What is the source on this number? If Kolpack's numbers are right, then UND is eliminating all state general appropriation on the athletics side.

Kolpack's my source.  I probably have much too faith in him that he's right, but until I see something different it's all we have to go on.  I tried to find the number on the NDUS site, but it's very difficult to find budget line item detail on that.

Tweaking ain't enough when the talent pool is slipping! And now coaches leaving added to the equation. Going to be a different landscape when we C U in the Hawk's Nest in 2020.

    I love the enthusiasm!!

NDSU's offense has never done anything exceptional; however, what they do they do exceptionally well*. Guys do not miss blocks; backs hit the holes on time; routes are run correctly; the QB just has to be efficient (and anything more makes the precision lethal). When you watch them closely, they have maybe four run block schemes, six primary pass routes. They just do them, as I said, exceptionally well so it is hard to defend them.

If NDSU stays with that formula, well, meet the new OC, same as the old OC. If the new OC thinks he's going to bring in something "kinda cool kinda now kinda hip kinda wow" he (and Klieman) better be ready for some tough, ugly criticism if it doesn't fire on all cylinders immediately.

*I consider that a great compliment.

This is spot on for the most part. I think one thing NDSU needs to do better is push the hall down the field. Carson Wentz could do that with average-to-good receivers in Urzendowski, Shepard, and Vraa, but that's a once in a lifetime thing. James Madison played single high safety all day and dared us to beat them and we couldn't. I'm hopeful Messingham might tweak a few things there.

So which is it....is he a "grand slam hire" or is he about the same as Polasek?  Time will tell how good he is, but his resume certainly is blowing anyone away.

I think Polasek was a good oc, so that makes Messingham a grand slam hire imo.

If you are talking about comparing Polasek vs. Messingham when they were each hired at NDSU, that is a different argument than replacing Polasek as he is right now with Messingham. Again, nothing in the results from his previous teams screams grand slam. His tie to Klieman was the main reason behind the hire, not his past success. He may very well turn out just fine but calling it a grand slam is really stretching it.

Related to recruiting, Montana State signed a total of zero recruits from Texas the last two classes (Messingham joined the staff in December 2015). Based on that, I'm not sure how you think NDSU will start pulling players out of there, though I for one really hope they start focusing resources on Texas. Polasek leaving also weakens NDSU's presence in Wisconsin, which is a bonus for UND.

Well, Messingham still has tons of experience compared to Polasek now. Polasek was only OC for one year, and only at one school.

I hope NDSU spends more time recruiting in Texas.  Sprinkle in a little Arizona while you're down there, as well.  ;)

I do as well. It's about finding the right kids when you go far out of your traditional recruiting area. Florida's been a goldmine for NDSU lately. Bruce Anderson, Tre Dempsey, Jaylaan Wimbush. I'd like to get back into Texas again. We had success there with Warren Holloway and D.J. McNorton.

I didn't watch much ndsu football the last couple years,  but I got a lot of texts/calls from people complaining about Polasek....

I wasn't as down on Polasek as most, but it's not like he's some offensive genius. I really like Messingham's experience. The NDSU offense really needs to find someway to push the ball down the field with the passing game.

  8. 19 minutes ago, jdub27 said:

Based on what? I don't see anything in his resume that screams that.

Polasek had 0 years experience coordinating at any level. Messingham has about 10, including for a quasi P5 team (it is Iowa State after all). I'm also excited about potentially recruiting Dallas/Ft. Worth, which is where he recruited for MSU. Like I said, at worse a wash, but I really think there's a better chance it's an upgrade.

With UND now with a conference title, playoff berth, and things looking up, NDSU better not slip up and lose out on the recruiting trail.

Cain mainly recruited out of the tri-state  area. I doubt the area Williams will be recruiting in are regions where you guys normally recruit. We will have to shift some responsibilities over for Wisconsin, since that was Polasek's main responsibility.

One would think NDSU could garner somebody a bit better after all the success (and money) they had.  The drop off in your defensive line coach is dramatic.  Your staff got worse at both positions.

Messingham's a grand slam hire. He'll be a wash to a slight improvement over Polasek. I know less about Williams. He'll need to pull in the recruits like Cain could. That will take a few years to evaluate.

In 2016 Montana State had a 4-7 record, won 2 games in the conference and whose offense scored the least in conference play and the second least overall (ISU scored the least). Good luck in Fargo.

What was Rudolph's record at Minot State before he came to the Hawks?

If Kolpack's numbers are to be believed, how is NDSU athletics relying on 60% more state funding than UND, yet UND is looking at making much more drastic cuts? (Hint - his numbers are off)

Or it could be UND's overall athletic budget is running a deficit. Not saying they are, but that is a possible explanation

  13. 1 hour ago, The Sicatoka said:

    Bismarck.

As jdub pointed out, State funds will be cut 20%.

That means NDSU Athletics has to find a way to shave roughly $1.32 million (20% of what they'd been getting) or some other part of NDSU will be asked to shave their 20% share plus Athletics' 20%.

Bismarck is sending a pot of money 20% smaller than before. How that's allocated will explain NDSU's priorities (as will it for UND).

But the pot of money that Bismarck sends to NDSU athletics is the roughly 2 million that Kolpack alluded to. Unless they're making them cut money allocated from tuition dollars.

I have no clue where Caillou gets his numbers (but I know where he got his education!!). Per USA Today, in 2015, NDSU got $6.6 million from direct institutional support out of their $22.3 million budget (29.4%). UND got $7.3 million of direct institutional support out of their $24.3 million budget (30.2%). So pretty close on that front. This doesn't include student fees, which UND relies heavier on and was approved by UND students in a vote. NDSU students rejected NDSU's athletic department to raise theirs last year, mostly due to how bad they botched their presentations. Because travel and equipment and stuff...

Using 2015 numbers (most recent available) and rough calculations, if the state funding is going to be cut around 20%, that means that UND and NDSU will have to come up with ways to shore up around $1.46 million and $1.32 million respectively for the athletic departments to take on their fair share of budget reductions. UND is doing what it needs to do and looking at cutting sports, mainly because they sponsor too many for their size at the D-1 level and can't possibly make them all competitive (and finally doing what they should have done a decade ago). NDSU obviously can't cut any sports if it wants to keep any hope at all for a move up or (at least the illusion of one) since the FBS requires 16, which NDSU currently sponsors, while FCS requires 14. NDSU's fundraising is up around $300K, which, assuming no other rising costs, still leaves around $1 million of what they hypothetically need, but that doesn't include any funding any of the FCOA. Maybe the Teammakers donations don't account for those funds but reading their releases, I have a hard time seeing how they wouldn't. Per the Forum article, apparently their budget for this year is slated to be less than it was in 2015, so it is possible they had done some reductions already to cover some of it but somehow the rest of the plan seems to be not hiring two positions that previously didn't even exist and that is going to bridge the shortfall. I am really confused on where the Forum got their data from, which actually make UND look better than they are. But looking at what is publicly available and seems to be more accurate, I guess I'm not following the numbers and have no clue how they make any sense but I'm sure now that the Forum did their "duty" and said there won't be any issues, it won't be brought up or questioned again.

You're including tuition dollars, Kolpack's number is what is directly appropriated from the state.  From what I understand, each university has flexibility in where they can appropriate their tuition dollars.

I'll sum up your post- "there is no grey area but the only grey area is.  They seem lax on it but it's not clearly defined. ".

If my username was was UNDgrad you wouldn't be coming back at me at all, but that's ok. I get it.

  16. 6 hours ago, homer said:

There is a lot of grey area.  It's not as cut and dry as you make it out to be either.  I had a conversation with one of NDSUs coaches after DeLuca got granted And they were fairly certain it was going to happen but couldn't 100% guarantee it would be granted.  There was a lot of work that went into making the decision to end his season after he wasn't needed anymore.

Not really.  The only gray area is what the NCAA determines to be a season ending injury, and like I stated before, they seem to be pretty lax on that qualification.

If his jersey was green and yellow I bet the NCAA gives him the green light to play. This is total !@#$.

    This statement is beyond ridiculous.

Or...leave it alone? The system works just fine.

FWIW, I don't think DeLuca should have gotten a redshirt,  he chose to shut his season down.  That rubs me the wrong way.

I think the NCAA is fairly lax on how they determine if an injury is keeping you from playing.  Case Keenum separated his shoulder the summer before his redshirt year and even though it probably really didn't keep him from playing it was enough for the school to claim that's why he took the redshirt.  In order to be granted a sixth year, you must miss two complete years (it's pretty clear how the NCAA defines a complete year) because of injury.

  19. The medical hardship are not as ambiguous as everybody seems to think they are.  Unless Clives George can prove his redshirt year at UA was because of injury, he won't be getting a medical hardship either.

  20. 37 minutes ago, Tangolou said:

Does that work if you play a freshman in a game and then decide to take him back out the rest of the year, or do you have to be injured?

There has to be an injury.  In Clive Georges case he will not be granted a 6th year unless during his "regular" redshirt year it was deemed he had an injury that left him unable to play.

  21. 27 minutes ago, jdub27 said:

He still has to apply and be granted a medical hardship since he appeared in games for 4 years, but it is very likely to be granted and much more likely than someone who is applying for a 6th year similar to what Clive Georges is trying to get granted. I did find it interesting that even though he knew he was going to have season ending surgery, he still played in the EWU game because even in doing so, he would still be under the 30% of games threshold.

This is correct.  Iowa was the third game of the year and the game he decided he would still play even though he was having the surgery.  Conincidentally, Izzo just tweeted his hardship was granted.

When I hear bison media types talking about next year, they all talk as if Deluca will be back next year.

    A. Isn't Deluca a senior?

    B. If he was senior this year, how do they      already know he will be granted a

Hardship? I thought they had to wait         until the end of the season to apply?

Deluca never took a redshirt and played in less than the maximum number of games to qualify.  There's  no gray area there.

Nodakhoops usually has a good eye for athletic ND kids.  I quoted one of his posts above, but it's from March, so some could've fallen off and others certainly could've played their way into getting noticed this past season.

hese might be some names to watch in ND.

    Tyrell Harris - Dickinson

Chase Teiken, Brandon Metz, Zac Willis  - West Fargo

    Colton Cook - Minot

    Hayden Reynolds- WF Shey

    Dillan Jepson - Killdeer

    Jackson Hankey - Park River

    Wyatt Carr - Hazen

    Calen Schwabe - Thompson

    Jake Ihland - Richland

    Cody Mauch - Hankinson

    Hofer Twins - Larimore

I can't comment on a lot of the names, but Metz and Willis are NDSU commits, and I believe Colton Cook is walking on at SDSU.  The lineman to watch for in the class of 18 is Logan Krueger out of Minot.

  24. Just took a quick peek at the Pepsi Rink. I was very pleasantly surprised. Much nicer than the the original renditions they had. That said it seats a it 1800, which is perfect for Minot, but wouldn't be enough to sustain a D1 hockey program.
