  1. Right now, No travel is advised from halfway between Brookings and Watertown. If anyone happens to make it to Watertown today, please post on here. I've got friends/family planning on trying to get to Watertown today from Sioux Falls and then waiting to see how things get in the afternoon.

I29 is still closed from Watertown to Fargo.

10 miles north of brookings. Pretty nasty out here. Decent visability but icy and snow packed roads. 40 MPH right now.

  2. Just an observation..............

Hanson is much more conservative with the ball than Hendrickson. He doesn't look downfield to often. Lots of short passes and bubble screens, almost a form of a running game.

And to me that is the biggest change in the last 1 1/2 games. The first 4 games Henrickson was able to chuck up the deep ball and our receivers used their skills to come down with it. We were gaining yards in huge chunks which led to the high scores. Against Cal Poly and from what I've seen tonight, the opposing D is focusing on stopping the deep ball and when we do get a guy open, Hendrickson either overthrows him or we drop the ball. Hanson leads a more methodical drive which will chew up clock and should be more effective as the D is playing the deep ball.

I think its pretty obvious to see the Hendrickson performed above his abilities earlier this year (and thank goodness for that). But Hanson should have control from here on out...

  3. I thought the D-I move was to improve the entire program, not restrain or minimize its top draw?

How is the D1 move restraining the top draw? If anything, one could argue the hockey program is holding back the rest of the sports by possibly ending the FCS broadcast agreement. This has absolutely nothing to do with the D1 move.

  4. It's looking like M1 will pass actually. Carlson had it written in a very misleading way to make it look like it would put greater restrictions on legislators being appointed to state positions.

I think he's talking about the nickname ammendment that they will try to get passed in November. However, I was pleased to see the wording of M1 when I went to the booth today. I feared it wouldn't pass but after seeing how it was written my fears subsided.

  5. Awesome news!!! This keeps alive the possibility of the continued existence of UND Fighting Sioux athletics. To those of you who insist this will kill sports at UND.... because you have been such condescending jerks about this, I can't wait to rub your noses in it after you've been proven wrong.

Perhaps it only appears that way to you because they are at an intelligence level you can't even dream about reaching?

  6. All of the talk in another thread about the last season of the WCHA rotating schedule got me thinking about future schedules and road trips....

Here's what we know about the NCHC schedule, beginning in 2013-2014.

    There are eight teams:

    Colorado College

    Denver

    Miami

    Nebraska-Omaha

    North Dakota

    Minnesota-Duluth

    St. Cloud State

    Western Michigan

The teams have agreed to play a rotating schedule of 24 conference games, leaving room for 10 non-conference games. Link

So that means that each school will play home-and-home with five other league members (20 games), host one league member for two games, and travel to another league member for two games.

The question is: Will the schools simply rotate through all seven opponents, or will schedule partners be implemented like we've grown accustomed to in the WCHA?

If there are schedule partners, the first obvious choice is Denver and Colorado College.

After that, it's speculation. Will Miami and Western Michigan be partnered up as the only two league members from the fomer CCHA?

If that's the case, then we are left with four: North Dakota, Duluth, St. Cloud, and Nebraska-Omaha.

I'm torn here. I like the partnership with St. Cloud State but I think UND and UMD have a great rivalry also. Aside from the Dean Blais connection, I'm not sure there's much with Nebraska-Omaha yet.

It may come down to travel. The pairings that add up to the least total travel for the schools involved is:

    North Dakota/Nebraska-Omaha (500 miles) + St. Cloud State/Duluth (145 miles) = 645 miles

This next arrangement is very close:

    North Dakota/Duluth (267 miles) + St. Cloud State/Omaha (380 miles) = 647 miles

Forcing Nebraska-Omaha and Duluth to travel to each other every year (533 miles) seems a bit much, but it would preserve North Dakota/St. Cloud State and the Challenge Cup.

    Sorry this got long. Thoughts?

    Dave

For selfish reasons, I would love to see UND paired with Duluth. Absolute great town with a brand new rink thats awesome to watch a game at. And as you pointed out, travel in that scenario isn't an issue. However, I think they will pair up the Minnesota schools and pair us up with Omaha as the "I29 corridor" grouping for geographical reasons. I won't complain too hard about that pairing because the travel is equal and I hear Omaha is also a pretty nice town to visit.

I don't want to see us paired up with St. Cloud again. Just not a huge fan of the city or rink, although I look forward to seeing it after they finish with the improvements.

  7. The three pairs that we could get in our pod next season would be Denver/Colorado College, Duluth/Michigan Tech, or Anchorage/Mankato. I can't pick up any sort of pattern from the last two seasons that would lead me in one direction or another.

The tidbit about already making our last trip to Anchorage sounds familiar to me, too.

So that leaves Denver/Colorado College or Duluth/Michigan Tech. Unless there is some other information, I would lean toward Duluth/Michigan Tech in our pod since the Colorado schools will both be in the NCHC with North Dakota beginning in 2013-14.

Anyone else have information on this?

    Dave

That's what I was hoping for but according to the link I posted of Duluth's preliminary schedule, they are in a pod with Omaha and Bemidji. Which is why I am guessing we will be with the Colorado Schools.

ESPNHS continues its weekly feature, Around the Crease, which takes a look at players, teams and high school lacrosse news from around the country.

    No Distance Too Far

How far will one team go to play lacrosse?

If the team is the Grand Cities Predators, then more than 1,250 miles this season.

Awesome. I hope their first season goes great. Despite never having played it, I'm a huge fan of lacrosse and would love to see it expand in North Dakota. Between GF and Fargo having teams, it looks like it might be moving in that direction.

  9. So, how early will the 2012-2013 road schedule starts to trickle out?

Can't come out soon enough! Although the amount of local road trips may be a bit less than last year. From what I gather, either the Colorado schools or UAA and Mankato will be in our pod. Although I thought I remembered reading that this was the last year going to Anchorage in the WCHA which would leave us with the only the Colorado schools as likely pod partners.

If that's the case, we should have trips to St. Cloud, Michigan Tech, Minnesota, Mankato, Omaha, Denver, and CC on the schedule. It's too bad Wisconsin and Duluth won't be on there as those were the best trips from this year in my opinion. I am looking forward to Omaha and the outdoor game, however.

  10. If people can't see that then they really have no clue.

Unfortunately, even after we do get a national title these same clueless individuals will be the first ones calling for Hak's head the first season we miss the ncaa tourney. To them, due to our past history all other teams are inferior to us and should bow down to our supposed greatness. It's absolute nonsense.

  11. The NCAA Lacrosse final four is in Baltimore every year because a majority of the Lacrosse teams are out of the Northeastern part of the United States....and wouldn't you believe it.....the national championship is always pretty well attended. Wonder why the NCAA can't get it figured out with hockey.....idiots.

Just a minor correction. The Lacrosse final is on an irregular rotation between Baltimore, Boston, and Philadelphia. Baltimore had it the last couple of years but it will be in Boston this year. Still, it holds to your point of having the championships in the area of the country that most supports the sport.

However, its been 13 years since the last warm weather frozen four so I'm going to withhold judgment on future ones until I see the attendance figures. Personally, I think having it in a football stadium (Detroit) was far more egregious.

  12. Not that it matters, but you would think it would be a bigger advantage for the #1 seed to play the early game on Friday. Assuming they win, they would have a longer recovery time then playing the night game.

I've always thought so too. And now thinking back to the basketball tournaments this wknd, the 1 seeds generally did play in the afternoon. However, they sure didn't follow that format last year with UND playing the night game as a 1 seed.

  13. Here is the breakdown, brought to you by the Minnesota rule.

I've seen a couple of people make mention to this in the last couple of days. The Minnesota rule only changes the normal order of the games when the gophers aren't the number 1 seed. But that won't be in play this year as Minnesota is the 1 seed and will be playing the night game as the 1 seed normally does.

  14. Correct me if I am wrong, but if Wisconsin wins Denver is out so we are a 3 seed, meaning we do not play thursday and get to play Minnesota-Duluth on Friday. Winner of Wisconsin and St Cloud would get UM, Has the format of the tournament changed??

Your forgetting about Michigan Tech. The format you described was the format used when the WCHA had 10 teams and 5 advanced to St. Paul. Since they expanded to 12 teams last year, 6 teams advance to the X. Thus, the 3 seed will always play on Thursday.

  15. Question, why do they call it the final five when there is 6 teams?

Because when there was 10 teams in the WCHA, there was 5 teams that advanced to St. Paul. After they expanded to 12 teams, they wanted to keep the Final Five brand for its recognition. The 5 now refers to the number of games played at the X and not the number of teams there.

Edit: Smoggy beat me to it

  16. As far as I can tell the CHA does not have an autobid because they only have 4 teams. So even though RMU won that conference, they won't make the NCAA tourney. Thus it basically all comes down to if Duluth wins tonight or not.

  17. Coach Jones wife, thats funny. Just because I have supported this team and coach for the last several years i am his wife. If it were up to most of you we would have started over before last year and may not have had any of these freshman. It got out of control when Huff started thinking he was the team again. Glad Jones pulled him again when he tried another circus shot. Go Sioux

Seriously? Often times Dan is the only person posting updates on the basketball team. Your gonna call him out for speaking the truth? I like this win as well as anyone and I am very pleased with the strides that this team has made this season. But the fact of the matter is there is still room for improvement. Its the theme of this team to not close out games very well. How is stating that somehow a putdown of the team? Anybody (except you, apparently) is aware of this. It isn't breaking news.

And who took a piss in everyones cheerios this week? Cripes there are alot of irrational fans posting this week....
