sports and not just football. I found your statement offensive to the conference.

    Just give it a rest.

The Green Team has wonderful insightful posts, and his statement was not a personal attack on anyone. You were the one that started a personal attack.

Why do people here attack non- trolls? Trolls deserve attacks, not ?loyal posters.

  5. Statistics rarely tell the whole story, but in UND's case, it's pretty bizarre that it has a 3-4 Big Sky record despite being:

    10th in scoring offense;

    11th in total offense;

    12th in scoring defense;

    12th in total defense; and

    10th in turnover margin.

(all of the above are conference-only stats).

About the only key statistic that UND ranks highly in is penalties, as it has the fewest in the conference.

Hope you realize that UND's offense has not played the four worst defenses in the conference.

ISU, UCD, and UNC all have horrible defenses statistically. The statistics aren't true round robin, so they aren't fully comparable. Let UND' offense tee off against ISU, and watch what happens.

UND had two blow out games where the team seemed to give up. Those games demoralized fans and made UND offensive stats horrible. Even with those two blowouts, if UND had won against SDSU and NAU, playoffs would have been possible.

By statistics, the Baltimore Orioles should have lost 25 more games than they did (scored fewer runs than they allowed), but the stats didn't mean crap.

The most amazing stat to me is that UND's D only had one in the top 100 in tackles: Baylee Carr. No LB listed.

The stats also show UND's defense is also actually pretty decent in the Red Zone. It's atrocious outside the red zone.

There's no doubt this team has some glaring weaknesses, but it is also more opportunistic than given credit for.

  6. Thought there might be a thread on this:

So Penn State's Pres, VP, and AD knew about the Sandusky allegations since 1998. In 2001 after the shower sodomy incident, this group of "leaders" call their general counsel about what legal direction they should take, and decided to do nothing but hide the event. Too worried about the effect on Penn St, Paterno, and Sandusky, but didn't give a !@#$ about the kids. Thirteen years of this crap. Even had hidden files that they weren't delivered to the Grand Jury until all of them were fired.

    http://sports.yahoo....ky01191010.html

The grand jury appeared stunned by the differing ways that Schultz, Curley and Spanier dealt with the 1998 and 2001 allegations. In the first case, the boy and his father went directly to the police, meaning Penn State officials could only monitor developments. And monitor they did. Schultz, who oversaw the university police department, was in nearly constant contact with his police chief, Tom Harmon, over the situation and the two had extensive discussions about Sandusky even though the case was being handled by local, non-university police. They met within 36 hours of the initial charge and over the course of a month, Schultz took extensive notes, discussing the likelihood of genital contact between Sandusky and the boy and wondering in print, "is this opening of Pandora's box? Other children?"

Schultz kept Curley and Spanier updated throughout in a constant flurry of emails. It was common for Spanier to be informed of high-profile crimes that might reach media attention, according to staff testimony. While one email from Curley said he spoke to "the coach" there is no certainty that he meant Paterno since many emails often used purposefully vague terms. In 1998, however, Sandusky was still employed as defensive coordinator. It's difficult to imagine Paterno wasn't told.

  7. The Twolves are arguably the most diverse team in the league: two Hispanics and two foreign Slavs. Foreign players have long been discrimated by the NBA, as they were traditionally viewed as soft. The problem is that all the non-American are white, so they don't count as "diverse" in the detractors eyes, even though arguably they bring more diversity than a pool of black and white Americans. Too many people, including these civil "rights" advocates are so superficial - only looling at skin color - that even their own prejudices are nakedly apparent.

  8. Isn't the US supposed to be a post-racial country? Guess it doesn't matter that Minnesota has players from Montenegro, Puerto Rico, Russia, Spain as well as a player named Love that was an Olympian.

Ron Edwards, a longtime Minneapolis civil rights advocate, said he remembers a day last winter when he was watching the Wolves and the only black player on the floor was Wes Johnson, a situation he calls "somewhat disturbing." His sentiments grew stronger, he said, as he watched the team's roster grow even more white this offseason. ...

Terrell calls it "scary" that the Wolves would assemble a roster almost 70 percent white in a sport so dominated by blacks. For Edwards, the numbers trouble him by the "historical view," what he calls a "nullification of diversity and a reversal of history."

    http://www.startribune.com/sports/wolves/176071391.html?page=all&prepage=1&c=y&refer=y

    http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/dish/201210/are-minnesota-timberwolves-too-white

At least the players don't see it as a big deal:

"Honestly, I couldn't tell you I've had more than two or three white guys on a team before," Cunningham said. "It just happened to get dealt this way. There's just as many athletic white guys on this team as there are black guys who are athletic. It's no big deal. We're here to play ball, so regardless of whether we're white or black or yellow or purple, we're going to go out and play."
  9. What those 4 teams have in common is that they are all picked to be in the top half of their conferences (SDSU 1st Summit, NDSU 2nd Summit, UNI 3rd MVC, Hawaii 4th Big West) and they will be on the road. Definitely a great way to find out if we have gotten over our road woes. If they played up to their talent and expectations, then yes I do agree that we can get 4 wins. I would love nothing more than to go down to Frost and the Fargodome and get a W over the XDSU's

First thing is first, I would love to see how they come out against KSU. I want to see if they can actually give a big boy a run for its money. I like our chances of that better now that its not Frank Martin who is there anymore, but has been replaced by an overrated coach in Bruce Weber.

If fans think four wins is at all in the cards in those five road games, we are setting ourselves up for a major disappointment. Road games are always tough to come by.

Kansas St - <5% chance of a win

    N Iowa - <10% chance of a win

    Hawaii - <15 % chance of a win

    SDSU - 25 % chance

    NDSU - 40% chance

If any of the games were at UND, add 25% to each.

Through those five games, a 1-4 road record would actually be reasonable. If this team finishes 3rd in the Big Sky, that would be tremendous progress considering how much more difficult this year will be. This team has never competed in a real conference yet, so the mental toughness and road travels will be a learning experience. The senior year of Webb, Anderson, Brekke, Huff, Schuler etc, we should have higher hopes.

  10. The Cal Poly win was huge for the Hornets. Many of their fans had given up on them after being blasted by UND at home. Now Sac St arguably can get in with a 7-4 record (1-1 vs FBS and no sub-FCS games).

    Thu, Aug 30 at New Mexico State L 19-49 -- Sat, Sep 8 at Colorado W 30-28 -- Sat, Sep 15 Northern Colorado W 28-17 -- Sat, Sep 22 North Dakota L 13-35 -- Sat, Sep 29 at Idaho State W 54-31 -- Sat, Oct 6 at Southern Utah W 27-22 -- Sat, Oct 13 Weber State W 19-14 -- Sat, Oct 20 at Eastern Washington L 28-31 -- Sat, Oct 27 Cal Poly W 35-29 -- Sat, Nov 3 Montana State 7:05 pm -- Sat, Nov 17 at UC Davis TBA --

  11. Beef up both lines, they just aren't strong enough. LB's need to get bigger on the outside and quicker on the inside and also just plain better. We also need a JUCO or two in the secondary at least if not an LB and DL too.

    Amen.

It would have been great for UND to have an open date earlier, like Montana St, Montana, E Wash, etc. Having an open date after S Utah will be much less meaningful than an October date that most other BSC teams have had.

  12. Ag

I think it's been said but threads like this do nothing to help recruiting. This is the first place recruits and their parents will find. Can't remember too many football staffs that have been fired or hired based on chat room experts.

    agree.

And when has Faison ever shown the ability to hire footballl staff. His record at NMSU in that department was horrific. Trust Faison for basketball and volleyball, but not hockey or football.

  13. Very disappointed but can't say the result is all that surprising.

As someone else said, UND just doesn't play well on the road in cooler conditions. The two road results with decent games were in San Diego and Sacramento.

Would rate the top of the BSC in this order:

    Cal Poly

    Montana St

    EWU

    NAU

The Alerus seems to give UND a 14 pt advantage, but cold road locations UND subtract 14 from its effort.

Still say Hendrickson was the LB that had the craziness to keep this defense together last year, both on the field and off. He definitely wasn't soft. Need that kind of mentality for next year.

  14. Is that why ice level is below ground?

I deleted that later. Many arena dig down much lower than the Ralph. The Ralph also had permitting issues until there was English Coulee flood protection in place. The Ralph also isn't designed as a community shelter. My point was that if it wasn't built in a flood prone arena, it's construction would have been cheaper.

  15. Hey, I am an accountant by day. I graduated from UND in Dec 2009 with an accounting degree, and live in Denver now. In terms of following the teams, it's not as hard as it seems... now that I have been blogging on the conference for a year, I know most everyone associated with the conference (coaches, reporters, fans, etc) so a lot of the news gets sent to me, or I can find it quickly. Looking through all the teams' message boards to see if there is any news takes 5-10 mins, so it's not too hard to stay plugged in that way.

It helps with writing the articles too, most articles I can write quickly because I already know about the players/teams. I live about an hour from Greeley, so I can see a lot of the teams in person too, which helps. Beyond that, I just try to make the most of my time... wake up early and write, lunch breaks, when I get a free hour in the evening. If I am busy at work I write less, if I am not as busy, I have more time, easy as that. It is a hobby I really enjoy so I just make time for it.

The biggest key of all... an understanding wife!!

It's clear that when you love something, the product comes out wonderfully.

Bet some of the posters here spend far more time on this board than twins15 does on his blog.

  16. That's good information, explains a lot about about the way it is designed, I'd take the stairs over the flood threat every day of the week.

The Alerus is intended to double as a community shelter in the event of a community disaster. It's been used as such when Canadians were stuck in Grand Forks without housing during a World Juniors blizzard. People forget about that whole concept. For Fargo to flight floods, the FargoDome was the focus of that effort and without it Fargo's battles would have been much more difficult.

People complain all the time about the bottom line of the Alerus, but if they ever needed it for the safety of their lives they would quickly change their tune - at least temporarily.

Most larger arenas and stadiums are dug down to save construction and steel costs as well as create a more stable foundation.

  17. Myabe the Vikings game had something to do with attendance. But, since UND is consistently losing to these teams in the top half of the standings, I think excitement for volleyball might be waning. I know I'm dissapointed with the number of losses, especially at home. I'm surprised the girls can't defend their home court better. :/

UND is 6-0 against the teams below us, but 0-7 against those above us.

NAU, PSU, and ISU are clearly the upper tier of the BSC. NAU in particular is young, so making a challenge in future years may be much more difficult than anticipated.

  18. You are not far off here.

Would also add that the Alerus as it exists is not the originally intended design. Originally, the level of the playing field was lower than ground level, so escalators and stairs were not required to reach the main concourse level.

After the flood, the entire Alerus Arena area design was raised up, so that flooding of any kind could not inundate the playing level, lockers, lower seats etc (see the FargoDome). This redesign added considerable cost and greatly increased the cost of any expansion on the south end. At that time, the requirement for FBS was 30,000 or so stadium seats and nobody anticipated it would drop to 15,000 for both stadium size and average attendance.

For watchmaker to come on here with "know it all" crap he spews is disgusting, and nobody here seems to challenge his B.S. At least he could actually get the facts correct.

  19. This is a stupid thread, but then again, look who started it: Watchmaker. He thinks he should be running everything but can't even run his own life.

If the Alerus didn't exist, football attendance would be half of what it is. November games would be lucky to get 3000.

  20. It's pretty amazing the effect a 5th year FBS player who never started has had on this team. I admit I was very excited when we got an FBS transfer but wasn't really that impressed that he was from UNC, an average FBS team. Imagine if we picked up a stud from a mid/upper level BCS school who is stuck behind some players.

North Carolina has had incredible athletes on their recent football teams, but multiple other issues.

Braden had offers from Kansas St, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan St, Rutgers, Missouri, and Colorado. Every single one of those schools except Colorado and arguably Iowa effectively recruited high quality QBs.

For the first three years, Braden backed up T. J. Yates, who started last year for the Texans while Schaub was down. Yates had impressive seasons for the Tar Heels and remains second for the Texans after Schaub.

Butch Davis was forced to resign the fall before Hanson was an academic senior.

UNC started a Sophomore Bryn Renner, instead of Hanson, when Southern Miss's coach moved in. This was Renner's performance last year:

Year Team Attempts Completions Completion % Yards TDs INT

    2009 North Carolina Redshirt

    2010 North Carolina 2 1 50.0% 14 0 0

    2011 North Carolina 308 212 68.8% 2,769 23 12

Back luck just seems to follow Hanson, being stuck behind Yates, than passed over by the new coach in favor of Renner, than a broken leg in his first game at UND.

The Dallas Cowboys have been scouting Hanson at UND.
