Am I worried? No. Would I be surprised if UND loses by one score? No. If UND loses by one score, remember the failed chances to get more points in the first half - UND had several opportunities to score more if not for turnovers and conservatism.

I’m not a fan of Freund’s offense. Period. 2 minute drive without any timeouts: 1st down - run for 6 yards 2nd down - pass with failed protection and sack 3rd down - run Bubba and Freund playing off each other and going with conservative BubbaBall. This program with Schweigert isn’t winning any championships … ever.

Rationalizing mediocrity is a task that folks around UND have become quite good at since the move to division I. Thus why I agree with your earlier take on UND’s struggles after delaying the move up. It’s challenging, and perhaps being patient is truly what we all have to be given the major limitation to success is finances. I will say, however, after a certain point (which is why I brought up expectations), being overly patient and expecting different results with the same plan is a bit irrational.

I completely agree with you here, Ira. Much work to be done to continue to bolster support for UND football. Phase II of the Fritz Pollard Jr. Athletic Center is a must if UND is to be an eventual national champion. Requires financial support, and without a significant single donor/donation, it requires numerous modest donations. The goal then is best acquired with volume, and to attract that volume, UND must be competitive and ultimately win against regional competition. Perhaps new leadership with new ideas is the most efficient way to get this done, but it would definitely come with risk and potential failure; then again, don’t all champions take risk? It is a differentiator. Lastly, I certainly agree UND needs an improved football coaching salary pool to be more competitive, but, with that, the question then becomes could UND hire a more talented coaching staff with that?

Since 2014 (Bubba’s first season as head coach), including this season and assuming no playoffs, UND has made the playoffs three times (.375) and won one playoff game out of four (0.25). Those averages do not meet expectations. Who is held accountable? Or, is no one held accountable because the expectations are “soft” for UND football?

Frustrating that this team’s “killer instinct” regressed from the spring to the fall. I think the leadership tactics, both players and coaches, could have been better. Definitely unique situation, but possible the strategy taken to transition from spring to fall was the wrong one.

Tough situation not having the resources; that is, both the donors and, as such, UND football. Makes it harder for Bubba. Gotta do well with what you got. What is the expectation for UND football internally and externally? That is not always clear.

The 10/2/21 UND-NDSU game should show everybody what the Alerus Center atmosphere and home field advantage can be. Question is, how do you keep it there all season long? two major components, in my opinion: wins and presentation/effort put forth by UND and Alerus staff. Ya’ll can argue about how much each is weighed.

Screw ndsu and the “team they want to be”. Their heads are so big down in Fargo, they can’t walk straight. UND needs to get their sh*t together and beat those punks. For 2021, looking like a long shot, as likely UND won’t make playoffs. But 2022…
