    Toews Watch

My fav Buck Pitchers memory was of my friend Doug from Dickinson who after filling his gullet with bad beer for several hours would often end the afternoon (Buck Pitchers started at 11:00 a.m. for those under 40) by walking up to the most gorgeous girl he could find and asking her to dance. When she politely declined, Doug would say, "That's okay, I have to go take a s**t anyway." The rest of us slobs would howl with laughter at the look on her face and then we would all rush out the door so we could make it back to Wilkerson before it closed. I wonder whatever happened to Doug...
  3. Let's not forget the fact that each of Hak's FF teams were all but written off at some point during each season only to have monster second halves and momentum going into the NCAA tournament. It wasn't like so many of Wooger's teams or even some of Lucia's more recent teams which were ranked high all season long and received #1 seeds only to lay an egg in the NCAA tournament. Hak's teams were overachievers just to make it into the FFs. Sure it stunk losing to BC again this year, but you can't consider a team that won 24 of 43 games to have "choked" ala the Golden Chokers of years past. DB had much stronger teams in 1998, 1999 and 2004 and came away with nothing. Hak rules, in my book, and it's just a matter of time before he brings home #8 to the Sioux "faithful."
  4. My family had the privilege of an invitation into the parents' locker room after one of the Duluth games last Feb. We got to meet some of the players and Joe Finley and Brian Lee were easily the most cordial. Lee had a big smile on his face the entire time while he was signing my son's jersey, talking to me about Digger Anderson and cajoling with the rest of the players. If, as someone said, none of the other players like him, that contrasts with what I saw. I think much of what's being said in his regard is pure speculation with a dose of hogwash mixed in. It seems there are an awful lot of people who suddenly have "reliable sources." I frankly don't see Lee or any other player moving on simply because of what a few lard-headed fans have said or think. When you're gifted enough to play at the DI college level, you move on because it's time to do so and you believe it's the best move in order to develop as a player. Sit back, relax, and don't get too worked up by what you read on this or any other message board. We're used to players leaving early and no doubt the same thing is going to happen again. If Brian Lee does leave early, I will miss his play on the PP. I'm sure the coaches and the other players will miss him as well. Like every other player on the team, he made mistakes, but he held the point better than anyone else (in my opinion) and generally knew what he was going to do with the puck before it ever got to him.
  5. Say what you want about Lee, but he's played an awesome game.
  6. My husband, diggin42, is stuck in DC because of the storm and there's a good possibility that he won't make it home for tomorrow's game. Could either hrkac or the player who lives near Happy Acres in Blaine please collect the money from everyone if he can't make it? Our share was $115. Please kick in an extra dollar per player for the ref. Thanks and GO SIOUX!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. Maybe we can find a "sudo" reporter to cover the game...
  8. I'm looking at an SS.com-less week as I'll be out of town until Friday evening. We had one guy unable to make it to the throwdown, so here's what the final roster looks like: brianvf Phats mksioux BigGreyAnt41 Fire Chartreuse Musky Killer & Sioux fan cousin who played in 2003 & 2004 Stuckinfargo (goalie) hrkac dj (hrkac's cousin, Sioux grad and fan who played last year) BigChief 747Guy MinnesotaNorthStar A-a-a-Cheechoo ber818's husband Todd - Sioux grad, fan and stuckinfargo's buddy who played last year roper1313 Also, kateskate said she was hoping to make it to the game as a spectator and I asked her to throw in her gear in case anyone has Sunday morning greenbeeritis. I thought about having a curfew, but Herb Brooks once said he never set curfews because only the best players got caught. Well, that and the obvious fact that nobody would have any reason to listen to me anyway. If everyone is able to make it, the cost will be roughly $9/person. The $9 includes $1 each to pay the ref and excludes the goalie. I hope there's lots of chatter about this game while I'm away and everyone gets jacked up for Sunday's game. Sioux fans who spend time reading this board would have a memorable time if you made it a point to watch this game. Just ask Sioux-cia and her family.
  9. AZ, are you going to stay for Sunday's 5th Annual SS.com vs. POI throwdown?
  10. MM, did you ever get that missing jersey from last year? Here's the current roster for the defending title holders: brianvf Phats mksioux BigGreyAnt41 Fire Chartreuse Musky Killer Stuckinfargo (goalie) Bacardio hrkac dj (hrkac's cousin, Sioux grad and fan who played last year) BigChief 747Guy MinnesotaNorthStar A-a-a-Cheechoo ber818's husband Todd - Sioux grad, fan and stuckinfargo's buddy who played last year roper1313 That's 14 position players and a goalie. Everyone except the big ant and roper have played in previous games. There are a couple of others who have never played who have expressed interest. Everyone agrees that SS.com doesn't want to go back to when we skated with 18-20 guys. If your name is listed above and you're fairly sure you won't be able to play for whatever reason, please say so and we'll add another player. If you're certain having St. Patty's day on Saturday is going to prevent you from being able to play on Sunday, you really need to decide now whether you want to drink those extra 6 green beers or play in this game. The roster is full and if you don't make it on Sunday, then you've taken a roster spot from someone else who could have played.
  11. BC just jumped ahead of us in the PWR with a win over UNH.
  12. Here's what's happened tonight for the teams ahead and behind the Sioux in the PWR coming into tonight's game. Minn - L UNH - L STC - W ND - W BU - L Maine - W Clarkson - W Denver - ? Mich - L Miami - L BC - W Mich St - L CC - L St. Lawr - L Dart - W
  13. BB stills gives a good interview: http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/bruins...core_to_settle/
  14. Peter Chiarelli is the Bruins GM. He was with the Ottawa Senators as an Asst. GM when Bochenski started with them. He's also a college hockey guy having worn the "C" with Harvard back in the days of the Hrkac Circus. What does all of this mean? Maybe nothing. But maybe it means Bochenski was sought out by Chiarelli and that the Bruins, like New Jersey, aren't afraid of players from the NCAA. Boston did give up Kris Versteeg, who was the leading scorer for their AHL affiliate, so at this point it appears as though this wasn't a meaningless transaction and may be a positive for BB.
  15. Here's the SS.com roster at this point (all have played in previous years): brianvf Phats mksioux BigGreyAnt41 Fire Chartreuse Musky Killer Stuckinfargo (goalie) Bacardio hrkac dj (hrkac's cousin, Sioux grad and fan who played last year) BigChief 747Guy MinnesotaNorthStar A-a-a-Cheechoo ber818's husband Todd - Sioux grad, fan and stuckinfargo's buddy who played last year roper1313 That's 14 position players and a goalie. Others who have expressed interest are: Prpichrocks 19 Siouxper 7 and squirtcoach's son through squirtcoach - played in games 2 and 3 SS.com players need to decide if the current roster is enough, or if others are welcome. Siouxtraveler and bertibm, with all due respect, you guys need to settle your differences somewhere else. We all owe bertibm a hand because he's the one who spearheads this every year and gets the ice & ref lined up. Siouxtraveler, you made me look good as the SS.com organizer last year by sending a couple of solid players even though I had told you that SS.com had enough players. A couple of SS.com players weren't able to make it on game day, so your two players gave us needed depth. But this game is not about bertibm or Siouxtraveler. Each year the game has been a blast, and I say that from the perspective of one who has played in a couple of games and watched as a spectator (I'm much better at being a spectator). Let's not let personal issues put a petty end to something that's unique and pretty f'in cool in the world of college hockey. Pardon the language, but Toews is my hero and I guess it just slipped.
  16. It was Chelios and I'm pretty sure it was in the "Water Bottle" game in Madison. It happened off of a faceoff in Wisco's end and I remember reading where Troy Murray skated back to the Sioux bench right after and apologized to Gino for losing the faceoff.
  17. Mankato up 3-1 on Sconny with 6:00 left in the 3rd. STC 2-0 over DU in the 1st
  18. The game usually starts sometime between 10:00 and 1:00, or so. As far as I'm concerned, you're welcome to play. However, I don't play in this game, so it's not up to me. Two and three years ago, SS.com had 18-20 players, which was simply too much. Last year, the guys who had played in the first 3 games talked about trying to keep the number to around 12-14 position players. I think we ended up with 12 or 13, and everyone seemed happy. There was some flow to the game for the SS.com players and everyone got ice time. A decision had to be made as to how to keep the number manageable. The best, and I believe fairest, solution was to give preference to those who had previously played for SS.com and add new players, as needed. I'm throwing this out now to make sure the SS.com players have what they want/need come March 18. Do you still want to keep the number to around 12-14 position players, or should we open the game up to all Sioux fans and play with whatever we have on game day? SS.com players, please post your thoughts because I am in no position to decide much of anything in this regard.
  19. SS.com's roster is filling in nicely: brianvf Phats mksioux BigGreyAnt41 Fire Chartreuse Musky Killer Stuckinfargo (goalie) Bacardio hrkac BigChief 747Guy Here's an article mentioning kateskate: http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=23606
  20. I've got some bad news and some GREAT news for both teams. The bad news is that kateskate emailed me to let me know that she won't be able to join in the fun this year. The GREAT news is that Katie Wyman, freshman goalie from Anoka H.S., recently started wearing sweater #1 for the Sioux! Way to go kateskate!!! http://www.fightingsioux.com/sports/whockey/roster.asp Some have expressed concern in the past about the game evolving to where former Sioux and Gopher players started playing and taking away the fun for the average skater. Who would have guessed the opposite would happen and a former SS.com/POI player would start playing in the WCHA? We can all say we knew her way back when.
  21. SS.com should be fine. It's very early in the team-gathering process for us and already we have: brianvf Phats mksioux BigGreyAnt41 Fire Chartreuse Musky Killer Stuckinfargo All but 2 or 3 players from last year's team live in the area, so SS.com will be able to put a team on the ice even if the Sioux don't make it to the Final 5 (shudder). I've got emails out to the others who played last year, so we should know of more players soon.

  23. American Indian Services is a 50-year old organization that exists to provide scholarships for native americans. I'm part Chippewa and a UND alum and am proud to be a contibutor to AIS. The following link provides a list of colleges and universities which accept AIS scholarships. Guess which university does not accept them? So much for being one of NCAA's "model universities." http://www.americanindianservices.org/stud...choollists.html (I don't see St. Cloud State on this list either.)
  24. I pulled this off of one of the Blackhawks message boards, so take it for what it's worth. It's reportedly from an AP story: ``It's pretty awesome,'' Toews said after he was chosen. ``It's great to be here and at the top of the draft, and to have a chance to be part of the Chicago Blackhawks is unbelievable.'' ``Until I'm able to play in the NHL, I don't want to leave UND,'' he said. ``We had such a great team last season, and it's going to be the same thing this season. It's a special group of special guys. So, until I'm ready, I want to stay.''
