We also were without Sanderson (easily our best player that season) for the frozen faceoff and NCAAs in 2022. I honestly think we may have beaten 1 or both of those teams with him because those were close, winnable games.  If we would have had that punch on the power play and could have driven more offense from the back end, we have a way better chance.

Completely agree. He was at the point of his development that he could take games over single handedly and no one could skate with him.  Very few players at UND have had that ability.  And the fact that he was injured diving across the crease to save a goal that clinched a 1st round win and got his hand sliced open makes me like him even more.  We were robbed as fans not getting to watch him in the playoffs.

I don't disagree, but that really didn't happen until about 3 minutes left in the 2nd period. UND was winning 2-1, but had possession of the puck most of the game and the shots were 35 to 10 (and an even greater margin for shot attempts) when CC tied it on a questionable goal. Don't discount goaltending or the lack of good goaltending. Persson made exactly one tough save all night (right before the tying goal), but was fighting the puck all night and leaving rebounds. It appears that the CC goal that tied it at 2-2 deflated the team and gave all of the momentum to CC. Persson was not good either night this weekend, and was not good in either Friday night game against Miami. UND needs more consistency from the goalie, and they are not getting it right now. Persson's save % is below 90%, which is not good for a college goaltender. He can be very good and won some games for UND early, but lately he is a question mark. He never had a save % above 90% at Miami, but everyone made excuses that it was the team in front of him. The eyes don't lie and he is not a difference maker at this point. I hope that Hedquist gets at least one start this weekend until Persson gets his confidence back. IMHO, goaltending is once again the biggest issue facing this team. It has to be better to win 2-1 and 3-2 games against teams that trap like CC, Duluth and Notre Dame.

I say it every year. Give me a consistent .910 goalie and we’ll be in the tourney and win at least a game most likely, .920+ and we’re a frozen four team playing for a title.

This team is good enough offensively to make a run with a .910 goalie.

  3. Tough to see some people on here tying their daily personal fulfillment to the success of a college hockey program they have no influence over. If you guys were fans of UNO or SCSU you probably would have jumped off the ledge by now. It's apparent the way some "fans" pop up out of the woodwork only when things are going bad to recount all the way this program has personally wronged them. Find some balance guys.

  4. To the people saying that the tape is out on UND.  Are you sure the teams UND will be playing down the stretch have the type of players(See Mberko) or dedication to this style of play? I don't see BU or Michigan dropping into a 1-4 trap no matter how successful it was in a couple series. CC was impressively efficient at it and they seem to have the full team buy in that it's what they will be doing exclusively.  Pair that with a ridiculously good goalie and you have a scary team to play in the postseason.  I'm telling myself this is just a bad matchup for UND, hopefully this coming weekend proves that out.

Wonder how much time the boys spent in the altitude machine? I think Colorado College is a bit higher even than DU.

Yup, Colorado Springs is above 6,000 feet whereas Denver is a measley 5,200 or so.  I think my RA saw I was from North Dakota and purposively put me on the 1st floor so I didn't pass out moving into my dorm.

What destinations are there from GFK? MSP, Vegas, Mesa and Orlando? Can you fly direct to all of those from Winnipeg? Guessing you can fly direct to all of them from Fargo? I think they need to be creative and find a way to add a flight that neither Winnipeg or Fargo has access to. NYC? Seattle? New Orleans? Just thinking out loud

Agreed, that'd be a way to get Fargo people driving to GF to fly. Seattle would be nice in order to access the PNW more directly.

From experience, this happens out of Fargo just as much Grand Forks. And it is not fun regardless of where it happens at.

I was referring to flying direct from Fargo to Chicago where as out of GFK you have to connect in MSP.

Was looking at flights to Chicago for a trip in May yesterday. To fly from Fargo price was $233. To fly from Grand Forks the price was $508.

Yeah....I will be flying from Fargo.

But if you use the handy dandy true cost calculator on GFK's website it... still costs way less to drive to Fargo. Not to mention the risk of a missed or delayed connecting flight ruining your vacation

Well I think it was completely on our goalie....should've been yanked after he didn't stop the second shot on the first goal Miami scored.

I mean he likely wants the 2nd and 3rd back, but the 2nd was a point blank shot 2-1....the 3rd was a blown coverage top of the crease look.

Completely agree.  Last night was an everyone issue, and I think after the 4th goal against Ludvig made some big time saves to keep us alive.

Are you saying Perrson should’ve been pulled after it was 2-1?

Total travel for that UND scenario ... better than most years, but its still 1800 miles, round tripping and all.

At least the Badgers did have to leave town... to go to Green Bay for regionals and Milwaukee for the NCAA.   Total travel ... under 500 miles.

Minnesota 2003:   didn't even have to leave town.  WCHA in St Paul, regionals at Mariucci, and Frozen Four back in St Paul.   Argh.

CC hasn't won a NCAA title since last the tournament was held at the Broadmoor Arena in Colorado Springs.   (They did come close ... 1996. Sigh.)

Denver is another that won a hometown FF.   BU of course.  Never even left hometown.

Over and over, the arguments for moving teams around from one regional to another really only favors the Boston schools, and the NE teams.  So its not surprising that the NE based mouthpieces like Adam Wodon, don't want any change to a system that favors them.

I say lets make sure the Frozen Four never offers a team a home crowd advantage.  No more Boston, Albany, Providence (St Paul, Denver)... yes to Tampa, Dallas, Las Vegas.  If the Regionals have to be "neutral ice", then the Frozen Four should be too.

    /end rant

Let’s just play all the NCAA games in Australia so we truly have neutral sites with no fans there to upset the pure neutrality of the competition. Doesn’t that sound exciting?

I've liked Kunz game the last 2 weekends. He's earned some time higher up in the lineup. Let Johannes get 100%

Yes, get Johannes healthy for the stretch run.  It's a good time to play Miami then have a bye weekend. That's 3 full weeks and if he's not healthy for Colorado Springs give him a whole month to recover.

Teams are trying a "sliding box" more traditional PK. It's not getting to (sliding to) the wings fast enough (to UND's benefit) on the cross seam pass.

I expect someone to go "diamond" to get closer to the shooter wings and the umbrella point. The danger is the down low 2 on 1 the diamond opens up. Which devil ya wanna dance with.

    Exactly

You have to think teams will attack the points and wings more, as some have done in the past against our PP.   You just can't let guys like Gaber, Mac, and Blake tee it up.

Attack Blake's wing, move it over to OMac's wing. Playing aggressive on that wing too? Pass it down low for a 2 v 1.

The defense and goaltending have exceeded my expectations. UND is currently tied for eighth in the nation at 2.4 Goals Allowed/Game. And it seems like they're getting better.

Offensively, the defensemen have scored just seven goals so far this season. Seven of the 100 goals UND has scored.

Two seasons ago, defensemen scored about 26% of UND's goals. Last season, 20% of UND's goals. This season, 7%. But it doesn't seem like it's holding the team back.

Sometimes when defenseman score a large % of the goals it tends to indicate a lack of scoring punch up front. For example, the year wolanin led the team in scoring.

It will be extremely interesting to see how the boys play against Miami.  This last weekend particularly, they concentrated on skating hard and playing responsible defense, even outside their D zone.   Playing against Miami, will they be tempted to lose a little of that discipline and show some of that old carelessness?  These guys have been playing at a very high level all year long, so I am not implying that they will become sloppy.   But it would be human nature for them to lose some of that urgency that made them so good against DU.

There are probably half a dozen teams that have the offensive talent UND has, but how would you like to try to defend against this team, up and down the lineup? One thing:  I would tell my players to stay the hill out of the box.

No kidding, I don't recall a team that is this scary good on the powerplay.  As of late, it feels like a foregone conclusion the puck is finding the top corner of the opposition's net.
