Or more simple, chance to coach D1, and make more money and possible head coach aspirations.

Good coaches/assistants will be plucked by other head coaches for bigger opportunities (and pay).

As for the Titanic reference next season will show how accurate your analogy is in my opinion. If anything the last few years seem more like the Bermuda Triangle where it looks like we can tackle in the open, run the ball etc. then it suddenly disappears in a game or a half.

Ideally he (Eric) will be in the running for head coach if and when Bubba leaves because of the FBS experience and a chance to use UND as a resume builder.

I hope Eric Schmidt is the running, among others. He will be a Mountain West coordinator next season. NDSU just hired a Mountain West coordinator with close program ties to be their next head coach. Ultimately, UND needs to up the ante with their coaching salaries no matter what. Have to take the most popular sport in America more seriously or be left behind.

That can't possibly be Schmidt  He coached at UND and as we all know, was an insider and certainly knows nothing about coaching especially above the D2 level.  Those that believe this is him should get on the Huskie forum ASAP to save their program

He was smart enough to leave the Bubba squad.

Flee the titanic while there are still lifeboats, if you will.

    Not good for us

Bubba won’t have the boys ready for the FBS game. Take the money and lay down, as per usual.

The film I've seen of Deng Deng shows he has a long loping stride, not short-choppy steps like Belquist. Is he going to get open with that stride?

Last "lopers" I recall are Toivanen and Maag. It worked for them I guess.

My novice guess Deng Deng is more of a deep threat or simpler route runner. Unless he can develop better footwork and learn how to get separation from d-backs.

True freshman receiver, will take time to learn the game (plays, route running, connection with ? QB, etc.), but at that position, can get on the field early with his athleticism. Will he fun to see how he develops with “new” strength and conditioning program.

I doubt that they are ok with status quo.  More likely scenario is that they can't snag the players that would make a difference there.

Correct. I think the staff has the right idea in mind, as far as what they need to recruit, but they just can’t actuate it. The debate is whether it’s due to a deficiency of resources or intrinsic inability. My guess, it’s likely a combination of both.

Add Jonathan Toews. Michael Jordan was famously shown wearing his jersey. I doubt any athletes from other sports have ever worn a Carson Wentz jersey or any of the other practice squad players from NDSU. Hockey is also much bigger internationally than football, so hockey players are known not only in Canada and the US, but Russia, Sweden, and other European countries.

Delusional ^ (ignores statistics; proceeds w/ subjective rationalization)

Football > hockey. Deal with it.

Problem is you post about this stuff in the wrong threads.  Creeps into every discussion.  There's nothing wrong with this post other than its in a thread titled "2024 Recruiting".  See the problem and why people may have an issue with you?  If you think discussion about 2024 is pointless that doesn't give you the right to ruin the thread for others.

I agree. Just needed to finish my responses. The distractions and arguments are largely a byproduct of what UND athletic leadership and football has done to itself. We all want to see UND football win, but yet, here we are. Don’t worry; I’m done posting in this thread unless it’s strictly about recruiting.

You always start with the false narrative that "football is more popular than hockey". FBS football in the P5 conferences ONLY may be more popular than hockey, but FCS football is not anywhere close to being more popular than D1 hockey. UND is in the black in one sport and that is hockey. UND makes more from hockey than NDSU makes from football, and NDSU has dominated FCS football for over a decade. Keep telling yourself otherwise.

Football is more popular than hockey. FCS football is definitely similar in popularity to the entirety of collegiate hockey. Period. FCS football is still football. Doesn’t matter if pee wee, high school, college or pros. It is what it is. Profits are going to be hard to come by with collegiate athletics anywhere in North Dakota - not enough people. Hard to argue with delusionists. Can spin it anyway you want to fit your narrative. I’ll stick with the realists.

I am so tired of same people or should I say same posters demanding a coaching change on this site. The fact is as it stands now the Administration and majority of people are not in line for changing of the coaching staff. Yes, we all want us to do better but I think majority of you wanting this change have underlining reasons for change and i think it's how this coaching staff process goes about improving this program. I still think large number people think all we have to do change coaches and were going to win it all surpass NDSU to the South. The fact is they have huge advantage over UND in football in that Fargo supports this program with more money than we do because it's their school number one sport. We have football but it's not our number one sport and that is Hockey and look at our budget for hockey program at one time NDSU wanted to be with UND on hockey and gave up on that went full out to football. This plays into our football program we have less resources and after Fargo's forum communication took over Herald and closed down our local tv station media is controlled by Fargo and very little exposure goes out on UND football to greater region. This plays into our recruiting it takes time and building relationships high school coaches and getting presence to get kids because there is very little media heard about UND football. Then you add in our location how not only NDSU uses that against us but also other Dakota schools telling potential recruits how winters and cold last forever and we had year like last year it just reinforces what they are saying. I look at SDSU they took years to get to where they are at, and they stayed with their coach to finally build the program up to what they have now.  The conferences we have played in by far best conferences in FCS and if don't win one top conference spot gives you probably one tougher opening games of playoffs and usually opponent from Big Sky and similar team to you. These last two years have shown our defenses have not been up to playoff caliber and needs to be fixed and has been said by our coaching staff. We all talk we just need to go to the portal and get players we need but I don't think anyone of us here has any idea what it takes to get the type of player we need. From what i have been reading it takes NIL money, Media attention, right fit academically, and then place the recruit wants to come too.  This gets me to instead of some people spending great deal of blowing on changing coaching staffs maybe should be looking how they can help give these coaches put more things in their bag of recruitment resources to get players we need and also retain players we need to step from 15 to 9 team in FCS to top 3 or 4. This is how I feel quit wasting this site on something is going nowhere for the present and do something to advance this program to compete with the teams above us no matter who is leading this team.

Fargo’s investment in football has paid off and will continue to pay off. UND’s uninspired maintenance of the status quo is not working, relatively speaking. Football is more popular than hockey. Hockey does allow for some differentiation for UND and Grand Forks, but it’s most certainly not enough by itself. Fargo has a monopoly on communications like you said, with Grand Forks having no voice. It will be hard for UND to bounce back unless they look to be aggressive in areas where Fargo holds an advantage (from a collegiate athletics standpoint, that’s football and basketball for starters). Maintaining just hockey is going to leave GF/UND at the status quo, which means Fargo (including NDSU athletics) ascending at a rate well beyond that of Grand Forks and UND athletics. But, well, there’s always hockey …

The culture of constantly criticizing those with big ideas and novel plans is a dangerous one, and it typically always leaves those in that culture well behind in the end. Example: see division I approach back in early 2000s

As for coaching staff and 2024 recruiting, more resources would certainly be nice. In essence, my point is that there does need to be more resources for UND football to grow, so I agree with you on that. But transitioning to different coaches is just the reality of change and progression in college athletics. UND will need to do this, sooner rather than later, to take the next step. Sorry if that hurts some of your feelings due to personal relationships.

I digress. On to 2024 recruiting. 2024 very likely is going to be a rough season. Hope I’m wrong.

I wish the voices would give it a rest so we could spend time talking about recruiting and/or 2024 season rather than how the staff should be fired.

With firings (and subsequent hires) then maybe recruiting and/or future seasons would be worth talking about.

In the recruiting thread there was talk about where the team is at and playoffs 4 of last 5 years etc.

    My take is

Where we were before Bubba and where we are now is has been an improvement. As stated offense is better but needs to be more consistent and defense was decent to good has dropped especially the last two years.

The team and especially the staff (very much most of us on this forum) that beating NDSU and making the playoffs is no longer good enough. Need to make deep playoff runs and a title. Next years schedule is tougher but we get a few more pieces on D and have effective schemes we could go from 6 wins to 8-10.

If we don’t get the latter I would think there will be more coaching changes next year.

At some point, we need a clean slate. Preferably sooner rather than later. New culture. New ideas. You either change the culture or the culture changes you. The past ten seasons have been okay, but could’ve been so much better. Bring in some outside influence and get this thing rolling.

Sounds like we all are content how we have performed these last ten years

    A little surprising

Difference between good and great. Look just to the south. NDSU - and now also SDSU - desire greatness at this level of football. UND (including its fans, supporters, and administration) is content with good. Expectations matter.

Amazing they are one of the few teams that have made the playoffs 4 of the last 5 years.

All that matters. Shut ‘er down when you get there. Staff don’t like the spotlight. Bad attribute to have …

A good coach can see the potential and make them productive players.

Correct. They also have a track record of doing it so others want to join that coach. Recruiting is important, and good coaches are good at this, partly because their track record speaks for itself.

Are we at that point? Of course not. After 10 years, our current staff is seen from the outside as average at best, and unable to get out of their own way when opportunity presents itself to take the next step.

One step forward (beat NDSU), one step back (shut out the next week). One step forward (make playoffs), one step back (lose at home after uproar about not hosting home playoff game the previous season).   One step forward (seeded playoff team in 2016), one step back (lose at home right away in 2016 when seeded, follow it up in 2017 with losing season). One step forward (MVFC champs in pandemic year), one step back (losing season in 2021, the next season).

So many examples of why this staff epitomizes mediocrity.

Back to your original point; a good coach can identify potential and enhance it. That is also what good teachers do. The football “teachers” at UND aren’t finding and developing enough diamonds in the rough. Consistency is lacking.

For some reason we are offering average division 3 players with no D1 offers to try to improve our defense. Coaches getting worried they can’t get anyone? Recruiting is already bad enough because they only recruit the same 5 states. On top of this we need top level fcs with some fbs talent to make up for Joel’s inexperience and lack of football and coaching knowledge. Unfortunately, as long as he is the coordinator the defense will always struggle.

There will likely be *changes* after 2024..

I think we’re in for a rough year in 2024, since it was inexplicably felt that extending an average coach after a losing season (2021) would somehow work out …

You keep holding on to that as that's the only thing you got.  How'd that work out in the playoffs and recruiting?

NDSU at the same place as UND right now … not in the playoffs/championship game.

    Recruiting TBD

Facts are facts … but they can be tough to fathom if you’re an NDSU associate …

UND was #1 last year in kickoff return yards. You are a clown if you think we need a special teams coach……. We all know who we are talking about……..

Doesn’t matter what we want at this point. Coaching staff is staying together for 2024.

Fork in the road coming up though - does the team get better or worse? I see the latter with subsequent changes thereafter, but we’ll see.
