Obviously UND needs to score, but having a ball-control offense and defense that disrupts the rhythm of these spread, up-tempo offenses goes a long way. Also, causing turnovers can even up a game real quick by giving offenses (even struggling offenses like UND) a short field and many "easier" opportunities.

If UND is going to win football games this season, my gut feeling is that it will be despite of Joe Mollberg. Bubba doesn't want a controversy in the locker room and that is why he is sticking with the guy he and his staff originally named the starter. Simple as that. UND, like they have done already, will need to win games by playing very good defense and special teams, and running the ball/not turning the ball over on offense. I have my doubts with Mollberg, because he just makes too many mistakes. Obviously, he can improve and I surely hope he does. The beginning of the Portland State game did look promising. Nevertheless, I feel Bartels is the better QB right now, going off of last season and this season. Bartels avoids the big mistake better than Mollberg, which is a big thing to consider, and I think most coaches around the country would agree with that. Bottom line, UND has two weeks to heal up and prepare for an SUU team that has only one win on the season. I expect UND, regardless of who the QB is, to go down to Utah and get their 4th win of the season. Of course, it won't be easy as UND has yet to win on the road this season. Go UND!

16 points vs. Robert Morris Shut out vs Missouri State 6 offensive pts vs Stony Brook 11 offensive pts vs Montana State 8 offensive pts vs. Montana UND's offense has work to do. Scoring 24 against Portland State was nice to see, but even 7 of those came via special teams and the QB who orchestrated it all is now going back to the bench. Lots of work left for the UND offense to do.

It's time for people to put the Stony Brook "jokes" to bed because apparently those assertions made earlier when UND played SB weren't so off after all. Stony Brook is a lot like UND; really good defense with a really bad offense.

Per Tim and Swyg on 1440 AM, Bubba says Mollberg will remain starting quarterback. Bubba cited the good start for Mollberg before the injury. Also, Bubba believes Mollberg is recovering well and likely will be the starter in a couple weeks vs. SUU.

Agree Bartels should be the guy moving forward.

Often times quarterbacks have the tangible attributes (arm strength, height, weight, etc.) but they can't make the correct decisions (intangibles). I think we may have a case of this with Joe Mollberg; he has the potential, but he's not the type of decision-maker required of quarterbacks. Both last year and last game, Bartels was the better decision-maker. I think that is huge for the way Bubba wants to play football, especially this year with how the defense is playing. Bartels deserves a shot because there is evidence to suggest he is the better decision-maker.

http://www.grandforksherald.com/content/wayne-nelson-und-team-shows-some-resiliency Article by Wayne Nelson with him getting after the poor attendance a bit. If UND wins their next two games, especially vs. Eastern Washington, then there will be good attendance vs Weber State.

Bartels scored two offensive touchdowns in one half of football. Mollberg hasn't scored two offensive touchdowns in an entire game this season. Bartels played better last year and again he looked better yesterday. I say give Bartels a chance, especially now that there's a two week period to make the transition.
-
With that said, Bartels still picked up some positive yards rushing with both some designed runs and improvisation yesterday.
-
Very good point. Bartels epitomized yesterday why the QB position is as much mental as it is physical. In the first half, without the mindset he was going to play, Bartels wasn't very effective. In the second half, after collecting his thoughts at halftime, Bartels came out and played real good. I say let Bartels prepare as the starter for 2 weeks and give him the opportunity to get us to .500 with a win vs. SUU.
-
I think the coaching staff has devoted a lot to having Mollberg be the starter so it will be difficult for the staff to bench Mollberg if he is healthy. With that said, Bartels played better in that half of football than Mollberg has anytime this season. Coaches need to take a long, hard look at this one, because as Bubba always says, starting Bartels may be the best move for the TEAM.

You can only worry about what you can control. That's obvious.

Wrong. I've said it before and I'll say it again. NDSU pulls away 1000 fans from out west and up north; those fans use to go to UND games. NDSU needs to be competed with. Yes UND needs to win, but having NDSU win national championships every season doesn't help either. Pretending NDSU isn't apart of the equation is just wishful thinking.
-
That's horrible Have to keep winning and NDSU has to lose some too
-
Hard fought win and a gritty effort by the defense to end the game. That was fun watching the defense close it out like that! However, UND doesn't win this game if Bartels doesn't play well in the 2nd half. Given how poor UND's offense has been with Mollberg, UND has to go with Bartels in 2 weeks versus SUU.
-
Solid prediction. I too am leaning that way...

Comments above reiterate a central message that I have too mentioned: UND football needs to regain respectability. For those who speak about "their time" and how it was in past eras, one must realize UND football has really been a joke since 2009 when UND lost to Sioux Falls and NDSU started making playoff runs. Once UND starts winning again, then word will spread among college kids, like it usually does, that UND football is "good" and worth watching and supporting.
-
Offense with a couple touchdowns and couple field goals. If they don't commit turnovers and self-inflicted errors, UND's offense is more capable than some believe. The defense will again set the pace of the game and lead the team. UND 20 PSU 10
-
Better than getting blown out or just not being able to move the ball or tackle. Then the issue becomes a talent or personnel issue which takes much longer to overcome. Team and coaches shouldn't be satisfied yet because wins and playoffs are needed, but this team is a lot further along than anyone initially imagined. They have the potential to already be a top Big Sky team.

http://www.undsports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=13500&ATCLID=209705417 Watching the highlights of the Montana game, it's even more apparent to me how close this UND team is to being good and winning ball games. UND only has ''self-inflicted' mistakes to really fix. If UND didn't have the 2 bad snaps, fumble the ball away within the five, and if Mollberg wouldn't have fumbled the ball away when sacked, UND likely would've won. Point is, if UND plays a disciplined, consistent four quarters, the offense will put up points. Vs Portland State for homecoming, UND's offense can score plenty if they are playing smooth. Hope to see more improvement from the Montana game to the Homecoming game.
-
Good lord people. The freshman holder and freshman kicker screwed up under pressure. So what? Yes it would've been huge if they made it, but UND isn't competing for titles this season anyway. Let's hope they learn and can start hitting big kicks for the next 3 and a half years starting Saturday.

There's no question the real causal perception of UND football, which I imagine is what the student's perception is too, is that UND football "sucks". That will change when, dare I say it, NDSU football respects UND football. Everyone listens to NDSU football fanatics about now NDSU is all and everything football when it comes to North Dakota. Heck, UND students even go to NDSU football games. When UND is competing and winning MOST of their games, then the perception will change; believe it or not, even amongst NDSU people. Right now, even with the improvement Bubba and the team have shown, UND hasn't started WINNING games yet on a consistent basis. Respect is different than 'love of'.
