Hiring a new coach at a low salary is already setting him up to fail; doesn’t allow for revisitation following success if no consistent success to begin with. Again, we’ll see just how important salary is to the pool of candidates; definitely a factor.
-
It’s “not there” because of misallocation. We all know where the true priorities are, which is a different topic altogether. NDSU, SDSU, and USD have less juggling within their athletic departments. Not to say UND still can’t get a serviceable head men’s basketball coach, but he will be grossly underpaid relative to the league standard. I think a good current DII Head Coach - happy with 160k - is the best route.
-
Very poor previous 2 seasons. It is not good timing due to this.
-
Recruiting ability is important, although I would definitely say not the most important. The major worry I have is he has no prior collegiate head coach experience with success; UND could fall right into a trap if not to consider this. I prefer someone with a history of success as a head coach (either DII or DI).
-
Wouldn’t hate that hire - he’s been there, done that at the D1 level (with NDSU that is).
-
This is concerning to me.
-
What happened after ‘14-‘16? That is my question. UND needs consistency. UND had good seasons under Jones, just not enough of them.
-
This should always be the thinking. Bring in the best head coach candidate regardless of location and previous ties. From a basic perspective, the UND news release suggested this by saying “a national search ...”, although this is quite standard talk.
-
It is simple for me: 1) winning record as a head coach (DII or DI) and/or 2) winning record as “long-time” (5+ seasons) DI assistant coach I weigh point #1 a bit more. I do not care if the candidate has connections to specifically UND, but connections to the region are a good thing. All in all, the lists that have been floating around are in the ballpark. I just hope UND can raise the salary pool a bit (like football did in 2013 when hiring Bubba) so the job is more appealing.
-
This says the most, in my opinion. UND men’s basketball, as a DI program, is supported horribly as demonstrated by salary comparisons. It needs to be taken seriously by administration before anything remarkable on-the-court will happen on a consistent basis. Sad state of affairs at UND; desperately need HPC phase II and increased salary pool for UND MBB. In fact, I’d call it embarrassing.

3 of 5 getting NFL opportunities thus far. RB Oliveira and DL Cieslak still not accounted for. As said earlier, Oliveira may be settling in for CFL.
-
gfhockey, You and "your boys" better have HPC Phase II a done deal by the end of 2019. That is all. Carry on. Sincerely, All UND Football Fans
-
All likely undrafted FAs - don’t expect any to be drafted. Hope a few make the 90 man roster for training camp. It will be an uphill battle for any of them to make a final roster, but I’ll be rooting for them. John Santiago, Brady Oliveira, and Deion Harris are likely top 3. I’m less hopeful with Tank Harris and Austin Cieslak, but you never know.

7-4 should get UND into the playoffs. Benchmark for UND football should ALWAYS be playoffs or bust, in my opinion.
-
I disagree. Boltmann can make an impact at WR, especially if injuries unfortunately hit (and more than likely are going to). Although I suppose Boltmann won’t make a “huge impact”, I don’t see how he would make a huge impact on the defensive side of the ball either. He’s a playmaker who deserves to be on offense with the ball in his hands.

I’m not sure if you are trying to argue, and if you are, I have no idea about what. A large deal of my posts over the past year have mentioned the importance of High Performance Center Phase II, so I certainly am not arguing about that. Funding is needed for this important project - HPC Phase II. Do you think prospective recruits and current players would like the HPC phase II? Absolutely.
-
In my post you just quoted: “Awful basic lesson here I guess but I just wanted to remind everyone that UND does perhaps need to step up its approach some in order to better appeal to talented recruits. Yes, that does include improving uniform/helmet alternates and the spring game.” I still stand by my original statement that HPC Phase II would do more for UND football than an “improved spring game experience”, but other things like uniforms and spring game planning are factors too. Of course HPC Phase II costs more ... what do the recruits and current players want?
-
I do agree a successful program philosophy is far more about the prospective recruits and CURRENT players than the alumni and fans of yesteryear. The alumni and fans (aka us on this forum) may not like to hear that, but UND football support will definitely be there - regardless of the uniforms or spring game antics - if the team wins a bunch in the fall. Guess what folks- really good recruits/players are those who do such winning. Not those in the stands whose time has passed. Awful basic lesson here I guess but I just wanted to remind everyone that UND does perhaps need to step up its approach some in order to better appeal to talented recruits. Yes, that does include improving uniform/helmet alternates and the spring game. With that said, MOST IMPORTANTLY, HPC Phase II would do far more for UND football than 10 beautiful uniform combos and a flawless spring game combined, but it requires big $$$ that UND doesn’t have [yet].
-
This has also been my experience, almost exactly in fact. Scary. The Guy doesn’t provide much true dedication to the entirety of UND athletics via SM posts, comments, podcasts, etc. and the small-time alumni, especially, in my opinion are forgotten and/or ignored. Like I said earlier, hopefully Chaves eventually proves me wrong. As long as HPC Phase II gets done sooner rather than later, I’ll be content.

Grover had a few overthrows that were ugly. Ketteringham is a lock to be the starter in 2019. Grover vs. Zimmerman for No.2 QB is still up in the air I’d say.
-
Hence my “control the weather” statement. If not for weather, SDSU was to be in their regular season venue. NDSU will be in their regular season venue.
-
Quite similar, but they keep score though. I suppose SDSU football is UND football’s standard ...
-
SDSU moved game to indoor practice facility. But, here at UND we are able to control the weather ... Alerus Center is still indoors.
-
I’ve seen it - it is actually televised all over North Dakota. It is played in their actual regular season venue. Actual score is kept. Actual activities before the game are held. It actually promotes their football program for the next season.
