For those keeping track (probably missing some):

    Danny to SDSU

    Robbie Rouse to SDSU

    Steve Crutchley to NDSU

Malcom Agnew to Sac St (now Stanford)

Chaves needs to find some $ so UND can start poaching our rivals' and conference opponents' coaches back...

When you fund the most popular sport in America as a second-rate sport this is what you get … pathetic. Increase the salary pool … ASAP. And hire a better head coach please.

Danny isn’t an idiot he probably saw the ship coming down and he’s going to ride the hot ticket out of town

Correct. Danny is no idiot. 2024 is a lame duck year. ship is sinking. 2013 coaching hire was poor, and extension in 2021 was especially poor. This is just plain bad to be honest. But, well, hockey … Ha! What a joke…

Old fashioned way for FCS will absolutely still work if you can retain & develop.

Point is, you can’t really retain that well now. South Dakota State has done pretty good, though, and they’ve seen results because of it.  So, I guess, it’s just relative; top FCS programs just have to retain better than everyone else.

    Nope

You proclaim quite often that the coaches recruit lesser talent and they do not develop players.

Kitty , Wright and Tommy were developed well and moved on to a higher level.

    Give credit where it’s due.

So, they developed talent but still can’t win playoff games? Doesn’t change the big picture. Nice try though.

I think you meant to say because no alums have stepped up the way Ralph Englestad did.

That’s one way to look at it. But only one single way and many exist.

That's what every program is. That's college football now. Just a money pit.

All the FCS programs … other than South Dakota State 2x National Champs. Relationship there for sure …

No doubt they will eventually get hit by the transfer portal like every other FCS program …

Yep. Will be one the reasons this staff will be gone after next season.

2024 is a lame duck year. This feels a bit like 2012/2013 all over again.

What these last two seasons have taught me is this coaching staff absolutely cannot recruit the portal at all. Too much competition. Going to have to do it the old fashioned way.

Old fashioned way in this new modern age of college football is quite dangerous … and likely futile. Just get new coaches with a new approach. Until then, rinse and repeat.

I just read an article that pretty much supports this. Their point? The news media controls college sports…not the commissioners or AD. ESPN can allow you to have a date and location of the game. This time will be determined? a week before. But if you are one of the key games, you fall into the ?5 day rule. You find out like Sunday or Monday when the game is based on who won or lost.

The editorial (?CNN, not sure) went on to say college football as we know it, will die after Monday night’s game.

Yes, NIL is important and who is starting it?

Another reason why UND/ Grand Forks not having a local communications voice now hurts. Everything moving to Fargo from a media perspective has significantly hurt UND and Grand Forks …

Changing the subject from how poor we are as team by people on this forum to something I think is more relevant is what progress has UND done on NIL group together support athletics. I know we have been working on the Alston awards, but it appears we need to be looking at Group that will put together organization to fund NIL money or benefits to athletes if we are compete at the division I level. I know this is going to be difficult thing to pull off, but I really believe we might as well start working on this. Personally, I think this is going to lead to end of the college sports as we know it especially for Mid-majors there just is not enough money at this level, I believe to compete with the large university that have access to big TV money and donor support. I think were heading for area where corruption enters college sports especially with legalized betting that is being done on college sports. But getting back to NIL money even small amounts would be helpful to retaining players or to get even more recruits coming here to play sports. I think area with most potential would be adding additional players by paying their tuition in effect increasing our scholarships and taking chances on developing players. If were going to be farm system for FBS we might as well build your team up with number players that could play several years for you before they move on or should I say being called up. FCS maybe should be lobby for every one that transfer up to FBS school needs to refund or pay them for developing their player especially with all money coming from tv rights. We could call this sharing of the wealth.

A bit negative I’d still say but still a worthwhile thought. It will change and mid-majors will be less relevant, but it won’t end mid-majors. Collegiate athletics - especially college football - is getting to be bigger $ by the second. This means it will be harder for UND to have relevant football program on the national stage while trying to fund the program second-rate (due to the existence of hockey as first rate). There was always talk that UND hockey funding hurt UND football in the past, and it was controversial, but this is becoming a bigger deal day by day. There’s only a finite number of resources. Collegiate football is becoming less and less about development and more and more about what can you do for me right now. In essence, that means student-athlete payments through NIL, as well as facilities and winning right now. It’s why some push for coaching change now, it’s why getting the new facilities is a big deal, and it’s why winning championships is a big deal, although even the top programs (NDSU, SDSU, Montana) suffer loses to FBS . But, again, with UND putting all the chips in for hockey, it will get harder not easier for football, unless the philosophy changes. But there’s a lot of ice heads around Grand Forks and UND …

Really.  How many FG or Punts blocked by opponents vs how many FG or punts blocked by UND.  Statistics can be a bitch if you don't research the results.  Just maybe just the most negative person on the forum.

    Did you watch anything?

Got better towards end of season. Still FG kicking ain’t anywhere close to where it should be.

Money is always the issue…wars are fought about moral issues but there is always a money reason behind it.

Revolutionary War: freedom but increased taxes to England

Civil War: slavery but cotton tax increase behind it

one QB said he was offered $3M for NIL but would not name the school….

Are you aware of the 2013 UND football coaching search?

Special teams were a strength in 2023. The offense needs to be better against better teams. But that defense needs a complete overhaul.

Field goal unit … yeah, plenty to improve for special teams yet.

At least you're finally admitting no one is saying it out loud, it's just the voices in your head telling you it's happening....

I’m afraid you’re actually the one with the auditory hallucinations given how often you bring up voices in heads on here …

It’s okay, I can sympathize; trying to constantly justify the current direction of UND football/athletics would be very debilitating.

I didn’t miss the point. If you want  good, legit coach, you have to pay him. I know he’s already an FBS coach. Yes, who knows where a coach ends up on his way up. UND really missed the boat hiring Bubba, when they could’ve gone a different direction. It’s foresight and money.

Money wasn’t the issue in 2013 at all, just an unfortunately poor decision. Money still isn’t the only issue now, but it does help. There’s more money at UND for football, but the culture and historical trends continue to get in the way of that.

And I keep seeing you say there's a bunch of people ok with it, yet not a single person actually has said that...

wrong. It’s implied over and over again.

i think i've asked but how does sdac pay more for coaches with their one stop light town in the middle of nowhereville than our flagship U?

Cause our flagship U thinks - for some incredibly stupid reason - that football is second-tier …

There’s resources at UND for football coaches, but the department is mismanaged due to cultural issues (hockey, hockey, hockey) and historical trends. Rate of change is quite slow in the Dakotas, especially in Grand Forks.

Polasek did take a small base pay cut to move from OL coach at Iowa to OC at Wyoming, but a 13% haircut to get OC in the FBS on your resume is likely worth it, particularly with a head coach you know and expectations that aren't sky high. What he was making at Wyoming is in line with what he is likely getting at NDSU.

Schmidt made significantly coaching ST and Edge rushers than Polasek did as a OC for Wyoming. Like 65% more.
Will be interesting to see what his salary as new DC of SDSU is announced at. Sean Lewis was given a $3.7 million salary pool for his 10 assistants. Safe to say he's needed to keep Schmidt in the same ballpark on compensation to get him to leave UW, which is significantly more than anyone in the FCS is getting as a head coach.

Glad you over-thought that one. UND underpays is the bottomline.

Maybe Schmidt taking a cut to get FBS coordinator on his resume also? San Diego State budget likely not much larger than Wyoming’s, but someone else can look that up.

okay, I looked it up. San Diego State with greater football budget than Wyoming.

ultimately pointless in terms of UND underpaying football coaches ..

  20. Some of you folks wouldn’t be upset if UND won 7 games every season for the rest of eternity, because it’s “better than where we were”, so there’s that …
