I believe this national championship in hockey marks the beginning of a new Golden Age of UND athletics. FB will soon be challenging for conference and national titles, WBB will get back to the NCAA tournament, WH will get over the hump and start making appearances in the Women's Frozen Four and MH will continue doing what they are doing right now. As for MBB, if Jones doesn't take us to the top of the Big Sky Conference, then we'll find someone that will.

I could be wrong about all this, but it is amazing what hanging #8 can do for confidence and expectations. And I think that is a rising tide that will lift all boats.

Interesting point. Perhaps we should look to history to predict the future; what happened to UND athletics shortly after the 1997 men's hockey national championship?

Does anyone know what number palmborg was wearing yesterday?  If he was wearing #11, then I would be wrong about my compliments about jade( who's listed as #11) and instead direct those compliments to palmborg.

I believe it was Palmborg at #11, and yes, he had a nice day yesterday. He will be a nice backup option to Reyes and Arnell in the secondary. Sure looks like the staff has at least somewhat corrected the safety depth situation. Of course, that also depends on how the 2016 recruiting class looks in the fall.

Your point about the QBs including Keaton is a good one. Last year he left the huddle with his target in mind and never took his eyes off of him. Too easy to defend unless the WR is blazing by guys which it appears this group may not be. That's the one major issue with him as a QB.

Perhaps true. Coach Rudy needs to get on his guys. Either way, Studs is by far the best of the 3 QB options for 2016.

I'm just a little unsettled with the O line cohesiveness/depth,  qb depth and the wr position.

O line has some really good starters but will take time to gel.  D line handed it to them today.  Plus the depth is simply thin.  I guess with the combination of how strong our d line is and the fact that the o line hasn't had enough time together made it very apparent today.  If Grady comes back and they get 3-4 game experience under their belts I believe this will be a great group!

A lot of juniors there today but not one qb recruit.  Why? Heidelbuagh comes across as just not being ready. Yes, he's only a freshman and I will give some time to mature but the team might not have that option and could potentially need him ASAP if god forbid that Keaton is to go down.  He will need to grow up immediately as the depth this year is him and Bartles and Bartles simply hasn't shown enough with his time here.  We cannot have another 0-3 slide if our starting qb goes out.  Also, including Keaton, our qbs are zeroed in on their #1 target and never look to option #2.  When they had time in the pocket they still were locked in on their first read.  They leave the center just focused on read #1.  Noticed this last year as well.  Good defenses will exploit this.

Dulin: catch the ball!  Other then Clive, the speed within this group seems to be below average at this level.  I believe most are above average in downfield blocking however.  Again, depth is an issue.  Santiago maybe?  With oscar looking the way he did today and brady and Gordon, I could see santiago lining up in the outside quite a bit this year.

Even though jawon didn't fill up the stat sheet today, he is wickedly fast at OLB!  Has the toughness as well to make a considerable statement this season.

Und is getting closer and with their favorable schedule they should be playoff bound.  2-3 losses at the most, unless Keaton goes down, then it gets scary!

QB situation is not settled yet, that's for sure. It's ongoing. I too think UND needs to be more aggressive with that position. Studsrud is the starter, but there needs to be more top-end competition. Bubba and his staff need to bring in multiple QBs via either scholarship freshmen or transfers. For 2016, UND will have only 3 realistic QB options and only 1 of them is likely capable to lead this team to "big" wins; that is not ideal. Coach Schweigert and Coach Rudy need to adjust this situation; it's a priority moving forward.

Good news about the other weak areas - OL, WR, and DB - is that those spots have freshman coming in from the 2016 recruiting class.

I like UND's potential to wear defenses down with Nevermann, Norberg and Gordon and then counter it with "finesse" guys like Santiago and Oliviera and George's deep.

Olivera certainly isn't only finesse. That 4-on-4 goal line situation at the end was fun to watch with Olivera forcing his way into the end zone! This backfield has some real nice talent for 2016!

That's pretty easy.  18 schollies vs 13 schollies.  Idalski makes more than Jones.  Men buckets get paid for guarantee games.  Whockey gets nothing.

BU, Quinn, UNH and Maine are probably similar.

Womens rowing doesn't add to a FBS school, but they have to do it.  Boat houses are expensive and those teams are massive.  SDSU has equestrian which is a money pit.

Certainly both the scholarship number and the salary differential are controversial.

I cannot get over the fact that the Women's Hockey budget is bigger than Men's Basketball.  I wonder if there is another D1 Athletic Department in the country that does that?

Extremely damaging to UND athletics as a whole; successful athletic departments around the country do not prioritize like that.

Will you please stop making so much sense of a simple job task by a person in a leadership position?...

It's MUCH more complicated than that.

Cue Peter Gibbons:  "It's not that I'm lazy......It's that I just don't care"

Faison is complacent with his position on the NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey committee (http://www.uscho.com/ncaa/mens-division-i-ncaa-tournament/). He is the perfect example of a lazy athletics director on the borderline of retirement who gives no attention to non-hockey sports at UND. He's exactly what UND does NOT need at this point in time. UND needs advocates for the sports that have the most potential yet need a few more stimuli if you will, such as football and men's basketball.

What about the cost of attendance stipend they're giving to all scholarship athletes?  An additional $731,000 is needed to cover cost.

    http://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-football/3830702-update-und-pay-all-scholarship-athletes-stipends-2016-17

They need to continue to provide FCOA to the main sports, such as men's hockey, football, basketball, and volleyball. If they can't come up with the finances to at least do that, then they need to cut more sports (such as women's hockey; work around the Title IX issue).

Do you commend his communication skills (lack thereof), arrogance and ignorance?

    Great qualities for an AD.

Ultimately, that's all I see with this whole situation. Faison didn't handle this situation properly, and it's frustrating that he does just enough to garner semi-favorable reviews whereas he should be retiring and/or moving on from UND. The athletics situation at UND is a unique one with hockey being the main sport followed by the urge to resurrect and eventually maintain a top football and basketball program; I do not think Faison is capable of raising the funds and/or support for that tall task.

That seems logical, However, this championship could actually harm football recruiting in the long run, if it simply adds to the growing perception that hockey is the only sport that matters at UND and all other sports, especially football, are second-class.

Not sure how UND football being poised for a playoff season following UND hockey's national championship is supposed to hurt...

If anything, the entire Grand Forks community will get UND Fever.

To sum it up, the only reason Women's Hockey exists is because of Title IX.

Yes. Bad deal. Women's hockey should not exist at UND. Need more for other sports that actually attract large crowds (over 2500 spectators).

  13. UND football needs to consistently win (and that means playoff games given the bar that NDSU has set). Once that happens, UND fans will take action and go out to the Alerus Center to support UND football to victory.

So in that sense, I see UND hockey success being largely independent on UND football. Of course, the point of finances was brought up and that does possibly provide some crossover.

Same thing can maybe be said about Santiago.......if he was taller maybe he would have gotten some offers from some bigger schools etc..   We got a gem in Will and probably an even bigger gem in Santiago, glad we got them both!

Football is a team game. Need to get more than just one player like that every 4 years in order to win championships. That is where sound recruiting and development comes into play.

There are UND football fans all over, but nothing has been going on for years to get them excited.  Contrast that with the Frozen Four where there were tons of Sioux fans that just had a passing connection to UND and Grand Forks but make the Frozen Four an annual event.  It's a mistake to just assume that Grand Forks and ND are the only places that UND fans will come from.  FCS does not provide much opportunity for a big celebration at season end where UND football fans from all over the country can gather at the end of the season.  That has happened with the school down south, and it builds on itself.

Umm...Frisco, Texas would look awful nice filled with kelly green...

With that said, I agree that UND football hasn't given fans much of an opportunity to rally with each other and get excited. Even FCS playoff games in the Alerus Center offer an opportunity that has yet to be presented to the UND faithful.

Hopefully 2016 yields several Alerus Center playoff experiences...

  16. Although I would love to see a positive correlation, I don't think there will be. The support football gets is independent of the hockey program; UND football needs to produce and build their own support. UND football has been average at best since moving up from DII; however, if Bubba and company can do what is expected of them in 2016, then I think the fan base will improve, along with hopefully the in-game atmosphere and features.

Leave no doubt in 2016! With the facilities improving, UND football needs to keep growing, as well. Should be an annual top BSC club.

  17. Carson Wentz on Twitter: "Huge congratulations to the UND Men's hockey team! So cool. All we do is win here in this great state folks! Well deserved UND. #NoDak"

Exceptional move by this kid. He deserves support from the entire state of North Dakota. With that, this still is a UND site and the majority of this thread's focus should be on Will Ratelle and his potential NFL future.

If he was 4-5" taller he wouldn't have played for us.

Well I'm sure glad he played for UND, regardless. If UND had a defense comprised of 11 Will Ratelles, UND would be FCS national champions.

Wrong year.  My bad.  Still the point is little to no production in conference championships in the BSC.

Your point is purely idiotic. No knowledge on your behalf; do some research.

UND has only been in the Big Sky Conference for 4 seasons (2012-2013, 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016). That means they have won the conference 1 out of their 4 tries (25%). In comparison, the NDSU women have won the Summit League 0% of the time (not to mention, they've been in the Summit League longer than UND has been in the BSC).

If you look at NDSU women's basketball in their entirely (~50 seasons), you'll notice they've won the conference regular season only six times (1987, 1988, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1997). If you add in the national championships (5; 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996), you get 9 "successful years" by your standards. That's only (9/50) 18% success? That's worse than UND. UND has 13 regular season conference championships (1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2014). Add in the NCAA championships (1997, 1998, 1999) and you have a total of 14 "successful seasons". Not to mention, UND's first year of women's basketball was in 1974 (42 seasons), so they've had "success" by your standards 33% of the time (14/42).

    33% > 18%

Let me know how these FACTS work out with your logic.
