It's not doubt on my part. I just think Cal Poly is a little bit better and I don't think the match up is that good for UND this year. UND has been too susceptible to the big pass plays which is something Cal Poly feasts on. Also, teams have been able to throw the ball on Cal Poly and the Mustangs have been poor at getting pressure on the QB. But as we all know, throwing the football isn't UND's strength and I'm not sure UND can make them pay through the air.

You may be right. This is the kind of the game UND *has* to win if they want to take the next step as a program, though. What is that step? It's being a program that is annually recognized as a playoff contender, which is huge come playoff selection time. It also will go a long way towards building up UND's home crowd and regular attendance. UND needs to win games like this, and given this year's "leave no doubt" mantra, I am optimistic Bubba will have his team ready to take this one.

With that, though, you may be right and UND drops this one in disappointing fashion. No one knows. I'm excited for the ball game tomorrow. Everyone show up as you're able and support the boys in green (or in this case, grey).

I'm not sure our team is ready for an opponent this good..... just a feeling I have. I know our d can ball but as a full team we're just not there yet. Prove me wrong please, I'd love to have pancakes and crow sunday morning.

UND can play with Poly just fine; look at last year's game down in SLO. Is Poly a better team this season? Absolutely. But not improved to the point where UND can't play with them, especially at home in the Alerus. UND wins *IF* they win the turnover battle and reduce their penalty yardage substantially. No reason UND can't win this one since it's at home.

A lot of doubt starting to seep into the minds of some supporters; must be the injury news. UND does need to improve on offense, though. Eventually Rudolph will call a clean game that his offense executes -- hopefully it's against Cal Poly.

Sounds like they are out, Per Tom M. they are still looking for some $$$

Football program needs some $$$ for a lot of things, with the HPC phase II being the most important. Other pending upgrades do include equipment/helmets.

Anyone out there with some spare change?

True, but you can't force a bunch of hockey fans to love football (especially football on a smaller scale). For some people, it just comes down to personal preference, and that won't change.

There are so many types of fans:

Specific sport fans - (Hockey fans, Football fans, NFL fans, College football fans, FBS football fans, FCS football fans, Basketball fans, NBA fans, College basketball fans, etc.)

Casual fans - Fans that will go to a game or two for fun with friends or to tailgate, but otherwise don't follow the team the sport, and could give you the name of a single player.

UND Fans - Will attend or follow UND athletics, regardless of the specific sport, or the success.

Band Wagon fans - Only go to the most popular sport that is winning most frequently.

Hardcore fans - A lot of people on this board. You know the team, you know the development, you know the recruits. You fight through poor internet streams to watch your team. etc. etc.

Obviously there are plenty of other categories as well, but I think we also have to cut some people some slack. Even for fans who love sports in general, it is hard to find time for all sports. Hockey is, and will be, the most popular event in GF. It gets attention on a national scale in terms of college hockey, and even recognition through the NHL. NFL consumes many peoples Sundays, Monday nights, and even Thurs nights. Aside from those events, a lot of people do have families that they spend time with, kids sporting events, other events for kids, household responsibilities, etc. My point is, for many, there a limit to how much they are willing to prioritize going to a sporting event.

Now that I am done playing devil's advocate, I would certainly like more people to support the football and basketball teams, IN ADDITION to the hockey team. Unfortunately, winning solves problems. For many who have the previously mentioned life obligations, they don't want to come watch UND barely beat a Drake team, they'll wait until UND is highly ranked, and 4-0 or 5-1, with some relevance. I'm not saying that is right, but it is more realistic. (ex. look at the basketball team last year ... when they started winning and making some noise in the Big Sky, people showed up. Crowd against Weber was outstanding, and what you would like the program to get to on a regular basis.)

In terms of quality over quantity, I agree 100%. I think our athletic department is stretched too thin, and needs a more narrow focus overall. I hate cutting sports that exist, because it eliminates opportunities for some kids, but when you are talking about the athletic department as a business, you need to make smart decisions regarding your non-revenue generating sports.

Football is the most popular sport in America, which includes North Dakota. Grand Forks is a bit of a hockey niche, with hockey being a type of cultural favorite, but even so, UND football can draw a ton of fans if it wins consistently. How? Because it is football -- that simple; most popular sport overall. NDSU football has exploded in popularity because it has done "big time" things that the football fans of this region and state have always been primed to support. UND can join those ranks, too. From strictly a UND supporter standpoint, football can consistently draw large crowds if the product on the field is consistently winning. UND fans, alumni, and students would love to be associated with a top 10 FCS football program that gets positive publicity on a regular basis.

This year I'd like to see 2 scholarship qbs. We need to get to the point where the backup is the most popular player to the fans. Any time the starter makes a mistake were should be able to complain about how the second string guy would be doing so much better.

I agree. This, to a degree, lines up with my last post above.

Although I am not advocating for fans to be upset and always calling for backups, I do strongly believe UND needs to simply improve the talent in the two-deep. With that, the competition will naturally improve the capability of the starters.

The few places on this team where we see this is running back, defensive line, and linebacker; not coincidentally, those spots are the most complete and productive.

Everyone keeps harping on a lack of speed on the outside ("we need a burner")...a skilled receiver with blazing speed is kind of like trying to find a 7'0" center in basketball with skills...it's easier said than done.  I hate comparing us to NDSU, but who was their burner over their run?  They had speed out of the slot in Ryan Smith...but we've got a comparable player in Santiago, and a kid from Washington coming in with a similar type of skillset.  Zach Vraa didn't have elite speed...and neither does Urzendowski...however they are/were both highly skilled receivers that use their route running and the offense's ground and pound success to get open in playaction.  We've got two skilled, but highly inexperienced true freshman receivers that I honestly don't even know how well they do running deep routes, since we haven't really called any (other than a 35 yarder to Wanzek on the 1st play of the USD game...I'd like to see more of that).  My hope is that as our young offensive skill players get more comfortable in the offense...and our line continues to gel, we see more creativity to make big plays happen.

This is not to say that I'm against finding big play receivers...I'm hoping we can find playmakers and have them work out for us as well as some of the defensive athletes we've signed the last couple of years.  So far the class looks good...I'd like to see 4-5 linemen like others have said, along with a traditional receiver with decent speed.

I do not disagree with you, at all.

Essentially, the offense just needs more personnel and, with that, more competition. The offense is thin in many spots and that has resulted in the quality of play at those spots being average to below average (namely OL, WR, and QB). Competition produces better players, which is partly why attrition to even backup players hurts the overall team and program so much. Have to recruit kids that will stick it out the ENTIRE 4 to 5 YEARS, even if they are not tops on the depth chart.

Remember, there are two ways to improve personnel: development and recruiting. Recruiting more depth is essential (even players that are of the same style we have now), so there's that; but developing the young guys on this team is also key. I expect the offensive line and receivers on this team to continue to improve as the season progresses just because of their youth and inexperience; that bodes well for UND.

Has Santiago played much at receiver this year (it's where he started when he first came to UND)?

He caught a TD as a wide out against South Dakota, so yes, he has played some receiver in certain packages. It is his only career touchdown reception at UND, though.

However, given the UND offensive struggles at times, I think it would be worth it to try Santiago out wide or in the slot more with Brady Oliveira in the backfield.

Yes I totally agree that we need to play Santiago more in the slot or at wide out.  Since Clive went down we've had no deep threat and this would help with that and should spread out the defense more.  Plus it would get Santiago in to space as you said since he isn't finding any space from the RB position.  He should have some wide out skills correct being he was recruited as such?  Plus Brady seems physical enough to handle 20 plus carries.  I'd still like to see Santiago get 20 touches but them coming from a combo of places would be nice.  Time for the offensive play calling to get a bit more creative.

    Spot on

Better offensive lineman make better skill players.  It obviously would be awesome to just recruit some out of HS but guys tend to be more open down field when we are running all over teams or our QB can sit there for 4 seconds and let the route develop.

From a preference standpoint, I'm fine with first getting in the necessary numbers of offensive linemen, but you can't overlook the skill positions either. That's partly why UND's offense is so anemic right now. Youth and lack of speed on perimeter and disorganized line play. It's a team game -- need BOTH offensive line play and guys who are good in space or have a way about them of getting into the end zone. Right now, UND has limited play in both areas and the result is a "points are hard to come by" offense.

Might mean another good day for Brady, and maybe our leading rusher in yards again?  Still hoping Santiago can break a long one this week.

Brady and Santiago both having success is not mutually exclusive. In other words, it's possible to get both of them involved (and have big days) by playing Santiago more out wide or in the slot while Brady (or any other back) is in the backfield.

I'd take 4-5 OL in this class total. Biggest area of need for depth right now. Going to have a lot of guys graduate after 2017 and need guys ready to go for 18. That will be this years redshirts and this recruiting class. Huge need and 1-2 won't cut it. Should have at minimum 4 OL in every class regardless of depth but right now it's needed more.

4 to 5 offensive linemen is a fine number, as long as UND can also get in 4 to 5 offensive skill players also (QB, RB,WR,TE). The entire offense needs more talent, in general; that is offensive linemen with good feet and big play ability from the skill guys.

Given how UND wants to play football, and also considering the type of recruits in the region, UND will continue to build depth on defense and I think they have to. That's how Bubba and Schmidt are ultimately going to win games here at UND, so its important to not forget that.

    Brings us to 3 DL, 3 LB, 1 OL, 1 QB, & 1 RB/WR in the 2017 class.

This offense is still begging for more talent -- at least one more player at each offensive unit (OL, TE/FB, RB, QB, WR).

Poly is ranked #16 in the STATS poll. We remain on the outside looking in.  We had 41 points last week, this week we have 40..... makes sense that we would slide back after a win on the road.

Have to beat ranked teams. UND has that opportunity on Saturday. If UND wants to compete for conference championships and make the playoffs, these are the type of games UND needs to win.

    Get it done Hawks

UND will probably be favored in all the remaining games after next week, but with the lack of offense they will still be in some dogfights. Odds are that UND drops a game or two because the breaks and calls don't go their way on a given Saturday.

Also, the last time UND went an entire season with one quarterback was a long time ago I'm thinking. They are doing a nice job so far of trying to protect Studsrud physically, but if he were to miss any period of time they could literally lose to any team on the schedule.

That's fair. I hope the team can stay healthy and UND surprises us with a couple comfortable wins (10-14 point margin).

Why are you knocking a kid for doing something that greatly helped him? There was a lot of uncertainty with a new coaching staff and what not. He transferred closer to home and that decision may benefit his future greatly.

I was not knocking the kid. If anything it was a knock on the makeup of UND teams under Mussman. Golladay made a commitment to the University of North Dakota when very few others gave him an opportunity, played on two poor teams, and then left when the times got tough. It undeniably hurt UND further. Some of his UND teammates were explicit in displaying their displeasure regarding Golladay's decision. Maybe he wanted to be closer to his family, but that just augments the fact that UND shouldn't recruit a large number of players from out of this area. Fortunately, Bubba has emphasized recruiting North Dakota and Minnesota far more than Mussman did.

Best of luck to Golladay; he has been putting up great numbers and he is a special talent. Would've been nice to see him finish out at UND.

I'm sure it's gonna suck for him to get paid to play next year on a proffesional team.

That Wentz character came off an FCS squad. Will Ratelle received an opportunity. Cooper Kupp is currently playing in the BSC and he'll be playing on Sundays next year. It is possible for the FCS to produce capable NFL players, not to mention Golladay had to sit a year because of his move.

Yes those three players I named were as talented as any players we've ever had at their positions.

Well, football is the ultimate team game. Someone forgot to tell Mr.Golladay that.

I'm not sure healthy margins are a thing for us this year.

But they were last season? 45-14 vs No. Colorado; 45-21 vs Cal Poly. Didn't know regression was the objective this season. Expectations need to be higher than that.

Pretty ugly, but I'll take it. To go to MSU on their homecoming and win is huge. Nice work by the entire team. Some thoughts:

-Reyes played like a great player yesterday. He made some huge plays and had no coverage issues that hurt the team. Arnell also had a much better game than the last couple of weeks.

-Studsrud is not a great FCS quarterback, but he just doesn't make many big mistakes which is perfect for UND's offense and style of play. After seeing the disaster MSU had at the QB position it could be much worse for UND.

-Donnell Rodgers is going to be a great player at UND. In fact he is already very good.

-Coe had a great block while playing RT on the long TD run. Hate to see Cox get hurt, but maybe they found something here? Would be tough to roll with a freshman at center though.

-Not sure why all the hate for Rudolph. Everyone knows this is the style of play UND is going to use. The offensive line is new and they lost the home run hitter at WR. They are going to have to play close to the vest and try to win games this way.

-I'm not sure I would have gone with the all out blitz on the long pass play that MSU converted. The QBs had extreme accuracy issues, why not rush four and make MSU drive the field?

-Several of the penalties were killers. Have to be more disciplined.

-Game of the year next week. Beat Cal Poly and I think this team has a good shot of getting to 7 wins.

Where do you see the other 2 losses then? If UND can beat Cal Poly, they shouldn't lose more than 1 more game the rest of regular schedule unless injuries and poor play calls pile up.

Precisely, we don't exactly have Marcus Hendrickson at QB throwing to Golladay and Hardin right now.

That group was talented? I just remember seeing them get blown out game after game against legitimate FCS teams.
