It's a lot like black folks and the n-word.

Obviously the resolution doesn't refer to such an agreement; however, I can definitely see a quid pro quo arrangement. People from the Lake Region (like me), non-native (like me) and native alike, have a lot of respect for Skip Longie and if he says there was an agreement I believe him.

The general assembly passed the resolution, the tribal council is scheduled to vote on the issue on Friday. If anything the AP got the story wrong (which I don't think they did for the above reason). I'd assume the story was written by a Herald writer as they have a very similar story on their website.

What the hell does that mean in this context? What on earth didn't the tribe deliver?

Apparently a couple of broken promises on the part of UND following the last vote played a part (see Skip Longie's quote). AP Article If the University had done what it had promised to do (in addition to ending the sale of Siouxper Dogs and HSioux0 for heaven's sake), maybe they wouldn't be in the place they are today.

You're going supply side, I'm going demand side.

I think that the condominium development in downtown Grand Forks is a great idea. Another thought, which I believe has been mentioned by Kupchella, is developing a downtown campus for UND (ala NDSU). This would get young folks downtown for class, possibly to live, and move significant discretionary spending dollars down there are as well. (if there is any value to it) It's too bad this wasn't thought up immediately following the flood with the big federal $$$ coming into town. I'm not overly familiar with the University, but is there a department or program that would 'fit well' downtown?

I should have been more careful in my post as well, as I knew that not the intent of yours.

I am a fan of admissions plus standards such as that used by UND for undergraduates, but to present it the way it is in the Forum is deceiving. I am sure there are dozens, if not hundreds of freshman, who did not have a 2.5 GPA/21 ACT or higher, and who were admitted "after review" under UND's new admission policy. Don't see anything honorable about riding on coattails, but whatever floats your boat. Most folks don't brag about it though.

Not going to work. The Oklahoma Seminoles aren't going to allow it.
-
I think you're wrong on both counts. First off the Seminoles in Oklahoma, you know decendants of the folks who survived the trail of tears, do not like the nickname. Second, even I am offended by the Illini (of which there are zero surviving members), having a white guy pretending he's a chief isn't going to cut muster with the NCAA. Third this is not a first amendment issue, unless you're talking about the freedom to organize. I'm actually happy that Ralph is not around. I'm glad that he was able to pass into death thinking that his Sioux were saved (though I think he would have loved the fight).

Thanks for the insight Jim. And you're right I should have put "IF".

Does anyone know what, if any, actions the REA would take if the University decides to change the name/logo? I did read (Forum Article) that the REA was planning on following UND's lead in this, but that seems quite contrary to the final wishes of Mr. Engelstad. Chris Semrau from yesterday's Forum article/

A couple of thoughts 1. If many Native Americans (or rather the people with too much time on their hands from middle and upper-middle class families) dislike the presence of the sacred feathers in the logo, how happy are they going to be when 4,500 of them are covered in March during the the tourney? As a Catholic, I'd be pretty upset if a team used a crucifix in its logo, but I'd be f%%kin' irate if they covered these depictions with duct tape each time the team made the playoffs or hosted a post season event. 2. Everyone thinks McFeely is an ass, that's his job.

I don't think the Bison will ever play in Grand Forks while the University is still DII. I could, however, see NDSU writing a very big check for games.

e85 Apparently the flexible fuel version of the Ford Taurus has difficulty starting at low temperatures (see upper right hand side of second page).
