  1. The 6-7 kid from Wisconsin who was in a few weekends ago seems to be a done deal, if I remember right he is going to get some limited scolarship $$ right away also, so he should be an LOI guy come this week. The Juco kid from Ohio who was here a few days after the previously mentioned kid is going to take at least one more visit, sounded like to Northern Kentucky, but UND's chances of getting him appear to be better then 50-50. From what I could gather, a Juco big man is what is desired at this point. I have no idea of any specifics, but I will try to get some info out of those who are finding the talent.
  2. Good luck with the weather tommorrow. The St Cloud coach told Zig they may not get games in on any other day then today, wether is supposed to be terrible. You should call Lorny, he was going to them today or tommorow.
  3. It's baseball, anyone can lose to anyone on any given day, that is waht makes it different from other sports. The Detroit Tigers are 3-0 right now, I don't think they won 3 in a row all year last year. Was it a crappy loss? Sure, but it is baseball, and those things happen every year. Crookston beat Southwest St last weekend, and Southwest is ranked #5 in the region, 2 spots ahead of the Sioux.
  4. The NDSU group's idea has good intentions, but there is no way in hell the Nickel should be involved. They shouldn't lower the Nickel to that level. When you lose something, it stays with the winner until won back. That is what should happen to the Nickel, stays with UND until the Bison can win it back, whenever that may be. If it was UND moving up and NDSU had won the last game, I would feel that the same way. We shouldn't screw with the Nickel's tradition.
  5. That is extremely sad. There is a local flavor in it as well because Tom Carcione, the former GF Varmint and a real classy guy, is the assistant coach at USD and will be out of a job.
  6. I would guess that Kane will end up at a JUCO somewhere also. Minnesota thought he was one they could build a program around, a top 100 recruit, but he turned out to be a huge bust. It sounds like the visits last week went extremely well. The late signing period begins on April 12 I believe, expect a new signing right around then. I haven't heard anything new on Koenig. It is the time of year when all the players leaving are officially granted their release, don't know if a lack of word on Koenig can be interpretted as good or bad.
  7. Something about the Nelson kid from Madison that no one realizes is that he really won the Mr. Basketball by default. Wisconsin's best player is Greg Steitsma, a 6-11 kid from Rudolph who was one of the top 20 in the country until he got hurt and missed 2/3 of the year. One of my Dad's former colleagues and good buddies is one of the editors of the Madison Cap Times. He compared Nelson winning the Mr. Basketball to Jeff Boschee getting hurt his SR year and someone else winning it. He also said that Nelson was at best the 3rd best player on his team. Again, he is obviously a good player, but to get him out of that state, which has become a literal basketball hotbed the past 5 years, the award makes him seem like a player that he really isn't. Because of winning Mr Basketball there, Bison fans, I would guess, would expect something more then he will bring.
  8. Bison put together an extremely solid class with Winkelman aboard. Not to take anything away from it, but I thought that they needed to take a juco kid with the last scholly. Next year should be very long for them, even with only a few D1 teams, they'll be small, real slow and unathletic inside, and without any experience on the perimeter.
  9. Winkelman to NDSU? Huh. Last Fri the guy recruiting him told me it was going to be St Cloud. Interesting.
  10. I was at Buffalo Wild Wings Tues night from 7:30-9 and the recruit was there with Rich, RH, and Riley. Although he was wearing a jumpsuit (or something baggy like that), his body looked pretty wirey (sp??). He seemed to be having a pretty good time, lots of laughing and smiling. He is 6-4 or 6-5 and I have found some articles on the net of him winning some slam dunk contests. His team was rated #1 for a good portion of this past year, and according to those recruiting him he can play anywhere on the perimeter. He has put up good rebounding numbers for a guy his size and position the past 2 years. The Sioux seem to have a good shot at him. If he comes aboard for next year, I would guess that Harkins would redshirt no questions asked, and would set up an extremely solid corps of players at the 2 and 3.
  11. If I remember from the press conference correctly, they said this year's non-conference games are 1 year, guarantee $$$ games.
  12. What I find pretty shady about the tuition hike is that the state has set up a regulation that allows tuition to be raised by a maximum of 17%. So the state or whoever sets the tuition hike sets it at 16.5%. Oh, thanks for the generosity in not raising tuition to the maximum allowable %. Now, the big whigs, when asked why such a large hike for the second straight year, can say they could have raised it an extra 1/2%, but didn't. How generous.
  13. Sioux beat defending NCC tourney champ Augie in 3/4 for the second straight year. JJ "Toddler Hands" Scheving picking up another win to improve to 4-0 with an ERA around 1 and a K to BB ratio of around 4:1, on pace to challenge the legend Mike Rerick's K marks. I still think they are a year away, but having USD in what is supposed to be a home series next weekend, they should be sitting pretty at minimum 6-2 in the NCC after 2 weekends as USD is not very solid as usual. The hitters are hitting and pitchers are getting the job done, I'd anticipate some kind of poll appearance this week for them, votes at least.
  14. Agreed. She is supposedly getting serious interest from the WNBA, true or not she is an incredible player who would've put up 20 on any team she played on, UND, NDSU, SDSU, whoever. Players her height with her skill set don't come around very often. She wa a fun player to watch because of her skills.
  15. No "official" word on Winkelman yet, but according to some in the know it seems like all but a done deal to St. Cloud. You cannot fault the kid for that choice, St Cloud is always in the mix and closer to home for him. The JUCO kid in this weekend would be an instant impact guy, would provide great versatility on the perimeter in being able to play all 3 spots. A pretty exciting player, has won slam dunk contests at tournaments, obviously able to get up pretty high, a difference maker. Hopefully he comes aboard, versatility is an extremely valuable thing, not to mention being a real player.
  16. I guess I don't get it. UND plays Crookston, a fellow D2 team, for a few years, and took crap about it every single year, and that is fair. But when 1AA NDSU schedules NAIA Montana Tech, the response is "Look at our schedule as a whole, it is still good". What gives, can dish it out but no one can take it?
  17. This story was on the Star Tribune's website. Never good to see. cutting sports at Mankato Title IX has gotten out of hand, although I have a feeling these cuts are brought on by more then just Title IX.
  18. The good thing for NDSU about playing Montana Tech is that will be Tech's second game, and the Bison will have game film from Tech's first game nearby. They open with Dosch's boys, Jamestown College .
  19. 6-8 kid from Mankato Loyola, they are in the state tourney in 1A.
  20. I haven't heard anything on Brielmaier in a while, and noticed in today's Strib that Lute Olson has given him the option of walking on at Arizona. If that is out there, not sure if UND is even in the picture anymore given that he must have at least a few other mid level D1 offers if Lute will take him on.
  21. Good info UND Fan. If the JC scorer that is visiting this weekend is the same one I was told about, a SF, the staff is extremely high on him. He was amongst the nation's leading scorers, in the top 8 the last time I checked, while playing in the top JUCO conference in the country. That in itself tells me he is an extremely talented player. Winkelman is in the state tourney and opens up on Wed I believe, and channel 9 in GF will hopefully pick up the state tourney like it has for the MN girls and hockey. Winkelman has been lighting up the scoreborad, and in huge fashion as of late, and has been doing it in all different ways, 3s, alley-oop dunks, jumpers, everything. He would seem to be the real deal capable of everything on the offensive end. I would call it a good recruiting class to get one of the 2 talked about along with Harkins.
  22. It is laughable that it is disagreed with that SDSU hasn't been good in football for 40 years. From 1964-2003, they have been above .500 20 times, with 8 of them being by 1 game, and have been to the playoffs a whopping 1 time, that being a one-and-done in '79. If that isn't not good I really don't know what is. Justifying SDSU being good by giving the example of this years game proves nothing. I've said it a million times, close doesn't count for anything and a wins a wins a wins a win. Moral victories are worthless in sports. If your logic carried any weight, the UND men were pretty good this year, losing to SDSU, a regional semifinalist, 3 times in very close games, and no one will claim that. History has spoken and refuted your claims.
  23. I talked to someone recently who said that Carr is very good in football as a QB, in basketball, and in baseball as a pitcher as well, and likes all of them very much. DAC-10 schools would provide him the opportunity to do all 3 or 2/3, so that looked like a good guess as it seems he may want to play more then 1 sport. Also, it had been rumored that Alex Belquist wants the op[portunity to play both football and basketball at NDSU. There is no way he can play basketball there, I watched for awhile last night and I didn't see anything that wouild make me think he could play there, especially now going D1.
  24. How's this then..... God, why doesn't the newspaper that is an hour away give us more coverage? They are conspiring against us, it is obvious because the owner graduated from our rival so he obviously has some hidden agenda. I wish our paper could be more like the Fargo paper, even though the newspaper we are complaining about is an hour away and Fargo is the home of the university they cover so well, we should get that kind of coverage, Even though we haven't been good in football for 40 years, I think next year is our year. We have the talent in place to get it done nest year, despite the fact that our kids have never even heard of the post-season, plus we have a good kicker in the NFL. And in basketball, we could beat some of the teams in the Big Dance right now, I think we could win right now the Mid-Con despite the fact that we enter the D2 postseason highly ranked year after year and then choke it away, often times at home. Our university is so great, who wouldn't want to go there, and our administration is second to none. Our AD's problems are personal, we shouldn't worry about them because he is a great man and they are only charges right now, and our policy is to look the other way anyway. Our facilities are great also, if we could only get a couple of free scoreboards from the local manufacturer they would be some of the best in the country. And our town, how great is it? Main Street is jam packed with things to do. We are so good and will do so well in D1, it is a wonder we have to keep saying it, if we keep reassuring ourselves maybe we will actually believe it and it will come true. What would we do without guests who add so much intellectaully to our board. If you do not have anything good to say, don't say it at all and leave. That should seem more like home for you.
  25. I don't know why Vogel would want to leave, she shouldn't be surprised by SDSU going D1, unless she likes Johnston that much. Until I see some of this reported in print or on TV I don't know how much I can believe, but with Mankato's coach gone Johnston would seem to be high on their list.
