what you fargo fantasy footballers don't realize that actually PLAYING a FBS schedule versus a FCS schedule doesn't compare or compute ....it just doesn't work. It's no different that Ferris State doing the same thing to FCS or Mary Hardin Baylor saying the same thing about d2.

    2 things.

Why not engage with the questions I posed?

Again, if ndsu moved to FBS, by definition they’d now be an FBS team with FBS scholarships and FBS depth. So yeah, as it sits, ndsu as an FCS team would struggle with a full FBS schedule, but the parameters would be obviously different if ndsu had FBS depth. Which they would if they moved up.

And again, if the playoff would expand to 12 teams, this would have been a year when NDSU would have been in the mix for a playoff spot. To play Georgia. Or Alabama. Or Michigan. Or keep playing Western Illinois, whatever.

    tell that to dominque

His comments are certainly premature and overzealous and I don’t agree with him about this years ndsu team.

But look at it this way, on NDSUs best years, where do you think they would rank among only G5 teams?  I think they would have been near the top of G5 teams in 2013 and maybe a few other years in this 10 year run. If that’s true, and maybe you disagree with that, are you saying that in a 12 team playoff a G5 team or two wouldn’t find their way into the tournament?

Yeah recruiting elite talent to Fargo is going to be easy……. NDSU already has G5 level facilities but are they going to be enough to beat out P5 facilities and programs? Some of the local talent will still cut it at a G5 NDSU but they will have to rely on out of the region talent to fill their roster especially if they want elite P5 talent.

You seem to be under the illusion that every FBS team is Georgia, Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State.

Every year there are anywhere from 2-6 teams that are so far above everyone else that nobody, even at the FBS level can touch them. The rest of FBS is filled with 3 star recruits with 4 stars occasionally and extremely rare 5 star guys.

NDSU will almost certainly never be in that elite 2-6 teams. I have no illusion of that. They play a different game, they are the NFL minor league. Everyone else on any given year is beatable and I think over the course of many years NDSU could find itself competing with them if they were to move up.

Yeah those egos are not getting any smaller…….. NDSU has proven they can recruit G5 talent but recruiting P5 talent is unproven. How will NDSU win recruiting battles against Minnesota and Wisconsin once they are FBS? ???

You are overlooking a key point. In this hypothetical recruiting situation, NDSU would no longer be FCS, they’d be G5 FBS. G5 teams win recruiting battles against P5 teams hundreds of times a year. Playing time, culture, connection with the coaching staff…etc.

there is literally nothing visionary about ndac....

they should hang their hat on wrasslin'

there are 4  major sports (baseball, football, basketball, and hockey)  in american and ndac has no shot at any given year of winning a title at the highest level of those....UND-1

There are 3 major sports to everyone outside of Grand Forks.

    Not controversial, more reality

    you want all sports, correct?

What conference was UND in 20 years ago? How many conferences has UND been affiliated with in the last 20 years. Would you have predicted that path in the year 2000?

The MAC and the Big 10 are the only two footprints that make sense. Big 10 will never happen obviously for a million reasons. MAC has 16 teams already so that ain’t happening either.

The MAC has 16 teams in January 2021. Things can change.

The AAC has been a revolving door and is adding 6 teams in two years. Not saying that the footprint is a fit, just noting the ever changing landscape of the conference.

Why is this so controversial to some here? Conference affiliations change constantly especially at the G5 level.

And Cincinnati, Houston and UCF are joining the Big 12.

Yeah my opinion is reality, yours is asinine! D2 to FCS moves are relatively easy . FCS to G5 also wouldn’t be that hard for NDSU. We are talking magnitudes more difficult to go P5. Be my guest and embarrass yourself in the football community with those aspirations!

Lol, yes, my god the embarrassment that I’ll endure.

I’m not talking G5. P5 is a pipe dream that won’t happen in this lifetime.

look at Montana and Montana State. Montana is the bigger football school with much more national notoriety, but their school is in decline, dropping enrollment. Then look at Montana St, booming university. enrollment is exploding and the academics is following. Which school is more primed for FBS? Montana St.! They may even be better positioned to go FBS than NDSU. These are just the hurdles to get to the G5, P5 is not reality.

That’s your opinion and you’re welcome to it.

The landscape is ever shifting, reality today won’t be reality tomorrow and vice versa. To speak in such absolutes I believe is foolish in most everything in life.

These are the exact same conversation I had 20 years ago with NDSU’s move to DI.

    We’ll see what happens.

It’s just hard to look at geography and see a clear path. In my mind it would’ve already happened.

I agree, the path isn’t clear. But if the ambition is there from leadership and alumni, a path will present itself.

If NDSU isn’t desirable right now for an invite what will it take? Bigger TV market? How about better academics, research  and bigger enrollment.

P5 is about more than TV markets and a good football team. You need to have a top tier University in order to ever be considered for a P5 conference. I’m 20 years NDSU will be just as far away from the P5 as it is now! Who knows if they will even get a G5 invite in 20 years!

Everything you listed has improved at NDSU in the past 20 years, as an optimist I choose to believe that trajectory will continue. Time will tell I suppose.

Of course we are all speculating here. You choose to see a future that isn’t as favorable for your rival school, I choose to see a future where we move ever closer to the potential NDSU and the Fargo market has/will have.

There’s no right or wrong here. Is it unlikely, sure. But, again, many on this board and around the state mocked and ridiculed NDSU for ever dreaming they would have the success they’ve already had at the DI level. Guess we’ll just have to see how it plays out.

disagree with? that ndac is desireable to any current fbs conference out there.....bc...................................................location.

Disagree that Fargo is growing and will continue to grow based on all projections making Fargo a more desirable TV market in the future than it currently is.

  13. 50 minutes ago, SIOUXFAN97 said:

and no other market anywhere south of nodak hasn't grown too ....at a faster rate....with more sun...and law schools and business schools....and nicer stadiums.....and more alumni...with more money....

We are specifically talking about NDSU here. If you'd like to talk about a different FCS team and the potential they have to move up to FBS feel free to bring up a specific team. Absent another team to discuss, I brought up the assets NDSU has in regards to a move up.

Objectively, the fargo area is booming with growth, others have said as much on this thread. Which part of that do you disagree with?

  14. 2 hours ago, SIOUXFAN97 said:

25 years ago Grand Forks, Fargo, Brookings, and Vermillion were where they were and in another 20 years they will still be where they are....Geography doesn't change with time....

Thank you for that valuable input.

Markets do change however. Population growth in Fargo could make it a much more attractive TV market in 20 years.

  15. 19 minutes ago, Sioux>Bison said:

P5 isn’t happening. 9 FCS championships barely raised enrollment. NDSU going P5 one day is a Pipe Dream! NDSU is not Cincinnati, Houston or UCF!!!!!

but be my guest and lose credibility!

You lack an understanding of how time can change things. The landscape today will look nothing like what it will look like in 20 years.

In my opinion I think FBS should go to an 8 team playoff.  There have been a couple of years there was quite a bit of debate about one or two teams that did not get in the top 4 and probably should have had a shot.  The 8th seed is very unlikely to win but if a 5th seed plays a 4th seed I'd say that is almost 50/50 in most years as to who would win.  If they were to go to 12 teams, I think they'd have to give the top 4 a buy so that there would be 8 teams in second round.  I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to something like that, would make for some good first round games.  I could see a #12 upsetting a #5 in the first round in that scenario.

I wouldn't want it to get too watered down, but the nice thing about FCS and bigger playoff field is that it makes things a lot more interesting for a lot more teams right up until the final week of the season.

The interest in an 8-12 team tournament would be so high. I would absolutely love to see an AAC/MAC/MW champion line up against a 2nd or 3rd best team from a P5 in that first round.

The points are: Dom Izzo is getting clicks in the off-season with an intentionally delusional take that gets NDSU rubes hard and makes everyone else facepalm. NDSU is geographically isolated and doesn’t appear to have a legit FBS option.

I don’t disagree with any of that.

I love upsets. I follow Minnesota profesional sports and UND football. Every win that "my teams" get is considered an upset. I am simply being realistic. The NCAA is a business driven by money. If the figures don't match up, we will never get an expanded playoffs. If they can make more money by expanding, then they will expand until they can't anymore.

I think what upsets UND fans the most (besides NDSU's success because its a rivalry and no one wants their rival to succeed) Is the unrealistic fans that think if NDSU transitions it will be smooth and butter and they will continue their dominance. I'm not even going bring up the "We want Bama" crowd.

    9 minutes ago, geaux_sioux said:

Yea, any given Saturday Bama and Georgia from this year would beat those three teams by 40. I’m assuming you watched that game. Those two teams were playing on a different level than all other college teams.

I’m a realistic guy too and I would fully expect Georgia and Alabama to dominate most every team in the country this year. Would they? You’d have to play the game.

If I had money on it of course I’m picking those two teams all day. But that’s not the point. The point is, upsets happen, they are called upsets because you don’t expect them to happen. Anybody can beat anybody, that’s why the game is played.

  19. 30 minutes ago, FlinFlan80 said:

Ya ya ya "Any given Saturday..." Yadayadayada.........

If FBS playoffs go to 8 teams or 12 teams it is simply because they will make out better financially. Everyone was excited when it went to 4, well the semi final games have all been complete snoozers. If they expand and use an auto bid format it will be even worse. I'm not against them expanding, but simply take the best 12 teams in the nation. If that means 4 SEC teams and 4 B10 teams, well if they are the best they are the best.

Also, Utah isn't in the same category as Houston or Boise St. They are a P5 team.

I'm just waiting for the P5 conferences to give the middle finger to the NCAA and break off.

The group of 5 conferences are just FCS schools with an FBS title. The MAC and the MVFC are pretty similar.

    Ya da ya da yada?

Why even watch sports if there isn’t drama and surprises, the whole point of watching is you don’t know how things will play out isn’t it? I’m amazed at how cynical some here are about the possibility of upsets. For me they are the main thing that makes sports worth watching. If we knew for sure who would win a game before it starts, that would be a pretty boring game.

How many of these were playoff games. That is what my point is about. You don’t catch teams sleeping in the FBS playoffs. You got a list of FBS playoff upsets? I’d love to see it.

They’ve never had the opportunity either. Can’t happen under the current structure.

On paper, Georgia and Alabama would dominate Houston or Utah or Boise St. But any given Saturday as they say.

So when is NDSU going to magically raise their enrollment to 30k, 40k, 50k? Or even to 20k? Are more students going to be clamoring to get to good ole Fargo once you tack on hundreds of dollars in student fees? NDSU isn’t a private university so they need to have a respectable enrollment like the rest of the P5 land grant schools. At this point the P5 is just as much a possibility for UND as it is for NDSU……… 0.00001% chance! Research, Academics, Enrollment, Athletics all need to drastically improve to ever become a P5 school.

NDSU can’t even get a G5 invite so let’s start there before even considering a potential P5 move!

These exact conversation were had as NDSU transitioned to DI if you’re old enough to remember. See my post above, G5 first then P5 is the scenario I laid out. So I agree with you. The landscape is ever changing, a lot can happen over the course of a couple of decades.
