big 10 hockey, nil, and hiring coaches that don't play to win.

The most successful programs in terms of NCAA titles recently are UM-Duluth (not a B1G school), Denver (not a B1G school) and Quinnipiac (not a B1G school). This year's Frozen Four features one B1G school (Michigan), one NCHC school (Denver) and two Hockey East schools (BU and BC). Four of the schools I mentioned are small, private schools, one is a four-year public university who plays Division II for all their non-hockey sports and one was from the B1G.

Recent success at the national level has primarily been focused on small, private schools. What are they doing to achieve this success? We should look into it.

I don't think it's too much to expect our program to win some regional games and get to the Frozen Four regularly - Apparently on this board that is too high an expectation.  Frustrations were for Hak were that he needed to win to win a Natty - frustrations for Bubs are that he needs to win a regional game.  Sad.

@Walsh Hall is also okay with Bubba's totally unearned and undeserved extention over on the FB forum, so you shouldn't be surprised.

I drove up to GF to watch the scrimmage and get a free donut. The QB’s threw the ball well. Feeney got picked once but receiver might have knocked it down. Otherwise he had a good day. Kaminski missed on a slant pattern but through a TD on another. Romfo had more pressure from DLine but also threw the ball well.  They all threw the ball well in drills. Hentges (transfer from Mary) didn’t get through his reads as fast but also threw well. Our receivers looked good but we didn’t really try many deep throws. My biggest disappointment in the passing game was despite a new OC it doesn’t seem we realize the TE is an eligible receiver.
Zeibart and Seidel were held out. Donovan Hunt is quick and accelerates quickly. We need to hang on to him and get him involved in the offense.
Oline looks big. Couldn’t tell much cuz it was a scrimmage whistles blown early to protect QB’s. Grant Romfo was the workhouse RB during live running game reps. Most plays were inside runs.
Defensive line kept running game bottled up for the most part. Secondary looks much better. Receivers weren’t running free. LB’s looked to be reacting quicker.
FG guys decent distance but must be more consistent. Punting was nothing special.
I’m sure there were some things I missed. Overall I wouldn’t be pessimistic but we have to get a lot better over the summer.

    Thanks for the summary.

Which is why it is baffling that we can be taken to the woodshed by Omaha, a team that has been raided the last few years, and we even took one of their best players.  Having never been swept by them, to losing 4 of 5 under those circumstances suggests one team is outworking the other.  It isn’t just the NCAA tournament, but all the destination games and Frozen Faceoffs as well.  To have all those advantages and recruiting advantages to put up about 3 wins compared to about 14 losses doesn’t equate.

Nope, it's all luck and the single elimination format. (sarcasm) :silly:

The first 3 were definitely greasy goals, but that’s the way it goes in the one and done NCAA tournament.

Denver was out chanced, out shot, and arguable out played in both games and won (2) one goal games due to no bad breaks and a goalie with a 97.2 save percentage.

But we clearly are outclassed and miles behind DU…

    Blah, blah, blah. :silly:

Here's an idea, maybe it's the players and not the coaches. These young players don't get to dictate in the big time, wether it be in college or in the NHL. I have no problem with Hastings saying this is the type of player I want on my team. Nobody is bigger than team.

I agree with you except for the NHL part. I imagine a lot of coaches have lost their jobs because a few millionaire players complained loudly enough.

Replacing Schmaltz, fair. But he was bottom 6. So, I still don't think he would have been happy with bottom 6, which is likely why he left. I'm not arguing we couldn't have used him, by the way. I just don't think he would have accepted his role.

I agree with you. No point in hanging onto someone who doesn't want to be here.

That's one indicator, I gave another.  One that is an actual comparison between the two teams.  I'd love to hang banner #9, but the NCAA is a small sample size.  The Phillies have beaten the Braves in the playoffs the past two years, but you'd be hard pressed to find many people who would say the Phillies are killing the Braves.  As much as people want to think you can time when a team gets hot, there is a degree of luck involved, be it play itself, status of injuries, any number of factors.  Not having Sanderson available in 2022 or Pyke this year wasn't a bad coaching decision, just a reality of the game.  You can talk about "next man up" all you want, but subtracting key players is going to hurt, just the way things are.

The "reality of the game" hasn't stopped Denver from going to 4 Frozen Fours since 2016 and winning two titles with the chance to win a third next week. Meanwhile, our favorite team has one NCAA tournament win during that entire time (vs. an Alphabet Soup school from the AHA). Those are clear trends over 7 seasons (not counting the 2020 Pandemic shortened season). That is "just the way things are" and it cannot be explained away by the usual alibis posted here constantly.

The problem with this team isn't lack of physical talent (you don't win 26 games without talent). The problem is from the neck up, the lack of mental focus after clinching the Penrose at home. That is the biggest task facing this coaching staff for next year. And whether it's fair or not, lack of national success will negatively affect recruiting if it continues.

With how much all these players want NIL money and leverage, he sure would be giving up a lot.  If he stayed and became a free agent he could have his pick of teams, including the hometown Minnesota Wild who don't have a lot of cap room and would love a hometown kid with a rookie contract.

I hope Blake understands that it's entirely his decision and not a decision for the Hurricanes to make. Carolina can't do a thing about it if he tells them he is going back to school for his Junior year. What are they going to do, cut him? They can't, he hasn't signed with them yet. He has leverage over Carolina and he should use it by coming back for a third year of NCAA hockey and becoming a free agent next year.

Maybe you can start a campaign to have have him removed prior to his hiring just to get a jump start on the complaining.  Poor Sicakota has no chance to live up to your standards.

They aren't just my standards, they are the standards of the program as a whole. Berry has told his team basically the same things. But you are one of several people who weren't all that upset about Bubba getting an thoroughly undeserved contract extension, so I am not surprised at this comment at all.

Them having Rizzo from 4 years ago does nothing to your premise that they are killing us in recruiting. They just aren't. They beat us to Pohlkamp likely because of Carle. Bubs is Canadian. He was never going to coach Pohlkamp.

Okay, fair enough. But seeing Denver go to their fourth Frozen Four since 2016 (with two titles during that time) while we haven't been back since is raising the frustration level for me and some others. Those results will sooner or later have an impact on recruiting.

And I say "disasterous" is a mischaracterization of "post-Penrose". We had a team slump at the worst time + goalie illness + a Pyke injury. Disaster? No. Misfortunate? Quite.

I've defined what I'd call disasterous: A disasterous March would've been losing to WMU (1, 2) then UNO (8, 9), then swept by Miami (15, 16), thus missing the Frozen Faceoff and likely falling out of the NCAAs.

Whatever adjective you want to use, the month of March was not good. You can spin it however you want, but the coaching staff needs to figure out why this happens after we clinch the Penrose. The main issue is from the neck up, not a lack of physical talent.

I would not trade Strathmann, Boisvert, and Swanson for Pohlkamp plus 2 current DU recruits.

Now make me the General Manager and Senior VP and Managing Partner of UND Mens Hockey. :)

You sure you want that kind of pressure in your life? :whistling:
