  1. I would love to see that happen as it would open up the remaining WCHA (UAA, DU, CC, UND, SCSU, MSU, UMD, BSU, UNO) to a future NDSU and possibly Moorhead State hockey team(s). Maybe drop UAA to save money?

    NDSU - Moorhead

    DU - CC

    SCSU - MSU

    BSU - UND

    UNO - UMD (not ideal)

Im not going to adress this actual issue, but are you assuming Michigan Tech leaves as well? Otherwise that leaves you with 13 teams. And if your scenario would play out, the pairings would look like this:

    NDSU-Moorhead

    DU-CC

    SCSU-UND

    BSU-UMD

    UNO-MSU

  2. My bet is that gate revenues would trump any other considerations. For example, there is zero chance the Mankatos and St. Clouds of the world would turn down a home-and-home contract with the Gophers out of principle. Absolutely no chance of that happening. Heck, no way UND would turn it down.

Thats what I would be afraid off. But its short sighted. Sure they can take the gate from one home game, but they also will need to remember that they are going to be getting a decreased share of revenue from the Final Five. I would like to see them gamble and say No thanks. Sure they will miss out on a gate, but if the BTHC folds after a couple of years and UW and UM come back to the WCHA, those gates will return along with with increased Final Five revenue. Its a gamble and I don't think many teams would go for it, but it sure would be nice if they did.

  3. while I see your points, I spent 5 years at UND with the last year being the first where games didn't always start at 1pm. The student section was almost always close to full or full by 20 minutes to gametime. To use the "i wanted to sleep in excuse" is old and hello, the football team wanted to sleep in to, but they were there. The band is there, the cheerleaders and dance team are there. Which I know everyone knocks on the cheerleaders and dance team, but they are there before the football team some games.

I agree that the triple-headers can hurt football attendance, but the die-hards will always be there.

The fact that people are going to wait in line for the hockey games worries me and makes me wonder why on earth they scheduled the Gopher Series for during football season! That just seems like bad planning on the athletic departments half. But what do I know? There had to be a reason, right?

Well this is my 5th year and with the exception of the first (2005-2006), the student section really wasn't that consistent. They showed up for the big games, homecoming, UNO, etc. but then would drop off against lesser known opponents. I think its easier to make exceptions for bigger games. For example, my friends started partying for homecoming before 10, even though the game wasn't until 4. Last week, you were lucky if anyone was even out of bed before 10. Different weather, different opponent, very different atmosphere.

  4. That's a valid point to raise. I'm pretty sure the WCHA schedules conference games, but I wonder what kind of input a particular AD can have in requesting adjustments? I don't think anyone thinks it is ideal to have the Gophers in town the second weekend of the season. Having it on a football weekend makes it even worse. It may be that the Gopher game was scheduled before the Sioux Falls game was scheduled and that football scheduling is so difficult, this combo weekend couldn't be avoided.

It seems to me that when the USF game was first scheduled, it was for a Thurs night. Then it got moved to Sat afternoon. With FB games being hard to schedule this year, I am thinking they really were limited in trying to avoid hockey weekends. Which then makes me wonder why this game got moved from Thurs in the first place.

  5. With 10 WCHA teams we currently play 18 conference games and 8 non-conference games. In the Big Ten league if there were only 6 teams they would play 10 conference games and be looking for 18 non-conference games. So the idea of reginalization sounds good but unless Wisconsin plays all of the Michigan teams and Minnesota plays all of the Minnesota teams for non-conference games, regionalization is thrown out the window.

Good point. Even though it looks like the power is with the BT, this will negatively affect college hockey as a whole. Is it possible that if all of the other schools banded together and did not schedule non conference games against the BTHC teams, that they could force the demise of this dumb idea. Or would enough of the smaller teams cross over for the lure of higher gate revenues?

If a Big Ten hockey conference started up the WCHA would survive with 10 teams and the competition would be just as strong as it is now. The thing we'd all miss would be the rivalry we have generated with both schools.

I don't think that we can assume the WCHA would be at 10 teams. I think Michigan Tech might take a look at the new, weakened CCHA, and then take a look at the new WCHA, minus 2 of its biggest programs. The lure of easier competition combined with lower gates from not having UM and UW on the schedule might be enough to get them to switch. I don't think the fact the DU and UND still would be in the league would be a huge selling point for them to stay, although you could argue that with the WCHA weakened as well, they might as well just stay anyways. Just a thought.

  6. RE: STUDENTS

Not an excuse, however, students didn't show up at NDSU's game either.

    My guesses?

    1. The weather. Having turned cold early some may be taking that trip home now before it really sets in.

    2. ND pheasant opener.

    3. For UND, Gophers in town next weekend so this would be the weekend to go home (even before the first two above).

    4. Opponent: NDSU fans expected to get beat so they stayed home; UND fans asked "Stony Brook?" and assumed a lesser team.

Good points. As a student who was at the game, the turnout was horrible. However, there was a tons of seats open in the place. If the general public doesn't see fit to go to a game on a day where they couldn't be doing anything outside, then its wrong to think that the students should be out in full force. That said I would like to see more consistent support by the students.

I agree with all your points above and am going to add some of my own.

    1. The 1PM starts just doesn't draw as well as a 4PM one. I know it was at 1 so it didnt conflict with the hockey game but half of the students there were yawning most of the game. It seems dumb but the prospect of getting up, eating, and getting to the game before one just doesnt sit well with some students.

    2. While I love the hockey-football-hockey triple, I think it hurts football attendance. After hockey games, students are more likely to go to the bars, parties, etc. All of which make getting up for a football game against a no name opponent the next day much harder. A lot easier to recover during the day and then go to the hockey game.

    3. Also, some students skip the football game to go wait in line for hockey. Thats what worries me about next week. Last year, people were waiting in line for the gophers in below zero weather from 10 AM or earlier. I would expect no less this year. So even people that want to go to the football game may find themselves waiting in line during it. Couple this with a NAIA team, and I think we could see horrible turnout next week. Think SUU last year.

Bottom line is turnout was bad across the board. I can understand why that was, but they deserve more support then that.

  7. FINALLY! The Curtain has been pulled away from "goon" to reveal he MIGHT be the biggest knee-jerk reactionary ever (luckily) elected to the GF city council...TERRY BIERKE! (seriously - I'd like to know because I had no idea a knuckledragger like that neanderthal could learn to type  )

FYI GOON! - I've lived in GF for over 25 years. Came here as a UND student in the mid-80's and STAYED. (That says something in itself!) I've been a proud tax-paying homeowner in GF since 1998 - and HAPPILY payed my property taxes because I know WHAT i'm getting for my money! (Yes - TAX MONEY I'm willing to PAY for certain things)...such as....

--The Flood of '97! I was here during the flood...IT SUCKED! I fully supported the Flood Control Project we finally have in place - even though - OUCH - it cost me MONEY???? Well it left us with a protection that left us LAUGHING 11 years later while Fargo was sweating bullets trying to save their town last spring? (and they did it WITH GF'S help but that's another story) Seems like a good investment to me....

--The RALPH! (FREE to taxpayers because of the generosity of an Alum - nice for us!)

-- and the AL! An Indoor Football Facility that has propelled UND into the DI world where we would NEVER have been able to do it with just an outdoor stadium. As I've mentioned before....we payed through the nose for the crappy old Civic - I have no problem writing the difference in my property taxes for the difference for the Al..because it brings SO MUCH quality of life to GF! Concerts, trade shows, events, football games - everything! GF is WAY AHEAD of things with TWO great public facilities in a town of 50,000 people - Fargo barely makes money with the Fargobarn with 3X the metro population! The point is - we're pretty LUCKY facility-wise in little GF here IMO!! That's my entire point...

PS - MY homes value in GF has increased from the $80,000 we payed in 1998 to over $110,000 in 2009....don't know where you live buy maybe you should move to Prior Lake if you're "suffering" so much here...what's keeping you here? I just get so TIRED of the constant BITCHING ABOUT HOW BAD THINGS ARE HERE! If you don't like it....MOVE!!!!!

Can't say I normally agree with you but this is spot on.

  8. We get it you're a big government Liberal. So now Terry Bjerke is a knuckle dragger because he wants responsible government. Oh so let me get this straight, OBAMA and Liberal good, Conservative = no good.:lol:

This really isn't an issue of liberal vs conservative. I am one of the most conservative people I know but I support the Alerus 100%. So its not as easy as just drawing lines in the sand like you are trying to do.

  9. It appears that this is a one-game contract, as future UND schedules do not show a return trip to Stony Brook. If so, this was a very good job scheduling by Faison, et al., as Stony Brook appears to be a top 50 FCS team right now according to computer rankings. At a minimum, it helps to offset the fact that we agreed to play at Stephen F. Austin with no return trip.

I believe Iona may have played a part. I believe Stony Brook was supposed to have a home game with them this year. And it seems to me that we were also on Iona's schedule, though I don't remember if it was supposed to be this year or last year. If it was this year, both teams just needed 1 game. And I could see it making more sense financially to be played at UND.

  10. I have to admit I wasn't sure if I would like the 4:00 start but I think I am going to really like it. It is nice to have the morning off and also have a good part of the evening still left after the game.

I absolutely loved it. More time for pregame activities. And I think the crowd took advantage of it from what I saw. It will be interesting to compare the mood with this weekends game starting at 1PM.

  11. Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving up on the season yet. But there are some real concerns about the team in particular and the program in general that must be addressed. I think next week could determine whether this season gets turned around or goes straight into the tank.

I hear you. The D hasn't been the same for awhile. I think its improved this year but it still has a long way to go. And I agree about next week. I think every game from here on out, excluding the 2 NAIA, is going to be a dogfight. We need to defend home turf.

  12. I think people understand that we are a transitional team. I think people understand we won't win every game. But I also think that our fans expected to be a little more competitive than this. If we are ever going to be competitive in the upper echelon of DI FCS, a lot of things will have to change, especially in the next five years or so. Otherwise, we will develop a self-fulfilling reputation as a bottom-feeding, low-level FCS program. Once you get labeled like that, it will be hard to get the top-notch athletes you need to have to win games at this level. That is not what we had in mind when we decided to move up from our cushy spot in the world of DII. I think that is what people are a little concerned about.

True. I guess I just could agree if this has been a weekly thing, indicating a pattern. So far in my book this is an isolated occurance. If this happens again next week or against Davis or Poly, then yes we have issues. But I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt until then.

  13. I could live with a close loss on the road where we show up and compete. But to get absolutely blown out like this by a team that isn't that good is completely inexcusable.

I agree. But the game was a lot closer than the 1st half stats would indicate, even if we couldn't stop them to save our lives. What I am dissapointed in is that the team hasn't shown up in the 2nd half. We needed to score when we got the ball to start and we didn't. Its been all downhill from there.

  14. Good points, but I watched some of USD's game today vs. SE Louisiana in the Dakota Dome and they looked really good on offense. I am concerned on the fast track of the Alerus Center that we'll have more problems with the passing game next week.

I dont think SEL is that good. They barely beat both USD and UND last year at home. I think USD exposed them for the team they actually are. USD is the same team we have seen the past 3 years. Shep and company. And that hasn't turned out that bad for us.

  15. I guess I am in the minority but I don't think the world is ending like the some people here. We are playing a team whose no huddle seems to be catching our D before it gets set. This combined with our lack of offense mean this game is not going to be good. Now even special teams is collapsing. I have to believe this is just an example of having an off night on the back end of 3 road games.

Now if we go home next weekend and get dominated by the Yotes, then by all means we have issues. But this is reality. We are a transitioning team that had 1 legit D1 win last year, against Idaho State. To think we are going to run the non conference table seems to be quite the pipe dream.

  16. Maybe we'll be able to slow down Stony Brook? :D

I thought the defense would be better this year. So much for that idea.

I think it is. I think this game is the exception.

  17. The key play in the game thus far is the gift TD after the fumbled KO.

Exactly. We never got the opportunity to respond to their TD. The O only had only run 3 plays and SFA already had 21 on the board. If your gonna beat good teams you need to have a clean game. Thats the difference right now.

  18. Glad to hear Konrath is back and doing well.

I'm not the only fan you guys made in Lubbock (or in Europe). Check out London Raider's weekly report "How Our Opponents Fared". We've got your update, your game review, and check out the comments.

    DoubleTNation

Nice to see that and to read the comments. I think there is a lot of Sioux fans pulling for Tech up here too. It would sure be fun to see you guys beat Oklahoma.
