  1. It makes sense to me as a practical measure for avoiding lawsuits from Native Nations. If a school on the list was able to ensure that the NCAA wasn't going to be sued, they got taken off the list. The great irony here is that the NCAA is being sued by a Sioux Nation to keep the nickname! Darned if they did and darned if they didn't.
  2. I'm probably biased, but I tend to think of liberal policy has being pragmatic rather than ideological. Therefore, I think of the hostile and absuive policy being based in lawsuit mitigation. I don't foresee any Spartans or Dutchmen suing the NCAA over athletic team nicknames or mascots.
  3. Interesting, thanks. Though I don't know if I trust CSinfo as a source - but at least his thoughts seem reasonable. Also, I don't buy for a second that Boise and San Diego St are going to make good on their move to the Big East football conference. It's beyond brainless for them to move when they know full well that the Big East is going to lose its auto bid to the big time bowls. They need to stay in the MWC and fight the good fight for access to better bowls in that conference. Maybe SD St still goes to the Big West to save money on non-football travel costs. MWC shouldn't have a problem with that, with Hawaii already doing the Big West thing.
  4. So if Douple gets fired, you're ok with the Summit doing well?
  5. Omaha dropped football to join the Summit and promote DI hockey and bball, so I don't see why schools like St Cloud, Mankato and Duluth couldn't do something similar. All have decent sized markets, especially Duluth and St Cloud. Although I seem to recall recently that St Cloud defeated a proposal to drop football.
  6. I think it would be interesting data to see how many schools in DII and FCS actually bring in more revenue than the cost of the scholarships given to players on the team. My intuition is that the percentage of FCS teams that bring in more revenue than it costs them in scholarships is no higher than DII.
  7. Oral Roberts and Sourthern Utah are leaving the Summit for Southland and Big Sky, respectively. Those are finished deals. If Butler leaves the Horizon for the A10, you could see any of Oakland, IUPUI and IPFW leave the Summit for the Horizon. Not sure if it would be one, two or all of those schools. The rest of the Summit consists of Western Illinois and five schools in the interstate 29 corridor from Kansas City to Fargo. Getting a partner for Western Illinois would be a good step to take, regardless. I would love to try plucking Eastern Illinois from the OVC, but that would only be possibly if they could play football in the MVFC. Have not heard anything about Youngstown leaving the Horizon or MVFC, but neither move would pose much concern for NDSU and might actually open the MVFC door for a potential new Summit member that plays football.
  8. The guy was straight up outed. Embarrassing report of his arrest that included his legal name, address, cell phone number were all made public info from the "wraith" email he sent to Al Carlson. Didn't even slow him down. Not one iota of shame. He continues to spray his diarrhea all over the internet via cell phone. If there was one person that I could ban from being associated with NDSU, he would be it. It's only going to be a matter of time before he gets the university in trouble somehow via his stalking of recruits.

    SBOHE

He can't get it done without expoiting an emotionally charged issue.

    SBOHE

Yep. I think you're absolutely correct in basically all counts. There are a group of people that view the state higher education system as just another thing that the government spends money on - and they hate it. They want to limit that money. I do believe Carlson is "one of them" and they've concocted the whole thing as a ploy to kill the current system and replace it with something that will make it easier to limit money spent on higher education in the state, across the board.

    SBOHE

If you pretend that the nickname had been settled years ago and that Al Carlson was retired years ago... does this proposal still make sense? Honest question, I don't really know. I guess what I'm asking: is the SBoHE a bad set-up to control higher education in ND? Try to answer without any emotion tied to the nickname.
  12. Well firstly, it is just talk. Like everything, nothing official until the actual announcement is made. But most recently, this: http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/x1544617177/Chuck-Landon-Conference-shuffling-isnt-over-quite-yet
  13. AQ status is dead. BCS conferences want to kill it to prevent all these "radical" conference realignments, ie, they want to prevent Big East from adding San Diego and Boise just for the sake of preserving the AQ. The conference champion of the Big East football conference is no longer going to have an automatic slot in the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar or Orange bowl anymore. Those bowls will go back to how it was before the Bowl Alliance and will probably contract with the big conferences to fill their slots for New Year's day games. And those bowls are just fine with that. They won't have to potentially give slots away to Big East teams or non-AQ teams that don't sell tickets to the bowls, don't travel well and don't draw large TV numbers.
  14. I could see Utah St as an attempt to reclaim some attention from SLC, but with Boise and San Diego potentially staying in the MWC - does not seem like SJ would be welcomed by Fresno and San Diego.
  15. You could be correct, but I don't think LA Tech wants anything to do with Monroe, Lafayette and the Sun Belt.
  16. Seems like WAC should merge with Sun Belt, like the MWC and CUSA have merged. Potential conference: Boise St (WAC non-fball) - Idaho (WAC fball) Seattle (WAC non-fball) - San Jose St (WAC fball) Denver (WAC non-fball) - New Mexico St (WAC fball) Utah St (WAC fball) Texas San Antonio (WAC fball) - Texas St (WAC fball) Texas Arlington (WAC non-ball) - North Texas (SB fball) Louisiana Tech (WAC fball) Louisiana Monroe (SB fball) - Louisiana Laf (SB fball) UALR (SB non-fball) - Ark St (SB fball) Mid Tenn (SB fball) - W Kentucky (SB fball) South Alabama (SB fball) - Troy (SB fball) Fla Intl (SB fball) - Fla Atl (SB fball)
  17. So there is going to be a vote in June asking people of ND if UND should be the Fighting Sioux (undoes the repeal of the law?) and then another vote in _____ asking people of ND if there should be a constitutional amendment requiring UND to be the Fighting Sioux? And these two votes are the results of two petitions that collected enough signatures? Now the state AG asked the state supreme court to rule the law that was repealed in November to be unconstitutional, which is the result of a lawsuit filed by the SBoHE? And just now Carlson's comittee has hired it's own lawyer. Is there somewhere that a lay person can go to just read a straight facts timeline of this issue from the time that the law was enacted to now?
  18. I'd be careful, remember lakesbison sent him an email from a fake account saying "you'll feel the wraith" and ol' Al sic'ed the ND state police on him. Granted, he sent the email right after Giffords was gunned down...that probably had something to do with it.
  19. The lawsuit is the only hope. NCAA won't care if it's in the ND constituion.
  20. If it makes to a statewide vote and they vote that UND should be the Fighting Sioux -- then what happens?
  21. Man every time I see this it pisses me off that UND, a team not even eligible for the playoffs until 2012, is going to have better practice facilities than NDSU in the primary, flagship sport at NDSU.
  22. Hadn't heard this. No doubt title IX created more opportunities for females to participate in intercolligiate athletics than there would have been without the legislation.
  23. Could UND put their own channel on DirecTV or Dish Network and show hockey games on that (if not on CBS)? Does anyone know the cost of having the UND channel on dish distribution?
  24. Anyone know how much it costs to have the UND channel offered on whatever the Grand Forks cable network is (MidCon?) vs. the cost of having it on DirecTV? Can it be that expensive?? BYU has their network on satellite.
  25. Navy joining Big East for football only in 2015: http://www.washingto...ciNQ_story.html With BE losing Syracuse, Pitt and West Virginia and not adding TCU, they're down to UConn, Louisville, Cincy, South Florida and Rutgers as football members. In 2013 they'll add Central Florida, Southern Methodist and Houston to get back to 8 full members that play football in the Big East and 8 full members that don't (or don't have football). Also in 2013 they'll add Boise St and San Diego St as football only members, which will give them 10. So is Air Force still in the MWC for the long haul? Or perhaps will Army join Navy as a football only member of the Big East? Army joining makes more sense to me of those two possibilities given they're actually in the east and adding teams across country just for the BCS autobid is about to become moot. I would also send Boise and San Diego back to the MWC, once it becomes official that BCS autobids are dead. Big East champion is never going to the Orange, Sugar or Fiesta bowl again!
