To be fair, with college sports now nothing seems impossible and every day seems like April Fool's Day.

I think at the low major/FCS level, conferences still mostly make sense. There isn't giant TV money incentivizing irrational behavior (USC/UCLA/UW/UO joining B1G).

It is interesting that three of the four schools making the Frozen Four are private schools. They have a lot more leeway in the NIL money and with Michigan being the fourth school it is not surprising that most of the first-round picks are headed to these schools.

What leeway do private schools have that public schools do not? The biggest NIL schools in football are just the schools with the biggest fanbases or those with some wealthy/desperate donors as far as I'm aware.

Normally, after UND is eliminated, I cheer for a team that hasn't won a Natty, or is the furthest removed from their previous Natty.  In this case, that happens to be Michigan (1998).  A little less than ideal to cheer for them, but that definitely is a long drought.  As much as it would be nice for NCHC bragging rights, I don't think I can be happy with Denver getting yet another one.  Yikes.  Maybe since BC and BU have been the #1 and #2 teams all year, having them play for the championship in one final battle for ultimate bragging rights is what's best for 2024.

As for the location, St. Paul is about as about as far removed from any of the remaining schools' campuses.  Michigan will probably bring a contingent, but not sure about the other schools.  Probably will be a rink full (hopefully) of college hockey fans from all bases, with a decidedly upper Midwest flair.  Would have been more fun with Nodak, Minny, and Wisco to create some old school Final Five magic.

At least Minneapolis is a hub airport that no one should have too much trouble getting to on short notice.

Hak isn't given enough credit for changing from friend/dad to head coach after the Judy's debacle.
    Berry could learn from it.

Isn't the "Judy's Debacle" just a typical night in Grand Forks? What was different about this one?

true...but strategically it kills the nchc and bolsters the big10...double banger

They can bury the NCHC with NIL if they want. I don't think they wanna hurt the sport. I think they just wanted their schools to play together. Notre Dame going to the B1G for hockey makes much more sense than UND.

If Big 10 were strategic they would offer und and have 8 schools. On any given year they would probably have 4 or more teams in national tourney easy.

    NCHC would be dead.

    Western and Miami to ccha

The old NCC would probably be formed....UMD, BSU, SCSU, MSU-Mankaota, Augie, Omaha, Denver, and St Thomas? Maybe CC??

    ASU indy? (again)

The two Alaskas floating in the wind still (again)?

Might the B1G prefer to leave UND behind and take over the sport with bona fide power 5 schools? If they want to take over hockey that is.

I'm not drinking the B1G kool-aid, that was more a reaction to Goon's post. There were a lot of people that expected the B1G to take over college hockey as soon as they were formed. They haven't but they have gotten better. And will continue to be good, as will BC, BU, etc. I'm very concerned that NIL (especially) and free agency will make it very hard for UND to keep up. The bigger cities and schools have a far bigger pool to draw money from and NIL hasn't really affected hockey much yet. And I don't see another Ralph Engelstad out there.

Wouldn't UND be a likely beneficiary of NIL since it's maybe the only hockey blueblood school with a large fanbase where hockey is king?

  8. I know you folks are doing a deep dive but hockey is a sport with high variability in results in single games. UND locked horns tonight with another good team so it shouldn't be a surprising that they lost. Pretty even game. It's not like they laid an egg or something.

I suppose when Notre Dame is in it you always pick them to win it all, so yes, this year you have a chance.   :)

Notre Dame is usually the team who helps me get that far!

ASU is completely different than a hypothetical St. Thomas team in the Big East.  I'd gladly strand them on an Island and invite Mankato, Bemidji, and Augie before taking a St. Thomas program that left the Summit League.  They should know that they are never getting an invite if they leave the SL for the MVC, which would be a necessary step that would need to be taken prior to any consideration from the Big East.

This sounds like cutting off your nose to spite your face - assuming the hypothetical St. Thomas is a good fit for the hockey conference.

Might be time for hard, honest discussion:

Mayville State enrollment (fall 2021): 1172

Jamestown HS has a larger enrollment.

JHS probably has about 700-800 students. I believe class sizes are usually under 200.

    The point remains though

    Not FCS but,

    From Football Scoop:

Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley is leaving the program to become the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers, according to a report Wednesday from ESPN.

“He wants to go coach football again in a league that is all about football,” a source close to Hafley told ESPN. “College coaching has become fundraising, NIL and recruiting your own team and transfers. There’s no time to coach football anymore."

I've seen speculation that's why Saban called it a day.

Because they don’t give a !@#$ and just let it rip. They always look for subtle advantages and loopholes. UND is the opposite.

Asking for forgiveness is often better than asking for permission. I have no idea what the rules are though

Wonder how the team responds to this.  Can't remember if it was Klieman or Bohl that left before the season ended?  One of them answered his cell phone at practice and accepted the job if I remember right.  Maybe I dreamt that.

Bohl for sure stuck around. I think Klieman did too.

Brian Kelly was eating dinner on a recruiting visit, stepped out to take a call, came back and kept eating.....then an hour later it broke he took the LSU job..per the kid's dad.
