10 years into being a HC and now Bubba is going to have some fire? Hard to think too much will change, but since he is going to be here at least another year hopefully something does. Am looking forward to a potentially much better deep ball passing game next year and having a QB where we can call 5-6 designed runs a game next year and him actually be a threat on the ground.

nepotistic hire and here we are. Need to do better from the top (athletic director and hiring process) down. Wake me up when we have new competent leadership. Until then, I’ll be present, but sleep walking. UND football at present is so content with slightly above average.

need major overhaul … otherwise I again suspect a lack of control at the line of scrimmage in 2024

Lots of OL studs waiting in the wings too. That group is the strongest group going into next season and long term.

That’s a a positive. Next most important position is defensive line/edge, and that is where there is much to be desired.

Need to do better at the line of scrimmage, specifically on defense.

NDSu appears heading down this road and trying to move up to FBS and they may have enough community resources to make this happen but can they maintain this over long period of time. Already they are seeing declining enrollments and budget problems on academic side of the school.

They can’t go FBS in light of recent activity. NDSU and their intentions aren’t as innocent as the Fargo-backers would like everyone to think …

Pretty quiet out there. What are we thinking the strategy is? Trying to get targets on campus this weekend and offering at that time? Start offers early next week and try to get them on campus next weekend? 20th is coming soon and there are some major needs that need to be filled via the portal.

get better players and try to coach them / motivate them better

Yada, yada, yada, repeat, repeat, repeat, etc., etc., etc., blah, blah, blah, wash, rinse, repeat.  Good grief.

It’s been repeated ad nauseam because it’s the elephant in the room.

    Ignore important issues much?

    Good grief.

Talent wise is was clear we weren’t fast enough on the edge. Imagine those third and longs with Turner coming off the edge instead of what we had this year. That’s probably a 2 game swing right there and we’re still playing.

Talent is not only issue. The team I saw on Oct. 14 would still be playing in the playoffs also. But they couldn’t capture lightning in a bottle, due to piss poor coaching and leadership, once again.

Just wait til he’s coaching a top tier SEC team.

You’d think we would have learned talent is better than loyalty and familiarity by now with DeBoer being prime example #1.

Yet here we are, at UND with a different AD, still extending coaches after losing seasons, still awarding loyalty/familiarity when clearly there are more talented coaches out there …

    Coaching staff isn’t going anywhere

Program also isn’t going anywhere different until there’s change with staff …

Common sense … but we keep “hoping” blindly

FBS team and 4 of the 8 final teams this season. Isn't going to be a cakewalk by any means.

Never is, especially with the current coaching staff …

But, by August 2024, we’ll all forget and be back ready for more bubba ball … ignorance is bliss, as they say, and time heals (most) wounds

Rumor has it that Bubba addressed the team last week with more fire than anything seen in the past.  Maybe the message is finally resonating that the “Mr. Roger’s” approach to firing up the team is not really working.  Also hearing that our younger quarterbacks are making real efforts to take on leadership roles.  While it can be hard to expect significant changes based on history, I remain hopeful that we will see moves forward again next year.  This team can be frustrating, but I’m hoping for improvement and will be right back tailgating and in my seats next year.  I am, however,  hoping we see real changes on defense and get some of the old Sioux linebacker and secondary hitting back into the system.  Our coverage schemes on third down clearly have to be scrapped as well.  We have a whole year to work on that….

Or the even more dreaded... 3rd & 20+

Bubba pisses himself anytime it’s 3 & 10+ … it’s only a favorable defensive down/distance for every other program in the country …

I would say they got some nice value from Otis, though. He was pretty damn good for that short while

All the more reason to go out and recruit the whole damn country. No restrictions. Get good football players.

now, of course this is a bit extreme, but und should be more extreme than what they have been.

In my mind it's as simple as this:

Mediocre defense/Inconsistent offense - 5-7 wins (bubble team at best depending on schedule)

Average defense/Average Offense - 6-8 wins (playoff bubble most years)

Good defense/Average offense - 7-9 wins (normally in the playoffs/seed contention some years)

Average defense/Good offense - 7-9 wins (seed contention some years)

Good defense/Good offense - 8-10 wins (seed contention most years)

Good defense/elite offense - 9-11 wins (threat for a title)

Elite defense/good offense - 10-12 wins (title worthy)

If UND can find their way to recapture their defensive prowess...they'll make significant progress even if the offense only equals what it's done in prior years.  That needs to be the biggest point of emphasis for the staff.  If UND can do that and run the ball consistently well...then look out!

This staff won’t develop anything considered more than average or slightly above average defense. Bubba and his defensive assistants - despite being labeled “defensive guys” - are outdated and not capable anymore. Time has passed them by. It’s not 2001 anymore.

The whole Holinka leaving for St. Thomas and Schwenzfeier getting promoted thing last off-season was a major red flag and proved to be true this past season. Bubba is in over his head.

If/when Freund gets the head job, curious what he’d do with the defensive side of the ball.

That seems like the way our coaches think. The older guy starts.

Not saying Feeney won't be the guy, but what if Jerry comes out and kills it. Or what if Feeney kills it but then struggles later in the year.

You open up the competition, and don't be afraid to switch them out if the starter is costing us plays, drives or games.

Wouldn’t it be neat if our coaches were actually aggressive and nabbed a transfer portal QB to shake things up??

wont happen, though, too boring and content with mediocre football. Competition is never a bad thing, unless you’re UND football.

Also no NIL collective to assist.

If Bubba gets wasted and drives his car off the road and nothing happens then you know the University and players are behind him 100%.  That's the real test.

    Wouldn’t surprise me, honestly.

“Upon review of the driving under the influence charge, we’ve decided to issue a contract extension”.

But I do enjoy the reference here. Not much to do in Brookings, even if you’re head football coach …

It reminds me of back in the day. Had a bad year. Next offseason was hard as hell. The next season was a success. The following offseason was not as hard. That season was not as successful with a more talented team.

IMO coaches need to prepare their team like their job is on the line every game. That’s the difference between a Nick Saban and the guys who taste the bottom of his boots.

This is why Bubba and his staff aren’t cut out for it. Way too much inconsistency. So much.

There’s no pressure. UND football is like a country club. Job / contract extensions after losing seasons.

Sounds about like when Bubba said "Leave no doubt" back around 2015.   That didn't work out so well.

Actually, to be fair, the “leave no doubt” mantra was used in 2016 after UND was playoff snubbed in 2015. 2016 was Bubba’s best season, team went 9-2 and was seeded #7 in the playoffs. They of course went on to choke away a home playoff game lead but it was still a very good regular season (vs a horribly weak schedule) in terms of wins …
