What does Mal have to do to keep her job after this year? Signed through 2025-26 but this feels make or break to me…. Or it should be.

Given the low standards around here, anything 10 wins or above probably gets her a contract extension. :silly:

Dumb move, Francis should be shown the door also.

I don't think he'll get another NHL head coaching job, but Lindy Ruff ended up in Buffalo so who knows.

He's scapegoating to save his own hide.

That only works for so long.

And if Tortorella can keep getting hired, then why not Hakstol?

SEA sets back development plan and goals at least two seasons.

If the Kraken don't improve after the coaching change, then Francis may be on the way out as well. Scapegoating only works for so long.

Not a former player, but a former coach, sounds like Hak is on the way out. Hopefully he finds his next spot quickly.

The NHL is not a friendly place for head coaches.

Except not everyone is talented enough to play college or even the Olympics.

Every single person can contribute to NIL and direct their funds where they want to go.  And I would be willing to bet if you contribute they would answer the questions you have.

NIL is going to be a net negative for FCS as a whole, with FBS programs poaching top FCS talent.

I think it’s more accurate to say “Jerry’s World” (stadium, practice facilities, golf course, post game amenities for players and their families) is flashy. The organization takes very good care of players and their families. There was nothing flashy about a number of there players that were drafted or signed as free agents over the years but the Cowboys and the stadium bring in a lot of fans in a FB crazy state who want to experience “Jerry’s World”.  He is all about winning, but  I believe his ego sometimes gets in the way of team success.

That is the point I was trying to make.

Okay, so we drafted the savior of the franchise!  Thank God!

I may be more excited about Turner, but we officially have drafted our next QB to lead the franchise.  Please....let this one be it.....with no offense to Christian Ponder, Kellen Mond, TarVar, Jaren Hall, Nate Stanley, Teddy B, JD Booty, Tyler Thigpen, Chad May, Gino Torretta, and any other names I'm forgetting who weren't some how a diamond in the rough player with the potential to lead a franchise....

Left Brad Johnson and Daunte off the list because they were okay for periods of time.

If Daunte Culpepper hadn't blown out his knee, I think he would have taken us places.

Listened to his interview on Chiclets and I hate to say it but it's not going to be easy recruiting and playing against this guy for the next how many years. I could definitely see why kids would want to go play for him. Seemed like a really good dude and his age would certainly be appealing to 18-24 year olds.

I think the addition of Dillon Simpson will help us with recruiting.

    If I were Berry's sensei:

    - end being the friend; time to be coach (and task master) first
    - leave the 6/6 mindset; get to 9/3
    - it's OK to win by 3 or more, winning by 1 is harder so make it easier on the team

And finally, grow them in the 'R' months, sort them in the 'Y' months, with focus on crescendo  in the "H and L" months.

I think a perfect blend of Hakstol's discipline and Berry’s father figure approach would be the best of both worlds.

Do we risk having a liability on the ice hoping he will develop, or do we cut our losses on the Wade Murphys and Harrison Blaisdells of the world? Roster management is very different than it was a few years ago, clearing room for proven commodities is part of the game.

So we should focus on the portal more? I think we should focus more on getting the best talent we can and letting them learn on the job. Obviously some of those players won't work out, but if you hit on more than you miss, you'll be in the hunt at the end of the year.

The coaches did a great job last off-season finding portal guys that fit in, but sometimes I think the coaches choose the short-term certainty of 5th and 6th year guys over the long-term potential of talented freshmen and sophomores.

I just don't see the ROI to donating to the collective if you're a business in Grand Forks, ND.

It would have to be looked at as strictly a "donation" (but with no tax benefit since the collective is for-profit) and not an actual investment.

Most people give to a cause because they care about it. If they want to make money off of it, a sponsorship deal would be most appropriate.

UND's collective is going to need a lot of folks to kick in the $25 bucks a month to compete with some of these other schools.

I fear the truth of the matter is that UND does not have a large enough alumni base nor is there a significant enough corporate presence in Grand Forks, North Dakota to enable UND to compete whatsoever in the NIL game.

We have a huge alumni base, many of whom are fiercely loyal to their alma mater. We just need to make them aware of this thing and the importance of it. That means communicating with them better than we have communicated with Champions Club members, based on a few stories I have read on this forum.

We have never had as many alumni as the bigger schools in the NCAA. But we've always punched above our weight class in Division I hockey. I don't think NIL will be as big of a factor in FCS football and mid-major basketball, but even those sports will occasionally need NIL assistance.

I will say this: If we are not willing or able to raise the funds needed to really compete in FCS football and at a mid-major level in basketball, maybe we should move back down to Division 2. And no, I am not being hyperbolic either.

Funny you should mention Monty, he's been the Bruins head coach for two season and has won 112-32-20 (.743) the last two season and some in Bruins nation want him fired if his team is bounced in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Wasn't Gwoz fired for non-performance related reasons? I seem to remember it being a politically related firing.

The last thing I want is a malaise to develop over the hockey program that has developed in some of our other sports where the expectation isn't even there anymore.

This is my concern as well. This is the point I have been trying to make over and over.

What specifically is the problem "from the neck up?"  It's a good catchall phrase, but what exactly are we talking about, other than they haven't been winning in the NCAAs?

What are we talking about? Losing that mental edge after clinching the Penrose Cup. The letdown that happens after an emotional weekend sweeping Western Michigan and celebrating with the hometown fans. It's like the team was emotionally and mentally wiped after that. They went 2-4 after clinching the NCHC regular season title, with both wins against one of worst teams in the short history of the NCHC.

An old adage is that "80% of sports is from the neck up". Some people would say "that's just not true", but I think it is. Talent alone isn't enough.

Or we can just tell Jordan Schmaltz that he doesn't know what he is talking about and pretend that everything is fine.

He didn't win a banner, and that is the only metric some fans apply, but he was one the best program coaches UND has had.

Green banners are what people remember in the long run. Whether or not that is healthy or positive is debatable. What is not debatable is that a program's national reputation and profile is closely linked to winning NCAA titles. When Denver wins 3 titles and we cannot even make the national semifinals during the same time period, that is detrimental to our program.

Bemidji State was thrilled winning the McNaughton Cup. Michigan Tech was thrilled winning the CCHA autobid. UND's ambitions and expectations are and should be much higher.
