  1. That's a goal they're trying to meet.
  2. A legal team is still working to formulate a strategy. UND is receiving a great deal of legal advice from outside the state. Nothing has been filed in court yet.
  3. From Bloomberg.com: American Indians Oppose Trademark for Washington's `Redskins' See what Smithsonian Institution senior linguist Ives Goddard said about the origins of "redskin" in this Washington Post article. See what Americans Indians think of the term based on this poll by the Annenburg Public Policy Center.
  4. On other boards maybe, but certainly not here.
  5. I said Diggler, not Digger. But maybe Diggler has mastered the art of scoring a TD from the stands. How many have heard the NDSU radio ads with Craig Bohl? My favorite part is when he talks about the fans' impact on the football team and then you hear this lone fan utter a pathetic "Go Bison!" For some reason, I can imagine the ad's producer saying: "We struggled with capturing the unbridled enthusiasm of Bison fans, but not being loud and exciting."
  6. The Siskel Kid?
  7. I'm too young to remember them.
  8. I remember "Poncho & Lefty," but not "Cisco & Poncho." Are you sure that you weren't thinking of these guys?
  9. One more example. The British routinely call Americans "yanks," a term derived from the Revolutionary War song "Yankee Doodle Dandy." Many other people around the world have adopted the term "yanks" or "Yankees" to refer to Americans -- sometimes in a deragatory sense and sometimes in an informal slang sense. Today, very few Americans that I know of resent being called "yanks" or "Yankees." Yet, as this article reveals, the term was intended to be an insult to backwards American colonials.

    Tailgating

What about the sardines and crackers?
  11. The English called the French "frogs" because the French considered frog legs a gourmet delicacy. The French called the English "limeys" because the British navy fed its sailors limes to ward off scurvy. The French, English and Americans called Germans "krauts" because of their fondness for sauerkraut. It isn't the same as giving a group of people a derogatory nickname based on their race or regligion. To use a more up-to-date analogy, it's like Sioux fans calling Gopher fans "goofers" or "rodents." And it's like Gopher fans calling Sioux fans "suzies." Is such namecalling childish, immature and juvenile? Yes it is. Does it rise to the level of hate speech? I think not. Sticks and stones...
  12. I get your point. While I'm sure being called a "frog" is insulting to some French-speaking people, it's been so widely used for so long that I wouldn't consider it in the same league as the "n" word or some other racial epithets. The term was invented by one group of white Europeans to refer to another group of white Europeans. Therefore, I don't think the racial animosity angle really applies. I was surprised that a basketball team owner with a French name would consider naming his team the Jumping Frogs in a predominantly French-Canadian city and not expect a negative reaction to it. I don't really care what they call their basketball team, as long as it's not something I find offensive, such as the Fighting Irish or the Vikings.
  13. I don't see Diggler featured anywhere in the ad. That's why I think it sucks.
  14. And now for something completely different. Quebec owner defends use of a frog in his basketball team's new logo
  15. As has been stated, Iowa has a policy against scheduling games with schools that have American Indian nicknames. So it's not surprising that they declined to play UND. I'm amazed that they'd even consider it.
  16. Well, there's also INCH.
  17. They've done it before. They'll do it again.
  18. To my knowledge, that's never happened. Probably the closest thing to that was when an American Indian organization at St. Cloud State requested that UND's hockey team not wear its Sioux jerseys while playing at SCSU. As I recall, UND's AD said the request would be considered if it came officially from SCSU's administration, but such a request was never made.
  19. Why would anyone send you a toilet seat?

  22. That's just what I was thinking!
  23. So don't play any games at South Carolina's capitol building. Problem solved.
