Flashback to early September 2001. I'm at a local restaurant having dinner with my niece and her boyfriend, both of whom are UND students. Also at dinner are three recent graduates of the University of Minnesota-Duluth. One of the former UMD students asked my niece if she was excited about going to hockey games in the new Engelstad Arena.
She and her boyfriend turned up their noses at the idea. There's no way they'd they pay to see a game in the new arena. They should get in for free because "Ralph Engelstad doesn't need the money."
The reply was classic.
"Let me get this straight. They're making you pay $5 a game to watch hockey in the best arena in the country that's right on your campus? And get to watch one of the best teams in the nation play? And you get to sit in the best seats in the house? Gee, I feel soooooo sorry for you."
Most students at other hockey schools are green with envy of what UND students have.
