  1. This was my first trip to Madison to watch the Sioux take on the Badgers. My friends and I heard that Madison was a great town to have fun. Last year we traveled to Houghton, MI to watch the Sioux and we had a blast, but this year in Madison it was totally different. When we got to the Kohl Center one of the Badger's fans asked us not to yell Sioux at the end of the National Anthem. He told us that we were being disrespectful to the United States and that North Dakota was a bunch of communist. The guy was just trying to get under our skin, but we didn't let him so he looked like a stupid Badger fan. After the Sioux victory we went to States Street to celebrate. State Street looked like a lot of fun with all the bars and people, but it wasn't we heard a lot of Badger fans yelling F*ck the Sioux. We went to a couple of bars and we didnt feel very welcomed compared to the other cities in the WCHA while wearing our Sioux jerseys. I actually got punched in the face because we wouldn't buy a guy a shot. He kept on taking our Sioux hats and throwing it on the floor telling us that we needed to buy him a shot. I dont think I will be going back to Madison for some time. Like my friend said there were 30% nice Badger fans and 70% disrespectful Badger fans. And the best line that they can come up with is " Sioux is a girls name" Let me give the student section and band credit. It was very cool to see them all involved with all the different songs they did. It looked like they were having a lot of fun. I am just wondering if anyone else had the same kind of experience my friends and I did.

    Go Sioux!!!

Thats unfortunate that you had a bad experience there. I was down there with some of my friends and we had a blast. I actually enjoy people coming up and yelling F the Sioux. Normally after you respond back you actually end up in a decent convo with them. But it sounds like you had a real tool in the bar with you. Madison is a strange town. They really don't know hockey at all, but once they know the score of the game half of them hate you and half love for some reason. All in all I've always found it to be a pretty cool place to visit and I can't wait to go back next year.

  2. Actually, I am not too sure why you guys are pushing Muss so hard for it. He has not been horribly impressive either.

Its only a selct few who are pushing for him. Some of us feel that awards should be based on merit. And he has done nothing so far in his career to warrant discussion for coach of the year. I know some are only doing it because they see it as a possible recruiting tool (which I find laughable) but how about we dont cheapen it so if Muss does win it some day, it will actaully be deserved.

  3. I meant that Tech and Anchorage would fill the place in the CCHA if a Big Ten conference was formed. I want things to stay as they are now, but if it happens, I wouldn't mind seeing an 8 team WCHA with the flexibility to schedule more non-conference games.

Flexibility will be key if the BTHC ever comes to fruition. There was already a very limited number of non conference games in a WCHA of 10 teams. Going back to that and trying to still play UW and UM each year will make it very hard to play some quality East Coast programs. While it ideally would be nice to drop down to 8, who would leave? UAF and UAA will never be in the same conference. Tech might be willing to leave but we still would need to cut someone else adrift. Thats why its not such a crazy idea to start a seperate conference with Miami and Notre Dame. It would leave us with the openings to schedule East Coast progams, UW and UM, as well the other Minnesota schools. The same openings would apply to the new Minnesota based conference. I'm sure we would still play many of the Minnesota teams every year. It wouldn't be like we are abandoning them as some would suggest. And they would also have the flexibility to schedule teams they may have not gotten an opportunity to play in the past. Combined with the increased spots in conferences for new schools who want to start hockey, the BTHC wouldnt be the worst thing to happen, but only if UND and other teams don't settle for being a part of a second tier league.

  4. that too, but we seem to be playing better as a team and as players....how we play as a team is not about who we play but how we coordinate together.

And its a lot easier to coordinate when you arent up against the level of size, speed, skills, etc. as the previous opponents. Granted I do agree that they look better today. But alot of that is likely attributed to the opponent. My biggest hope is they take the confidence and reps from this game and use that to improve against FCS competition.

  5. Instead of a BTHC why not Penn St join the CCHA and have Alaska Fairbanks or Alaska whatever they call themselves join the WCHA and be rivals with UAA.

Um there already is a spot for them in the CCHA. Why would UAF go to the WCHA and make 13 teams? That wouldn't solve the issue of Minnesota and UW still playing in the WCHA.

  6. Everyone is upset about the idea of Minnesota and Wisconsin ditching the rest of the WCHA for the Big Ten hockey conference, but no one seems to mind us doing the same thing essentially by forming a new conference with DU, CC, the other ND, and Miami (and others). Why would we get a pass for ditching the little guys when that's exactly what we're mad about with the Big Ten schools?

I for one am not mad about it. It's a business decision for the Big Ten schools. And if they decide to leave, UND should not feel the need to stay in the WCHA as well. It has to be about business for us as well.

  7. It's been a while since I saw a kickoff go in the endzone.

Yeah Hellevang was a decent kicker and showed he had a leg at times (ex Texas Tech) but for some reason he never really was great on kickoffs.

  8. The home South Dakota game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 15 but it now shows on the schedule as Sunday, Jan. 16 at 1:00 and 3:00. This just happens to be the same weekend that the hockey team has the Gophers at home.

Should we take this as a sign that they are planning another Meltdown at the Ralph?

I guess its possible but I think its much more likely that they didn't want to host both events on the same day. Any other hockey opponent (with maybe the exception of Denver), they probably go ahead and host on the same day. But the Minnesota series probably needs the full attention of the staff. Not to mention that the USD games should be some of the most highly attended basketball games. Putting them on the same day as the Gophers could take a sizeable chunk of people away from the games.

  9. If it is a Nickelback song they are coming out to, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Burn it To the Ground. Although the lyrics aren't the greatest for a family atmosphere, it is one of their more uptempo songs. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

  10. What exactly would most of you have had the UND administration do differently? We sued the NCAA and the judge told us to settle. Should we have wasted another million dollars to go to trial and lose? When a judge tells you to settle it's a pretty good sign that you don't have a very good case.

Is it all really about the dropping the nickname a few months early? Would it really have made any difference if we waited until the the deadline in the settlment agreement? Should Kelley have made fire and brimstone speeches in support of the nickname and then sat on his ass like Kupchella? Is that what qualifies as standing up for the nickname in your eyes?

How much expense should our athletic program and university have incurred to keep the nickname? $2 million? 10 million? 100 million? Is the nickname the only thing worth preserving in the entire university?

A lot of you nickname supporters need to sit down and truly evaluate what UND could have done differently.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The masses are so willing to throw Kelley under the bus but yet turn a blind eye to Kupchella, who put on a pretty good show but in the end it was his hesitation and inaction that allowed us to be backed into the corner we currently find ourselves in.

  11. This is how we are going to end up with some really stupid replacement name because of apathy.

Its not apathy. I'd do almost anything to keep the name, be it traveling to Indy to stage a protest or contributing to the tribes in exchange for letting us use the name. The one thing I won't do, however, is allow this great university to be weakened waiting around for a pipe dream to come true. As much as we want it to, Standing Rock is not going to help us out. The tribes have been given a chance to change the status quo. Standing Rock has choosen not to. Whether thats the true will of the people is up for debate. But as we have seen with our current United States government, the true will of the people is not always the will that wins out. Its an unfortunate reality of life and the sooner we can get past this, the stronger this university will become.

  12. So your position is that they should have gone down with the ship supporting the name. They should have supported it to the bitter end no matter the odds. They should have risked their jobs to support the Fighting Sioux nickname no matter what the eventual outcome was going to be. Does that sum up your position? Is that what you mean by principles?

I can assure you that not all North Dakota natives or even all UND alums would have followed the path that you have supported (this is coming from someone whose family has been in North Dakota for well over 100 years, who has been a Fighting Sioux fan probably longer than you have been alive, an alum with many others alums in the family, and someone that really hates losing the nickname and logo). There comes a time when you cut your losses and move on. No matter what you and many others think, the nickname is a small part of the entire University of North Dakota or even of the UND Athletic Department. It is a great nickname, one of the best I have ever heard. And the logo is wonderful. But they aren't worth what you are asking for from Mr. Faison or Mr. Kelley. Risking everything to support the nickname when the odds are so great against it would have been foolhardy for the administration and for the University. And I know that you don't agree with me so you don't have to tell me that you think I'm wrong.

Right on. At some point in time it becomes a numbers game. And thats why its a good thing they turned to someone with no previous connection to the university. As Goon and others show, its hard for some poeple to play the numbers game when they have an emotional attachment.

  13. Do you really think that the NCAA can't ban one of its member schools from post season games? Come on now...you are lying to yourself and you're not convincing anyone.

And even if, somehow, the current rules wouldn't allow them...they can just make new rules that do allow them.

    This isn't hard.

And if UND doesn't like it? Then leave the voluntary association.

Then why wouldn't they have banned them to start with? I don't remember the details but the NCAA is definitely limited as to what they can do under current rules. Now yes, I suppose your right that they could make new rules. However, I believe that they would have to go through the general assembly and not a committee as the nickname issue went through. And what reason does the general assembly have to vote in favor of a nickname ban or postseason sanctions against UND?

  14. Of course the NCAA has the right to place sanctions on UND, limiting their post season options, if UND is going to play their games at (privately owned and operated) facilities that have no respect for the NCAA and their rules.

I really don't think they do. Otherwise they would have came out and banned UND from postseaosn play until the name was retired. However, they can't do that. All they had the authority to do was to not allow UND to host and not allow them to wear uniforms with the logo or name in postseason play. They couldn't tell UND what to do during the season nor will they be able to ban them if they continue to play in the REA.

  15. Ralph donated the money for the arena under a whole different set of circumstances. He is no longer around to express his wishes. We have no idea what his wishes would have been if the circumstances surrounding the nickname were the same back then as they are now. He may have clung to his guns on this issue or he may have been more pragmatic given the harm keeping the nickname in the face of NCAA opposition would cause UND. No one can really know.

The administration at UND had to make a decision given the circumstances presented to them. Whether they were right or wrong is up for debate, but I would guess that they thought about a whole lot more than the perceived wishes of a deceased benefactor before making their decision.

UND will never challenge REA on the issue of the logos. All UND cares about is making sure their programs are not adversely affected by the NCAA ruling. By changing the name and dropping the logo, they will meet the criteria for that. They could care less that the hockey team will still play in an arena full of the old logo because the NCAA can't do a thing to UND over that. Now if down the road the NCAA changes things (such as hockey tourney 1st round games play on campus sites), then UND might take issue as that would affect the hockey program. But until then, UND will embrace REA's decision because it keeps the logo semi alive without any visible support from the university.

  16. Thank you for proving my point was correct! I said you don't have to be a huge market to host an NCAA MBB game and your numbers prove that to be true.

The NCAA awards 1st round host sites based on bids... not on the size of the city. GF is accessable by air from all over the country via Mpls and Chicago and is only 1 hr drive from Fargo. Plenty of hotel rooms between GF and Fargo. Not to mention that GF alone can support a sold out REA, as UND hockey statistics can attest to.

They also pick sites that will get the largest attendance. Its already been proven that in GF, basketball does not generate the excitement that other sports do. Couple that with the fact that the first round is always on the same weekend as the WCHA Final Five in St. Paul, do you honestly think anyone would give two cents about hosting the bball tourney? If the town and university don't embrace it, it would never work.

And btw, we hear from non conference teams how hard travel is to get to GF, with most flying into Minneapolis and some even to Winnipeg. But if you call that acceptable, I guess we will have to go with it. I just think the NCAA might have other ideas...

  17. I was about to comment the same thing.

I thought tourney sites were supposed to be neutral anyways?

Of course, UND and REA could vie to host the tourney if UND promises not to do well enough to make the tourney in the first place....

But that seems likely since MPLSBison just told us that we might as well drop the sport anyways. :)

Not sure about that. I know universities can host first and 2nd round games on their home courts (ex. Boise St.) but in the event of that team actually making the tourney as well, I'm sure they would get sent to a different site.

  18. It makes you laugh. Here you have the typical UND hockey fan: acknowledging that this so-called "sport" called 'basketball' has national tournaments at sites just like the REA and by implication you admit that hosting such a 1st round of the national tournament would be an unprecedented way for the state of ND, the city of GF and UND to show off their amazing facility, school, town and state to the nation.

Sorry fans of bball and especially UND bball....apparently you have no place at UND.

And what leads you to believe UND would ever be in position to be a host in the first round of the NCAA basketball tourney? Pigs have a better chance of flying than that does of occuring. So the logos won't be a problem after all.

  19. Probably won't get to a lot of games this year so the Madison trip is a must for me. I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't made it before. Went there when the Sioux clinched the cup a couple of years ago and that was a blast. Plus the badger fans are good ones to drink with after a game. A good time all around.
