  1. Personally, I hope that all native american funding is pulled and given to other programs. We now have no ties to any native american references so instead I would prefer they spend the money on something that can help advance the school.
  2. I think overall Kelly is a fine president. I think he has a good vision of what this university could be. That being said, I really think he botched the entire logo situation. Even as a student at the university I have never thought that Kelly nor Faison have showed enough support for the name. They both represent the school and neither of them went to bat for it when they were needed. Instead they sat back and let the process unfold. Could you see a president at a big time university throwing their own school under the bus like these two did. Again I think Kelly and Faison can both be very good for the school. But, as far as the nickname goes, I think they both screwed up royally. I compare it to a manager for a baseball team. If your player gets tossed or is arguing with an ump then you get your butt out there and stand up for your guy. You don't have to agree with your player but you better show him who's side your standing on and I never once felt like Kelly or Faison were standing behind the logo, alumni, or school in regards to the name and its a shame because that should be one of the primary duties of their job.
  3. Pretty weak statement if you ask me. It feels like Kelly is just throwing the logo out like its a piece of garbage. Maybe its just me but we are already being forced to get rid of it; the least he could do is give it the respect it deserves.
  4. My understanding is that the school must have a new nickname and is allowed only 1 or 2 years to simply use North Dakota. I could be wrong though.
  5. I really feel like this policy is going to end up back firing on the natives. When this name gets changed and people start seeing those logos pulled down there is going to be a lot of angry people that are going to hold the natives american population responsible. Not saying its right but when people lose something dear to them they do dumb stuff. Just a fact of the world we live in. In some ways I'll be happy the controversy is gone, in other ways I hope that Standing Rock comes to regret their decision in the future. Overall, as a current UND student and follower, its a very sad day.
  6. Does anyone have a link to a sketch of the practice facility? I've seen the sketches for the stadium ones but not the practice facility.
  7. All I know is that the site designated for construction was from columbia going east to include the old ralph and from 2nd ave going south to the railroad tracks. The job said it was for designing an indoor track with work to begin tomorrow afternoon but I assume they will just start Monday.
  8. Just had some site prep work for what is going to be the new facility. Basic work for contractors might start as early as Monday. What that all entails, I do not know.
  9. NDSU is and always will be UND's little sister. They will start playing every other year pretty soon here. After they realize how big the game is and how much money the game brings in they will play every year once again.
  10. Yes it is one part of a two part bill. The issues I have are: #1- California's governor calling illegal immigrants "our people." They are not our people, they are illegals and shouldn't be in the U.S. #2- It says some of the criteria is that the students have to have good attendance in high school. Well if they are illegals, then why do we allow them into our high schools? #3- We have our own kids in this country that can't afford to go to college or have to take out huge loans that will take forever to pay off, and the illegals get to go for free? #4- After they graduate they can't use the education we gave them here because they are illegal and can't get a job that you would need a college education to get. California is turning into a leech on the back of America. Their leaders have no concept of money in any way, shape, or form. I just don't understand the concept of allowing illegals to stay in the country much less have them be able to collect welfare, medical treatment, and now free education. In California alone, illegal immigrants cost the state between 10 and 20 billion dollars a year in medical cost, education, and jails. source: http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/politics/Illegal-Immigrant-Costs-Benefits-Disputed--92549134.html That is absolutely unacceptable. California is just one of those states that tries to spend its way out the recession and borrow its way out of debt. Not exactly a winning recipe.
  11. I don't know if any of you have seen this new act approved by California called the "dream act", but if you haven't you might want to read this article on yahoo. http://news.yahoo.com/california-dream-act-approved-illegal-immigrants-013617230.html Basically, the California government, which already doesn't have money, has passed this act that takes Californian's tax dollars and allocates those dollars to pay for illegal immigrants to get scholarships to go to college! Yes you read that correctly. California is making their citizens pay for illegal immigrants to go to college. So I guess if you are an illegal California will give you all the benefits that real Americans can't. Hmmmm and they wonder why they have money problems. How do the citizens there accept what is happening? Thank god I live where people use common sense.
  12. Ya that is correct, Riddle's will be next to Ruby Tuesdays
  13. I work with all the construction companies. The construction jobs that I have direct knowledge of is: a new Sleep Inn directly south of the Alerus, further south I believe it was some black gold office. Down on 32nd Ruby Tuesdays is going up next to IHOP and Olive Garden started construction last week at the site of the old movie theatre on the south side of the mall. Obviously there is a bit more going on than that but those are the ones that I have been involved in prepping for construction.
  14. This is simply not true. When was the last time you went out west? I graduated from Minot High in 07 and the population was estimated around 36-38,000. The 2010 census showed Minot at 40,888, then in 2011 the Minot Development Corporation held another census that estimated the city at almost 46,000. In comparison Grand Forks 2010 census estimated the cities population at 52,838. The 2010 census showed Ward county had a population of 61,675 while Grand Forks county was at 66,861. I guarantee ward county is already bigger than Grand Forks county. You also have to take into account that the oil boom isn't just affecting the larger cities. You have small towns like Stanley, Tioga esc esc that are seeing significant growth as well. Larger towns are getting bigger, smaller towns are becoming medium sized towns. In fact, outside of Fargo, the east doesn't compare to the west as far as growth and economic opportunities. Not even close.
  15. I'm from the west side of the state (Minot). I cant tell you what Williston is like but I'm sure it is nuts. Minot is obviously hurting from the flood but I can't imagine them not recovering. One silver lining to the Minot disaster is that the town is growing towards the south like a weed. All of the new housing and infrastructure that has been developed over the last couple years was well out of the way of the food. My parents back in Minot are currently building a new home on the south side of Minot and I can tell you first hand that the housing market in Minot before the flood was absolutely ridiculous. I've heard if you want to build a new house in Minot there was a waiting list of over a year before the constuction companies could get to it. My parents new house is in an area that has something like 500 new houses going up and that is just one of the areas going up, everywhere you look in every direction has houses staked out and they just keep building block by block. Now to your question. I don't think any city is going to be catching up to Fargo. That being said it is inevitable that the west will have a much higher population level than the east withing the next 10-20 years.
  16. This is kind of off topic but to an extent it does have some of the same NA issues. Apparently the Indian Affairs Committee is upset with the fact that the government used the code name Geronimo for Bin Laden. I actually laughed when I read the article. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_bin_laden_geronimo Again I am not posting this for any political agenda, just simply pointing out another NA leader/ tribe upset with their names being used. I think this is getting out of hand. "These inappropriate uses of Native American icons and cultures are prevalent throughout our society, and the impacts to Native and non-Native children are devastating," Tuell said. "Apparently, having an African-American president in the White House is not enough to overturn the more than 200-year American tradition of treating and thinking of Indians as enemies of the United States," Newcomb wrote. "It's another attempt to label Native Americans as terrorists," said Paula Antoine of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. Gimme a break.
  17. Obviously you guys don't realize it. The Sioux name is the real source of all reservation problems. Just ask them.
  18. Well, this sucks. I felt like we dominated the game for almost the entirety. Gotta hand it to the UM goalie 40 plus saves and shut out the best team in the country. That was so hard to say. This is about the time I wish the frozen four was a 3 game series but nothing we can do about it. God this sucks. EEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. No kidding, I can't stand watching referees affect the outcome of a game. Especially in a championship event. Call the obvious but let them settle it. SWALLOW THE WHISTLE!!
  20. I gotta tell you I think I'm more worried about getting hockey east officials than anything. God knows you can't slap a guy on the ass without getting a penalty from those guys.
  21. Ya i grew up in minot. My neighbor is his uncle. Met Josh a few times, very nice guy. Comes back to Minot a few times every year. Yes he was only like 2 classes from graduating college and left with his girlfriend to move to California. He was walking in some mall and a photographer stopped him and asked him to model for him. The rest is history as they say.
  22. The thing is though the NCAA still has to abide by the law that why I say they don't have the weight legislation does. The state could use the argument that by not allowing the name the NCAA is a private entity. If that would happen the NCAA would have to fold like a house of cards because they would have to be taxed like any other private entity and the NCAA will do anything to avoid that. That is the NCAA ultimate nightmare. I just think that if they NCAA wasn't willing to actually have dialogue then the president wouldn't becoming. I think one of his gremlins would be doing that dirty work. I think the NCAA will just say alright enough is enough we have enough to deal with invloving the Fiesta Bowl, concerns about paying players, and concerns about these colleges apparently paying athletes. The nickname is just another thing they don't need and in comparison to the other events I just don't think they really care all that much. Hopefully they say we got the closest tribes approval, like Florida State and thats that. (best case scenario)
  23. I don't know whether to be excited about the meeting or scared. I'm excited because the NCAA president is coming and he knows he doesn't have the weight that our legislation does. Couple that with the fact that he has his hands full as it is with everything else going wrong in the eyes of the nation with the NCAA. I just don't think he has the will to fight another battle and he might fold. However, it worries me that Grant Shaft, Kelly, and those likes are at the meeting simply for their seemingly anti Sioux stance. Some of me does think that won't matter because Carlson is going to be present and I think he would have a $h!t fit if they aren't fully committed to keeping the name. Hopefully all goes well and hopefully Shaft pulls his head out and offers a seat at the table for a rep from Spirit Lake. Just do what it takes to keep the name and keep us of the sanctions list! Make your school, fans, and state proud and be considered saviors, or lose it and lose any backing you currently have from the public. Whether they like it or not there is a good chance their jobs depends on keeping the name. That is my opinion but when push comes to shove losing the name would piss a lot of people off and those people won't soon forget the names of the people that didn't get the job done.
  24. I actually totally disagree with inviting standing rock. They already have said many times they don't want any part of the name situation so now when its in the tribal councils interest to come I say don't let them. They made their bed let them sleep in in. I would invite Spirit Lake though because they have been actively involved since the beginning.
