I've made mention of the western glut of Hobey winners in recent years, PCM, but people still think somehow it's a Hockey East conspiracy against the Sioux. That being said, I disagree with your comment about Ryan Miller having an "amazing" season. Granted, his statistics were eye-popping and I am sure he had plenty of good games, but having personally seen a game in East Lansing that year and hearing some of the fans comment about him, I would concur with fans here that Jeff Panzer was robbed. Michigan State was a very defensive oriented team that year and as soon as the score was 1-0 or 2-0, some good old fashioned clutch-and-grab and three-men-back hockey was the norm at Munn Ice Arena. The game I attended was the UMass game and the Minutemen mustered up all of about 8 shots on goal until about 40 seconds left in the game when Miller misplayed a dump-in and got a puck stuffed into an empty net. He was immediately waved over to the bench and pulled by Ron Mason. I laughed at this and a fan in front of me says "happens all the time when we're ahead...they're protecting his GAA." Sorry to disagree with my favorite pseudo-reporter, but Panzer WAS robbed.

The mock trial was pretty interesting. If memory serves me right, something like 8-10 of the 12 "jurors" would let him into the Hall of Fame and all 12 of them believed that he did bet on baseball.

I, too, was a fan of Pete Rose, "Charlie Hustle," breaking Ty Cobb's hit record, and everything else about Pete. The problem is that Pete Rose knew the cardinal sin of baseball was betting on baseball and not only did he ignore it, he then lied about it for years before quietly admitting his sin. Love him or hate him, he does inspire feelings on both sides of the issue. Did you happen to watch ESPN's "Pete Rose Mock Trial" a few years ago where attorneys lobbied on behalf of Pete and against Pete and a jury decided his fate? Good stuff.

Wasn't trying to be overly critical as I'm certainly no fan of Jeremy Schaap either, but it's important to have the facts straight when taking a shot at someone, lest you lose credibility yourself. I do remember the Pete Rose incident w/Jim Gray and while I detest Rose for betting on baseball and then lying about it, Jim Gray trying to wrestle a confession out of Pete left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Of course, Pete did fess up later and is now paying the price for years of lying about it when he actually did bet on baseball. Had I been in Fenway Park that night, I'd have booed him, not cheered him.

Aaaahhh...one of my favorite memories of McVey Hall in the spring of 1989. About one hundred residents of the dorm watching the Harvard/Minnesota game on the big-screen in the dorm lounge, most of them kids from Bloomington and Edina. Harvard scores in OT to win the game and while 98 others are crying, I jump up screaming and hug my buddy (also an ardent Gopher hater). One of the UND football player (from Burnsville - major Gopher hockey fan) tosses a gigantic slushie at the TV and the head resident promptly invites him into his office for a discussion. Good times...

Doing good, AZSioux. Been busy with work and my now four year old, but have been out to watch a couple of games at Joe Senser's and the St Cloud series. The WCHA Final Five isn't that far off either.

UND started wearing the NORTH DAKOTA jerseys in the 1993 season after the new owners of the Chicago Blackhawks decided to charge UND for using the logo. I believe that style of jersey was worn until the 1996 season when the geometric Indian head was used. The 1997 and 2000 title teams both wore the geometric version (as did the 2001 runner-up team).

Duluth is two hours north of Minneapolis/St Paul. Houghton is about 3-4 more hours and a time zone change north and east of that. Throw in about 15 feet of snow (ok, a slight embellishment) and it's not exactly an easy drive in the winter. That being said, it is a great road trip. Sorry, ftnsiouxhockey, as much as I want to...

The issue of Carthage College is particularly humorous. Sports Illustrated even pointed this out in their NCAA basketball issue a few weeks ago under the "This Week's Sign of the Apocalypse" heading. Carthage College has changed their name from the Redmen to the Red Men (I am kidding you not) to disassociate itself from Native American imagery.

How much for tickets and hotel only? I'm tempted, but unless Al is heading to Duluth from Grand Forks via way of Minneapolis, I probably would just drive up myself.
