Not that I have much insight into Makars thought process but there was mention of (I think) his sister's husband was a player for UMass. I highly doubt any first rounders make their decisions on a single criteria, but perhaps that player was a bit of a mentor.

There was a big number thrown out for the amount needed to "save" the program, I recall 30 million. Was this number to restore the program with the over paid coach, international flavor, and expensive residence? If so, what is the number to play at Purpur, recruit within reason, and stay away from a prima donna coach?

In 2001 Sandelin would have been what 36? Seems like UMD AD had the foresight to let a young coach develop, did they roll the dice and win or see something? Jump over to B-Rad and he started as a head coach at what 51? seems like a very different approach to program management, and likely is necessary as I doubt any UND fans would have like the UMD route... but look at David Carle....
