I have no experience other than being in both arenas...but I tend to think the new Pepsi rink at the MAYSA is nicer than the All Seasons.  Seating capacity is about the same, with nicer lighting and what not...plus it's in a better location than the All Seasons...but still...I'd think both are insufficient for a D1 hockey club...

Interesting. My son has hockey Saturday morning. I should try to check it out.

A club team doesn't bring enough revenue to justify All Seasons being open to Minot State's club.  Simple economics.

If the fair board still isn't open to a Minot State varsity team, massive criticism will result and the board will relent.

LOL. No. MSU used to play in the All Seasons.  The hockey people in Minot will insist MSU plays in the MAYSA. It just goes with the backwards thinking mentality that's pervasive in this town.

    3000 season tickets × 15 games × $ 30  / seat = $1.35 mill

They will have to get money from their Beaver Club, just like the Bizon do.

Or charge more in student fees.

So Lake Superior St is going to drop hockey because they don't have enough ticket sales to cover the cost of the Program?

It would be huge for the city of Minot if Minot St can go DI.  All Seasons Arena would have to offer open dates.  This isn't club hockey.

They haven't played at the All Seasons Arena due to the idiocy of the State Fair Board. They would play at the Maysa. I haven't been in the new rink yet but I think it holds about 1500.

There are major expenses the first year before a program starts.  Minot State just needs to show they can sell season tickets the first few years, as that practically guarantees break even.  An endowment should just be for an emergency, not continuous funding.

Minot State doesn't have any success in sports where fans actually attend games.   Hockey would draw even if they don't win.

Minot doesn't have an arena that could generate anywhere close to $3 Million in revenue annually.

The  ND SBOE would not impose criteria like Minnesota would.  Minot State already said they would have to raise like $6 mill, not $27 mill.  Six million is doable.

Dakota State is back in the North Star.  Neither Mary or Minot St have done anything in the NSIC.  They are like another Crookston or SW MN St.  Minot St envisions being like another Bemidji St.

I expect Ariz St and Simon Fraser to join the WCHA now, as that would create a western division where teams play 12 games against each other.  The rest of the WCHA would then only play one series against each of the western Teams, so they limit Alaskan trips to one per season.  Ariz St needs to be in an autobid situation for its program.  Once Ariz St gets its new rink, they will get an NCHC  offer.  The WCHA will need to replace ASU, and Minot may be the choice circa 2020.

Hedberg,  when he was still AD,  is on record stating it would take $3-$4 million annually to run a hockey program.  That would be a heck of a lot more than a $6 million endowment.

It imploded thanks to Minot State.  But the more widespread North Star Conference was later berthed.  Minot State effectively raised athletic costs at all smaller ND institutions.

U Mary and Dakota State left before Minot State.  The conference was on shaky ground with or without Minot State.  But back to the topic at hand, they have arena issues and would need an endowment similar to what MSU-M was proposing to even stand a chance to start a hockey program.

So why exactly did Minot St move to DII?  It doesn't buy much, except an outlet for a chance at DI hockey.  Throw hockey out the window, and Minot State just accrued more bills.

They had little choice.  The DAC was imploding and they were looking at life as an NAIA independent.  i think they thought going DII and being in a stable conference such as the NSIC would be a better alternative than what they were facing in terms of cost and perception.

Minot St has better potential facility access, All Seasons Arena, than what Arizona St has now.  Why can't Minot St be another Bemidji St?  Minot is much wealthier now than in the past and it has historically been a power ACHA program, which takes money. A major driver of DI hockey is decent existing facilities.  Even the dregs of the AHA are almost all upgrading to first class digs, when many thought that American International, Bentley, Holy Cross, and Sacred Heart would drop hockey.

Denver and CC might want more SW schools, but it also wants UND and Omaha.  Miami and W Mich are the odd men out, and they will have to get a new CCHA built.  Duluth and St Clown might be looking at the WCHA again, but further down the road.  UND is the class of DI hockey, and any western league would want us.

MSU club hockey plays in the MAYSA, which is a terrible facility to watch hockey.  I've heard the new addition is a little better, but still not great.

guarantee you that spear is still working to find 8 schools out west that want to revive the WAC FBS....and when people talk about all the extra schollies needed be too costly... if all eight schools agree to limit them to x amount of schollies (like the MAC does i think) it wouldn't be as expensive as people make it out to be...

The MAC does not impose football scholarship limits.

Case Keenum was injured his senior year, and redshirted his freshman year, he got a medical redshirt. I can see Clive getting it if he wants it, thats if he is out for season, which I assume yes, but we don't know for sure. As he missed a large chunk junior year as well.

I explained it poorly in my first post. Case Keenum lost two years of eligibility for reasons out of his control. That's how the NCAA defines it. If Clive can prove his initial redshirt year at UA was because of medical reasons then there's a chance he could get a 6th year, but like I said the NCAA granting 6th years is rare.

  11. Just now, NoDakFan said:

I thought you could still get a medical after a regular one.

DII yes. DI you 5 years to play 4. There's some exceptions, but that's basically the rule. Zach Vraa was granted a 6th year because the same injury kept him out for two years, but like I said 6th years are very rare.

If it's season ending, he can get a medical redshirt though, right?

Looking at his bio it looks like he redshirted at Arizona, so unfortunately his career would be over if he is out for the year.

Well, this thread has been quiet for a while. I guess I'll pull the pin and roll my own flash-bang in to so see what scrambles around. :D

    My scenario plays off SV's:

First, have UM, UI, MSU, and UND do the friendly takeover of the WAC (SV's "BSC/WAC schools swap") to get the magic wand to make FBS schools.

But to make that work you'd really have to make the next major move, namely, collapse the western part of the Summit/MVFC:

WAC Mountain: UM, UI, MSU, (two more west FB schools), Denver
WAC Plains: UND, NDSU, SDSU, USD, (one more east FB school), Omaha

There it is: 10 FB (FBS), 12 BB.

    • Half the schedule is by bus.
    • Strong rivals and strong schools.
    • This group would become the west's answer to the MAC.

And yeah, I'm the guy who used the phrase "lots of moving parts" before and this is a ton of them so I plainly admit this is out there. I just had to see how much this shakes the internet. :D

PS - I'd lobby to move the NCHC's administration into this "new WAC" administrative structure to save costs. (UND, DU, and UNO are NCHC core schools.)

I don't think this is out of the realm of possibility, but I think where the problem comes in is 1) finding two other western schools interested in FBS, and 2) getting the XDSU's (and possibly USD) to go along.

Mack Brown and a committee haven't finalized UTRGV's football plans yet.  Seems awfully strange that the new soccer stadium for the USL's Rio Grand FCS Toros suddenly isnt big enough even though it seats 9400.  The Houston Dynamo own that team so it's not like the USL team can go MLS.  Why else would Edinburgh plan to expand it to 24k but for FBS?

They're not expanding the stadium, they just sold the naming rights for a renovation.  All the mayor of Edinburgh said if UTRGV decides to add football they would love to accomodate them and expand to 24k.  This link is a couple of weeks old but I couldn't find anything more up to date.

Apparently, Edinburgh TX is going to expand their minor league soccer stadium to 24 k seats, which is not needed for their soccer team.  Sounds like a possible FBS team and stadium for UTRGV.

No word yet on the league that will give Wichita St a shot at FBS.

They're not expanding their stadium until UTRGV decides what they're going to do, and that front hasn't been too active for a while.  I just don't know why anybody would start a G5 program right now, unless they can be heavily subsidized.

NDSU must be getting paid a ton of money to restrict their exposure so much. I'm curious how big the contract is.

Dumb move to block two of your biggest fanboys in the media.

Football with KVLY is worth about 400k a year. I'm not sure what Midco paid for basketball or what the radio rights are.

I understand that; however, the combination of "we can't maintain what we have" (linked article) with "hey, we want to build more" won't play well with many in the Legislature.

No I get it.  And I think pretty much every university across the country could realize substantial savings by cutting administration, but at the same time if a university seriously shows a need for improved facilities (e.g. UND's medical school) the state has a responsibility to fund it.

  18. 25 minutes ago, The Sicatoka said:

How about maintaining what you have before adding in more that won't be maintained?

Two completely different funding sources.  North Dakotas' universities can't bond for academic buildings or maintenance on those buildings.  Dorms are self sustaining sources of revenue.

UND has room for a pharmacy school right now.  NDSU can have music therapy in exchange for pharmacy.  Sounds like the legislature would agree.

I've always thought it would make sense to move the school of mines (and it's associated programs) to NDSU and pharmacy to UND.  Seems like more of a natural fit for both institutions.

On Wednesday, Idaho will seek approval for Idaho's Board of Education for a football move to the Big Sky.  The meeting will be at Bronco Stadium in one of their fancy suites, so Boise St fans will be gloating for a week and Idaho St fans will be happy that Idaho voluntarily took themselves down to their level.

But I still think this is all a ruse, and Idaho is only doing this for the political points with the Board.  In a week or more, the Big Sky will announce that it is considering swapping schools with the WAC.  Idaho will have no choice but to go with the Montana schools.  Idaho St cannot move to FBS because their second to BYU in their part of the state and don't have alumni support.  The Idaho Board will not begrudge Idaho for moving, after all the Board approved of the Big Sky and it's schools.

Idaho will still say staying in FBS will only happen with an increase in donations, which the alumni will oblige.

It will be a brilliant public relations move by Staben, and his Idaho St and Boise St board members will not find fault with his decisions although he was playing with them all the time.

Bizon and Jack trolls will be sick and despondent again.

This is seriously some impressive work.

  21. I think a big issue is what to do with the current WAC members.  They would have to 1) agree to admit 6-8 new football playing members from the Big Sky.  These additions may or may not have the same philosophies regarding DI athletics as the current members; 2) possibly agree to leave the WAC (see the latter part of statement 1) and join the Big Sky.  This would require the current basketball playing members of the WAC to unilaterally agree to kick themselves out of their current conference and would also require the remaining members of the Big Sky who will still be playing FCS football to invite a bunch of non-football schools, who may or may not  have the same philosophies regarding DI athletics as the current members.  It would take a political genius to make that work, but its possible.
