  1. Same here. Locally and independently-owned. Good food. Lots of TV screens. Prices were reasonable. Much better than most national chains (although BWW is pretty good).
  2. The name of the place was Players Sports Grill and Bar and yes, the Big Dog Breakfast was awesome.
  3. They are sticking it to their students....again.
  4. "Gummint" isn't supposed to make money. You shouldn't run government like a business and you shouldn't run business like a government. They serve two totally different functions. And libraries are places where everyone can go and have access to books, movies, computers, etc. without having to pay some outrageous admission fee or club membership. How would all the golf enthusiasts on this forum like it if all golf courses were expensive, private clubs and therefore out of the price range of most ordinary people? Having said all that, the idea of having a coffee house or some kind of complimentary business attached to the library is a solid idea and it is something I have not heard anyone mention. It could help defray some of the costs of the library (both construction costs and future on-going maintenance and overhead). Does someone want to write a letter to the Heraldo to float this idea?
  5. We'll need more room to put computers that people are going to want to use. There also are movies that people can check out (educational and entertainment); we'll need room for that. Maybe some private reading and/or meeting rooms people can check out; that would be useful as well. Also, the library hosts children's reading programs and other events. And like I have said before, books are not going to totally go away.
  6. City of Grand Forks Population (1970): 39,008 City of Grand Forks Population (2015): 57,011 Which is (drum roll please) a 50% increase. Which makes the 50% increase in the size of the library reasonable. In closing, that county population figure is always thrown in our faces because it makes it look like people are leaving in droves. The fact is, the streets are as busy as I can remember them.
  7. The city is much bigger than it was back in 1972, the county as a whole has lost people in the more rural areas. And people in the city are more likely to use the library on a regular basis.
  8. Real books will never completely go away, at least not in our lifetimes. And 50% more space is reasonable considering Grand Forks is much larger than it was when the current building was built. And they likely will put in more computers and more technology, which will cost money, but is needed to make the library as useful as possible. You are 100% right about parking and the impracticality of a downtown location. The midtown location is the only one that makes sense for everybody.
  9. If 95% of it ends up being advertising, then I think the businesses that advertise there should have to pay for 95% of the cost of putting it up.
  10. The overall number of people that use it has grown and grown. You can't find parking half the time and when it is busy, it is quite crowded in there. There is a false perception that nobody uses the library anymore; it simply isn't true.
  11. You would be surprised at the number of people that use the library for their internet access. Not everyone has high-speed internet or a smartphone. Go into the G.F. Public Library sometime; the computers are usually packed with people. That is what a new library would focus on; online and electronic resources. And those things are lacking at the current library and would be expensive to put in vs. building a new facility. Even the Harley E. French Health Sciences Library on campus is going to get rid of most of their paper copies and make digital access to journals available 24/7. The future of libraries will look much different from what it was even 10 years ago.
  12. I don't think we can accurately judge how they look or what they add to the game experience until we go to a game with the boards functioning.
  13. Nobody has disputed that and that is what should happen. Polls last time showed people were supportive of a new library, but all the confusion over where it should be built is what clouded the issue and made people reluctant to vote yes. This time, they are actually vetting locations. I think the midtown location near the Grand Cities Mall is the best place (plenty of parking, room to build). The current library site could then be sold to private interests.
  14. The first proposal back in 2011 was sunk by two major things: 1) Uncertainty over location and 2) A horrible marketing campaign (If I EVER hear about "The Hobbit" ever again, I will scream). At least this time, they are doing a thorough study on where to build it. And they are having public meetings where you can give your input or ask questions.
  15. I have often wondered just how many warheads were targeted at Grand Forks Air Force Base by the Soviets during the Cold War. Scary to think I grew up 15 miles east of a prime target for ICBMs.
  16. That definitely was a major twist of fate that told us maybe, just maybe, this time it would be different.
  17. That company is struggling right now. I don't think they will be expanding anytime soon.
  18. I've been soaking in the good vibes since April 9th!
  19. Was there any audible booing from the Gopher cry babies?
  20. Most of the people you listed are well-known right-wingers. Jordan is pretty apolitical, but I think the others are staunch conservatives. Just like Thomas. And how do we know if POTUS does or doesn't watch sports on Air Force 1 or in the White House private residence? I am sure POTUS does that whenever he gets the chance. He hates the bubble he has to live in more than most of us could ever imagine.
  21. This is what was wrong with it. This was supposed to be about the team, not about him getting his jock strap in a bunch over something totally unrelated to the game of hockey or winning the Stanley Cup. And nobody in the media held a gun to his head and told him to say that.
  22. Didn't we do that on April 9th, 2016 in Tampa, FL at around 10:00pm CT?
  23. Oh, I agree with you. Tim Thomas was being a classless tool for refusing to join his teammates at the White House a few years ago.
  24. But it's okay for Boston College to be at home every year for their regional? Yep, that is what I thought.
