  1. What you believe is wrong. The people have voted for the council members who made the decision it is called representation. My interest is no different than yours. If you are so concerned about letting people vote where were you when Benson County closed the polling location on Spirit Lake?

Just a clarification. Benson county went to voting by mail, something I disapprove of by the way. All residents of the county had the choice of voting by mail or voting in person at the county seat.

Treating everyone equally is bad now.

  2. I believe it was about 58,000. At least I read that somewhere. I'm curious as to how that stacks up with other years.

Edit: looks like last few years were over 80k and in 70s prior to that. So definitely down, but I think the 2 Thursday games hurt as well.

    No third place game....

  3. Odd that Denver and ND are in the same region. I wonder if some were trying to ensure that another WCHA-only tournament doesn't occur by putting Merrimack in the Northeast instead of Denver? Swapping Merrimack and Denver would also bring the Northeast regional from two Hockey East teams to one...

I believe that this is the natural bracket according to the PWR ranking. #1 plays #16.....

So while it seems unfair, it's a reflection on how the power is flawed, underranking both UND and Dumbver (as compared by the polls or the KRACH) rather than a decision by the committee.

By the way I noticed that Jim Dahl has a really neat comparison feature with all the major rankings on it.

  4. Disgraceful only because you did not get your way. If they had gone the other way you would be singing their praises. Why are all of you not calling for the AG's head, he made the deal you hate.

He made the deal only with consultation and approval from the Board of Higher Education. While I do blame him and did not vote for him for reelection I think the blame still goes to the Board of Higher Education who certainly had final say.

  5. Its terrible. I get sea sick looking at it. Why wouldnt they just stream the game? And don't even tell me its more expensive to stream the normal views.

Because if they stream the game, then people will watch the commercials as well and Fox doesn't want anyone to see them because they make more money.

You can't expect sports announcers to sell out for purely pecuniary reasons. After all they are artists.

  6. In my experience, as an alum, the University of North Dakota has a solid reputation regionally. I have never, ever heard anyone with whom I have interacted professionally say either UND or NDSU is a mediocre school.

By the way, Mr. Port, are you on this message board to support UND or to spread your extreme conservative ideology? If its the latter, you really should stick to blogging.

We're supposed to support UND no matter what? Admittedly while politics are off limits there seems to be a gray area when political matters interact with our athletic teams which I believe this does.

In my opinion there's something rotten starting in Twamley Hall and it's up to the alumni to address it.

  7. It's a well known fact, not surprising at all to people who actually follow the budges and higher ed issues.

Which is a real problem with a lot of this debate in the public. The state's media doesn't dig into anything, instead relying on the higher ed bureaucrats to tell us how it is. And the picture they paint is rosy, outside of needing more money to build their empires.

But by all means, please do look into it. I don't think you'll like what you see if you look honestly.

Unfortunately the Board of Higher Education and too often the legislators get all of their information from the administration who are building their empires.

  8. The biggest fiasco of recent times occurred when one university president was able to defy his boss (chancellor of higher ed), skirt the rules and build his own personal fiefdom (see president's house fiasco, lavish charters to Washington), in large part because he had the explicit political backing of the sitting governor.,,,

    HUH? What?

It was the Board of Higher Education that gave Whiskey Joe Chapman cover for all of his misdeeds. It was the board of higher education that overruled the chancellor.

Now one could say that the Governor influenced the BOHE because he appointed who he wanted on there. But after the governor has no influence on their decisions.

  9. I know the majority of the faculty voted against the state legislation (actually, only the aviation department faculty either abstained or voted against), but unqualified?

I'm as mad as the next guy over this logo issue, but I think this is getting out of control quickly. We're starting to utilize "mob mentality." In one short discussion thread we've gone from saying the SBOE President should resign, to the State Board of Higher Education should be disbanded, to all state institutions should be privatized,

Who said all state institutions should be privatized?

to North Dakota college students don't graduate (blatantly false compared to national averages),

We have a poor graduation rate. Maybe other places are worse but that doesn't make us good.

And again, some people think the system is broke and want the state legislature to take over (they want bigger government to take over and solve the problem).

How is eliminating a layer of government mean we want bigger government.

Personally, I think the people at the Board are broke, not the system.

We've got a good person or two on the board and they vote along with the turkey's. The system is broke.

  10. I agree, Schlossman's description of that goal is off a bit. There was great puck movement to the guy at the top of the circle and he wired that slapper short-side corner. Beautiful. When UND took that penalty with just under 3 remaining I was a bit nervous.

It's been rare this year when the Sioux have been outtalented like CC did on a couple of those powerplay goals.
