  1. Just so everyone knows UND doesn't own the airplanes. The UND Aerospace Foundation does.

The University Foundation charged university departments for at least some of the trips. The fact that this isn't tax money doesn't mean it's not STATE money and has to be spent and accounted for in the same way other state money is. So while I know you're a good guy, that's not a good point.

I see no reason whatsoever that the University President should have a private luxury jet. He runs a state institution, not one with offices all over the country.

  2. I disagree on relevance and time to get back into the upper half of college hockey...they still have a lot of talented players. In fact, they are also a very young team. A good coaching staff could return that program to Frozen Four material in a year. The Gophers have no team identity anymore. That is the problem. They used to be the super skilled, finesse, dominate the special teams, pride on ice...they were what they were and they were successful...every bit as elite as we are or Wisconsin or Michigan or the Boston schools. Their failures have been in trying to be something that they aren't: they aren't tough, they aren't grinders, they aren't underdogs...you have to be what you are and make no apologies.

You can't get very far on whining alone.

  3. My prediction: tDon and his entire staff will not be back for the 2011-2012 campaign

I wouldn't be surprised. I wouldn't blame the coaching staff for the record that they have had the last two seasons. I think their failure to compete in much of the season is the reason they should be fired.

I expect at least a major shakeup with at least Hill gone.

In case nobody got it, the Gophers were a pretty good program until tDon hired his buddy hill.

  4. It is actually kind of sad to see a program as storied as Minnesota's suffer like this. I hate the Gophs as much as any Sioux fan, but I take no pleasure in their misery. They are where we were in the early '90's...they'll right the ship again,

    With John Hill?

  5. That's what I get for being optimistic. Has G.F. ever had a notable economic development success? Sigh.

Well LM Windpower seems to be doing well so far. But of course that industry benefits from mandates and subsidies. I don't believe that has paid for itself, but I really don't know. I've been unable to determine just how much we've given them.

In my opinion it's immoral to take my money against my will and give it to a private enterprise. The people that wrote that section of the state constitution apparently felt the same way.

  6. It seems that the vote has been pushed back because a number of our fearless leaders have decided to flee the country on a junket to Europe.

Don't worry about them, between the taxpayers and the special corporate interests our leaders won't have to pay a dime.

  7. Sorry to bring up an old thread.

    Cirrus expands.

Lays off bunch of people recently down to 75 workers.

Owes the city $850,000 in back rent.

Last month Cirrus was sold to a Chinese Company.

I hate to correct you but the figure reported in the Herald recently was that they owe us $1.5 million in back rent.

And the geniuses in the Grand Forks Government bought 699,000 shares of their stock. I think if they want to play the market they should spend their own money. Never mind that governments owning stock in a private business is contrary to the ND constitution, Section X article 18.

Maybe some would say this was a good idea but when did the public have a chance to weigh in?

  8. Just a little frustration with the blogosphere and things like that coming to the forefront. I just get frustrated sometimes with people throwing stuff on a blog and it being taken as good journalism. I worked very hard for a long time to get where I am and crappy blogs that lack research and facts just get under my skin. Sorry. I'm on a six-day Sioux hockey-less streak and I need it quenched haha. This coupled with a cold makes for one disgruntled poster ha

Half of my blogging seems to be on uncovering factual errors put out by the GF Herald. When I email the facts to the reporter I might get a response but never a correction.

  9. I am seeing more and more stories from these media outlets coming AFTER I see a post here on siouxsports.com. They have gone as far as quoting posters on the messageboard. The latest WDAZ "SCOOP" was the Gaddafi rebel wearing the Sioux shirt, which was old news to me, since I read the story this morning. The Williams and Ree story was also posted on siouxsports.com first, with a GF Herald story coming later.

Thanks to all of the fine members of this site, these guys have a much easier job. And to all of the WDAZ and GF Herald people reading this right now, instead of lurking, why don't you register, say hi, or maybe offer a kind "thank you" to the posters on this site?

What's interesting is that I saw the story on the Herald's site linked over to 'daz. I posted it on SayAnythingBlog, sourcing WDAZ, not knowing it probably started out here.

I'm not surprised that reporters are doing more research out on the blogs. With the cutbacks they have they aren't out on the streets very often anymore. It's got to be a lot more efficient getting your story ideas off of the net.

  10. State support of higher ed = lower tuition, or at least controlling it. Gov. D's proposad budget called for a influx of monies to ND colleges and universities which, had it not been cut by the house, would have "froze" tuition for at least two years.

That six million set to "freeze" tuition wouldn't have been what I would have cut. Helping out the kids is my only priority when it comes down to higher ed.

But even so that's only pittance compared to the over all funding increase in the House Bill. I think there is money there for the NDUS to put off any tuition increase. They will increase it though because in my opinion they only care about the administration and faculties.

  11. Folks, Al Carlson's "Sioux moniker" bill was the opening salvo in this battle, a nice little ruse, a trial balloon to see if his real motive would get traction.

This is the real Al Carlson bomb on this session: He wants to take control of education in ND, from K through post-doctorate, directly into the Legislature.

    • State Superintendent of Schools? Nope. Political appointee.
    • ND SBoHE? Nope. 11 member board looking at all K-Higher Ed.
    • And elimination of college names from the state constitution to boot.

Out of all of that, I guess I sort of agree with the last point.

The State Board of Higher Education has done a terrible job. I don't think this particular proposal is all that good, but something has to change. Tuition is skyrocketing, state support of higher education is skyrocketing* much more than that, but still the schools are crying that they don't have enough money.

    Something is wrong.

*60% increase in the last two sessions alone. If you count the house bill it will be up 75% over the three sessions.

  12. Hauled to the dump since Frenchy's was build on a concrete slab.

Way back a few years after Frenchy's closed some guy at a storage site said that he had all the old mugs and was willing to let people pick them up. I never got into Frenchy's and never had a mug so I didn't worry much about who had what.

Still this was all pre flood I suppose and I don't know that someone would have held on to them all.
