Not sure I understand why they won't appeal if they think an appeal would have merit. It may be too close for the first round of playoffs, but there is a possibility of the SIOUX hosting in later rounds. Surely there is enough time to appeal and prevent everyone from being exposed to all the hostile and abusive images. There is also the possibility of hosting playoffs in other sports long before the trial starts in April. I can only surmise that the NC$$ cannot find any grounds to appeal the decision. For some reason I don't expect this case to go to trial next April if the NC$$ thinks they might lose. Something will happen that will keep it from going to court. I have no idea what this would be, maybe another Sioux tribe will say it is OK to use the name (one should be enough but it seems the NC$$ doesn't like that resolution). Maybe a second one will give the NC$$ an excuse to grant the exception and settle the court case...who knows what UND might turn up during the discovery process. A loss in court may also cause a few schools that gave in to the NC$$ edict a reason to backtrack and keep their name (e.g. Newberry). God forbid, maybe WM will put the feathers back. I really don't think the NC$$ believed anyone would take this to court once the big schools were given exceptions. As soon as FSU started talking lawsuit the NC$$ came up with the exception clause. In fact, other than UND almost every other school as capitulated. The only other remaining school that I could see filing a lawsuit is Illinois and they were given an exception for the nickname. I doubt they will sue the NC$$ over the Chief.

Let's look at each of the four regions and how the prior weeks regional rankings played out for the 1/2 seeds: Northeast: 1. Shepherd defeated unranked West Virginia State Received #1 seed. 2. Bloomsburg defeated unranked Cheyney Received #2 seed. Southwest: 1. Northwest Missouri defeated unranked Southwest Babtist Received #1 seed. 2. Chadron State defeated unranked Adams State Received #2 seed. Southeast: 1. Newberry lost to #9 Presbyterian Received #3 seed 2. North Alabama defeated unranked West Alabama Received #2 seed 3. NC Central defeated #4 Elizabeth City Received #1 seed Northwest: 1. Grand Valley defeated unranked Northern Michigan Received #1 seed 2. North Dakota SIOUX defeated #3 South Dakota Received #3 seed 3. South Dakota lost to #2 North Dakota Received #5 seed 4. UNO defeated #12 Central Washington Received #2 seed. So, in every region except for the SIOUX, if a #1 or #2 seed won they received a bye. The only top 2 ranked team to lose was Newberry which was then dropped to the #3 seed. With Newberry losing, NC Central (at #3) leapfrogged the #2 seed North Alabama, who also won. North Alabama beat an unranked team while NC Central beat the #4 seed. This seamed to be enough to put them ahead of North Alabama. The reverse happened to the SIOUX. The SIOUX beat the #3 seed and get DROPPED from #2 to #3. There is absolutely no integrity in this process. No one can convince me that the seeding for the SIOUX was not a direct result of the lawsuit and the injunction. The NC$$ is a corrupt, monopolistic organization and I wish nothing but the worst for Brand and co. I hope the judge is paying attention as this seems to be a willful act of defiance and thumbing their nose at the court (i.e, if we can't deny them homefield we will do everything in our power to limit the possibility of a home game and screw them as much as possible). It would have been too blatent, even for the NC$$ to give the SIOUX a #5 or #6 seed to totally deny all home games.

Newberry College Reaches Agreement with NCAA

Why did we go for two ? Extra point makes SD have to get 2 TD's to win. Now a FG and TD with 2-pt conv. ties it.

Looks like this game is on FSSN and is also going to be webcast. The weekly press release had this blurb: "Video webcast will be available for the Oct. 28 and Nov. 11 home games for a nominal fee." Was the Oct. 28 game (Duluth) webcast ? If so, did they charge for it ?

Newberry is currently ranked #1 in the Southeast region. Since they have not filed any lawsuit they will be on the road for all playoff games. So if UND were to somehow move up to the #1 seed after this w/e and did not get an injuction we would have two of the four #1 seeds having to go on the road. Makes a joke out of the entire playoff system.

All things considered, 1st career starts, on the road, I would grade Grieco a "B" for the w/e. Other than one soft goal on Friday I thought he did a decent job although I would have liked to see him stop at least one of the breakaways. My concern is more with taking stupid penalties and the penalty kill. Seems like we always take one or two really dumb slashing penalties in every game. Mankato was 5/15 on the powerplay with one shorthanded goal. That's 6 of the 9 goals on special teams, hard to fault a goalie just making his first starts when that happens. Obviously this can't continue or we won't even finish in the top half of the WCHA. I have faith that Hakstol and company will get this fixed, hopefully soon. It also seems to me that the team is not playing quite as physical as in the past. I just don't see them finishing checks. I think we are missing Smaby and his open ice hits quite a bit and are looking for someone to fill that void. As far as Walski goes, barring injury to Grieco or a prolonged injury situation with Lammy, I would highly doubt we will see him play. Can't realistically rotate three goalies, so it's best to give Grieco as much playing time as possible assuming Lammy is out 2-3 weeks (have no idea). He's probably being thrown into the fire a bit quicker than the coaches would like but I suspect it will all work out fine.

The logic of this statement completely escapes me. Is there any group that is completely for or against anything ? Is he implying that if one, and only one, person objects to the use of the name it should be changed ? Good luck in the future and I do respect you for standing up for what you believe...I don't agree with you but I can respect your position. I have yet to see anything that relates to a hostile environment due to the nickname. I lived in GF for 21 years, went to school there and return often for hockey. Now, how do we get some of the faculty to follow his lead.
-
According to Schlossman's blog, Lamoureux has an unspecified injury and probably won't be going to Mankato. Time for one of the untested goalies to step up big. Also, Toews is doubtful. Forney is good to go. Hopefully the coaches show will give us some more info.
-
It could be that he had multiple injuries. I am fairly certain the injury that is keeping him out is to the shoulder.
-
So, anyone know what will happen to the lawsuit if Stenehjem is not re-elected ? Would the new attorney general have to or be inclined to pursue the case ?
-
Boo hoo. There are lots of places he could have gone if he wanted to be assured of playing time. Who are they upset with ? Must be their own kid for picking a school where he couldn't beat out the other goalie. There is no possible argument that can be made for Lammy playing over Parise the past two years. Are they upset with the coaches for not benching Parise ? Makes no sense. If that is the parents attitude and feelings then I am happy that Mario is going elsewhere. Best of luck to him.

After a few days to think about it, I am still sticking with my earlier statement that the coaches blew it by wimping out on 4th and goal. The score was tied 14-14 at the half. UND takes the 2nd half kickoff and marches down the field, 13 plays 73 yards and now has 4th and goal from inside the one. If the defense had been dominate and was stopping UNO all game I might agree that a FG would be OK. The fact was that UNO was able to run the ball quite successfully and every indication at that point says that UNO will not be shut out in the 2nd half. By wimping out and settling for a FG, this had to be a letdown for the Sioux and a shot in the arm for UNO. UND had a 1st and goal from the five and ran three running plays (all with Brady) to get to inside the one. You have to be able to score a TD in this instance and if you can't or won't try then you deserve to lose. There are times to be conservative and times where you need to make a statement (not only to the other team but also to yourself). IMO, this was the play of the game and a situation where a statement needed to be made.
-
This loss is totally on the coaching staff. They wimped out on 4th and goal and kicked a field goal when they needed to make a statement.

Iowa State rallies to win 28-27 over UNI. Scored with a little over a min to go. UNI misses a 51 yard FG with 6 secs left.
-
UNI 21 Iowa State 7 at the half.
-
Cnn someone explain to me why the Sioux did not use a timeout after Augie's 2nd down run with just over 2 min left ? They have all 3 TO's. Stupid decision making IMO.

Toews Gets no Love in the CHN Pre-season Rankings.
rochsioux replied to Goon's topic in Men's Hockey
IMO, there are too many variables to try to pick the top two goalies based on stats. The WCHA was the better conference and had much more scoring talent than Hockey East. The WCHA teams averaged 3.00 goals/game vs 2.70 for HE. If you look at the conference stats for Schneider vs. the top 4 WCHA goalies (based on GAA) and adjust for league avg: GAA SvPct LGAA Diff Elliott 1.84 .930 2.94 -1.10 Goepfert 2.09 .926 3.02 -0.93 Briggs 2.19 .918 2.91 -0.72 Schneider 1.96 .932 2.65 -0.69 Parise 2.41 .924 2.92 -0.51 LGAA = League GAA without players team numbers included So based on stats the case could be made that Briggs is a better goalie than Schneider. Not sure any reasonable person would make that case but that is the problem with looking at stats. There are different leagues involved, and even within the WCHA teams play an unbalanced schedule. Individual teams play different styles and defensive experience and talent vary. I can only base my opinion on games I have seen which are heavily skewed to games involving the Sioux. I thought Parise had one of the best seasons in goal of any Sioux goalie since I have followed them (35+ years) especially given the defense was very inexperienced. Elliott had a great season for Wisconsin and deserved all the awards he received. He did have the advantage of playing with an experienced veteran team. Goepfert was also very good and the case could be made for him to be the 2nd team all-american. He is a goalie I feel could steal a game for the team that they shouldn't win. Briggs started the season on a roll but had a falloff the second half. He has not yet impressed me as a goalie that can steal a game. Schneider is the one I have seen the least and only against UND except for the Wisc championship game. Against UND: 10/24/2004: 3 goals on 19 shots 03/26/2005: 6 goals on 21 shots 04/06/2006: 5 goals on 41 shots total: 14 goals on 81 shots Bottom line is I haven't been impressed with him at all. Granted the sample size is very small and if you only looked at a few games of any goalie you may get a distorted view. But I think his play against the Sioux is why many posters on this board find it difficult to place him on the second team. We've seen goalies for other teams in the WCHA steal games against the Sioux and Schneider has basically been a sieve against the Sioux. That and the fact he plays in what most view, myself included, as an inferior league. -
The writer of the letter "might want to think twice" about whether they want to work for a university that "refuses to commit to equality for all races". My suggestion to them is that they send in their resignation in protest. Then I might have some respect for them. They are suggesting to recruits that they should not come to a university where they happen to work ? Sounds pretty hypocritical to me. Do as I say not as I do.

FWIW, the Howard Johnsons hotel next to the Kohl Center is now a Doubletree Hotel. Since it is a football w/e they have the room prices jacked up an extra $100 or so per night to $239.

2003-2004 season BC came to REA for 2. 2004-2005 season UND traveled to Boston and played BC and Northeastern once. 2005-2006 season Northeastern came to REA for 2. So the Sioux played BC twice and Northeastern twice at REA while only playing them once each on the road. I am guessing they owe them another trip to Boston.

NDH, recovery going well, a few more weeks and I should be back running and biking. Thanks for asking. Kinda sucks without a home series with MN but at least we get four with Wisconsin. I always like going to Madison for the series and they will play there the next three years.
