  1. ESPN said last year that NDSU got another gameday because they earned it, which is pretty hard to argue. If ESPN wants to give NDSU another gameday, this would be a perfect time to do it. I will probably be in Fargo that weekend anyway, but if gameday is there, I'll definitely make it.

Alabama and Ole Miss play on the 19th.  Could be pretty hard to compete with that.

  2. Its the Langdon Area Cardinals. Several other small schools in Cavalier County have consolidated before.

I believe at a minimum Langdon Area would consist of at least parts of the following school districts:  Alsen, Milton, Osnabrock, Hannah, and Wales.

  3. While mindlessly browsing the internet came across these games on youtube that documents Edmore's run to the state championship game in 1982.  Some of the players mentioned in previous posts are playing in these games.  First link is vs. Munich in Region 3 championship game.  The next three are the state tournament games vs. Anamoose, McVille, and Divide County, in that order.

  4. Some of the Bison posters can chime in but I think the MVFC and Summit Leagues both have deals with ESPN3. All of UNDs home games for football and basketball would be on Midco or FSN like now and if the majority of road games are on ESPN3 I don't see much difference to BigSkyTV. Another thing would be UND would get more coverage on midco as I think they have a Summit League show every week along with summit basketball games on Wednesdays and Saturdays (i think) so we'd actually probably see more road games broadcasted right on Midco. Just a guess, but I'd imagine anytime we'd play USD or SDSU on the road in any sport it would be broadcasted on Midco.

While I agree BigSkyTV is awesome I think UND would actually gain more coverage in the MVFC/Summit. BigSkyTV is great, but i'll take ESPN3 over that, if they do have that deal. I'll also take the regional/national exposure the UND/NDSU football game gives the State/University every year and gives Grand Forks every other year when they host.

I have no idea if there is a formal agreement between those conferences and ESPN3 to air games, but a quick look shows 7 of 16 NDSU conference basketball games on ESPN3 and all but 2 of the regular season conference football games.  All the football playoff games and the Summit League tournament were on ESPN3. It would be awesome to get more content online, especially now that I joined the technology age and got a Roku. :)

  5. Do you know anything about Austin Lee from Berthold? I've never seen him play, and have no idea what level of college basketball he might be able to play, but I've heard he might be one of those under-the-radar types who could potentially end up being pretty good. I believe he shared the region player of the year award with Heidlebaugh, but I'm not certain on that.

Not a Division 1 player.  Fun as hell to watch in high school though.  Hear he might go to BSC and play baseball and basketball.

  6. Hmm, got me NDSU grad. I'm very curious about that too. Anybody got any idea?

I know the 93 team was arguably the best in school history and had a very good chance of winning it all, but I believe the 94 team still made the postseason and had Chris Gardner, Todd Johnson, and Travis Tuttle on it.

  7. When I say decent, I mean. Something in the first 15 rows. I'm getting old and with a lot of pre-game festivities I don't like going up that many stairs. I also agree that the majority of Bison fans have wanted this game back for a long time. It's a great time, and it's great for the host city.

If you are able to get a ticket for this game for 75, then I would grab it quickly, no matter where the seat is.

There won't be single game tickets available in the first 15 rows.  You'll have to find somebody willing to give up season tickets.  I'm thinking it would take $200-300/ticket, possibly more.

  8. UND finishes out the season with a home attendance average of 1,700.  That is the 2nd lowest average attendance for a season in the history of the program, or at least for the years I can find data for.  Only 2012-13 was worse.

    Attendance Wiki

That's an interesting link.  Why the huge drop from 93 to 94?  If I remember right, you guys still had a very good team in 94 even though you lost Guldseth and Jacobson from the year before, right?  It looks like other than that huge drop in one year, attendance has been relatively stable as long as you guys fielded good teams.

  9. Speaking of youth hockey, my son (8 years old) wants to join hockey. I have heard it's expensive and very time consuming. There are two leagues he could join this upcoming fall/winter a recreation league or a travel league. Travel league is more competitive but they travel in a 100 mile radius of Fargo (I wouldn't mind a trip to GF) so we are leaning towards the recreation league just to get his feet wet as he just learned to skate and is now in love with the sport. Can anyone shine the light on the truth/ myth about it being expensive and time consuming?

It's expensive and time-consuming.  My 5 year old is just in an initiation program in Minot, but I have friends whose kids are in the pee-wee level.  They're travelling overnight 10-12 weekends a season during USA Hockey season.  One friend has his kid on a summer team and they're playing about 6 tournaments from May thru August; all out of town.  They're also practicing ~ 3 times a week and playing tournaments/games in Minot pretty much every weekend they're not travelling.

  10. ok...so Carpio was the Cardinals, Donnybrook was the Hi-Liners, what was Tolley?

Tigers. Played in what was literally a Quonset attached to the school. So narrow the three point line didn't extend to the baseline. I think Tolley last had team in 86, Donnybrook in 87, Lansford in 90, and Carpio in 91 (know that one for sure). I think Sherwood survived until the late 90's/early 2000's.
  11. Yeah, my old District 22 of Des Lacs-Burlington, Berthold, Surrey, Sawyer, Velva, and Granville is long gone...Deering even managed to have a team up to 1984 I believe.

Interestingly, with the exception of Deering, there is still a high school in every one of those towns.  Granville is part of TGU, though, and does not field it's own sports teams.  My old district, 24, is down to 3 teams:  Mohall, Kenmare, and Glenburn, out of the original 8.

  12. Even though after football and men's basketball NDSU sports are horrid (major sports only not T&F, or softball), where at UND the only major sports suffering is football and men's basketball. Football actually saw an increase of wins (more than one), for the first time since the 2011 season, men's basketball hasn't had an increase of wins (more than 1 game) since going 19-15 in the 2010-2011 season after winning just 8 the year before.  Last year UND had 1 more win than the year before, so in the past 3 seasons (2011-12 through 2013-14) UND's increase of wins is ZERO!! Jones is consistant on thing.....being .500!!! In that 19-15 season (Jones's best) UND won 4 games against non DI competition, went 0-8 in OOC road games,  (0-9 if you include Air Force in the CIT).  I know this was in the middle of transition but if someone brings up his best season, look at the numbers closely and see how watered down they are. (just like Muss's 2011 season)

The only NDSU program suffering right now is women's basketball, and that's a stretch calling it a major sport.

  13. The numbers say BYU and the rumors say Memphis.  FedEx is supposedly sponsoring the Big 12 CCG for Big Bucks in Memphis.

So does the American back fill to stay with 11 or add 3 to go 12?  I presume they go after C-USA schools, but looking at that list of schools it doesn't look very attractive.

  14. The Big 12 generates $220 million from their Tier 1 (and Tier 2 I think) contracts.  The national contract would have to increase by $44 million if two teams are added, so the other schools don't get diluted.  Texas has its own Longhorn Network (Tier 3) that pays only Texas like over $20 mill a year.  The rest of the Big 12 want Texas to convert that to a Big 12 Network, with Texas still getting the bulk of it depending on cable and satellite revenue.

The two new schools would have to add $44 mill to the national TV contracts.  But keep in mind just adding a CCG nets almost $24 mill, so each school essentially has to add $10 mil in value.  The American (UConn, Cincy, Memphis etc) only pays out $2 mill a team, so the hurdle for those schools can be met if their networks deem that P5 status elevates the value of Cincy or Memphis that much.  The Big 12 could also negotiate a longer contract, but the big money schools probably wouldn't like that.  Getting P5 status for a G5 school is like getting a major annuity.  Utah, TCU, and Louisville can upgrade their facilities much more easily now.

That makes sense.  Their tier 1 contracts are ABC and Fox, correct?  So I would presume this would be a case where market is the number one priority for expansion.  I would think Cincy is a shoe-in.  Who's the 12th?

  15. On KFAN this morning I heard them say that any new team needs to show they generate 22 million dollars in revenue before they get an invitation to the Big 12.  They based that on what each team is getting via the new TV contract.

Interesting.  So that would be ticket sales, advertising, and revenue generated from potential TV viewers?  Crap, does Iowa State fit that criterion?

  16. Then why would he write it?  He must have thought about it and obviously didn't completely dismiss it?  NDSU fans seem to "not be serious" alot on message boards about their FBS chances.

Condensed version.  ONE poster said NDSU could make a strong case due to sports offered, geographic footprint, and academics, but the state of ND would have to get behind NDSU big time and that would never happen.  Another poster asked him if he was serious and he said no, that basically his point was that even if a conference like the Big 12 was interested it would take a gigantic investment from the state for it to happen and that's impossible.  My main point was that there is not anybody on Bisonville claiming NDSU has a shot at Big 12 membership.  Nobody. Zero, Zilch, Zamboni.

  17. For a good belly laugh, go to Bville, where they think FU has a good shot of Big 12 membership. Their reasoning is that ISU and KSU would support a fellow.land grant and have their football respect! If only the state of ND would get behind them and build a new campus near Wayzata. The MVC won't look at them but the Big 12 would!

Nobody on Bisonville thinks the Big XII is a possibility.  The one guy who talking hypothetically about it even admitted he wasn't serious.

  18. Arrogant, condescending jerk. Surprised kids at NDSU don't demand the $81,000 per year isn't turned into scholarships. This is one of the reasons some of the taxpayers want to take control of Higher Ed away from the SBoHE. I wouldn't trust this guy to haul out my garbage. I wonder if his gopher does that for him or he has another person hired to do that. If he can't drive he probably can't haul out his own garbage.

He's actually been exactly the opposite of that in my dealings with him.  Always has time to talk, and is very pleasant.  And believe me, I am far from being a big deal. :p

  19. Looks like a good call.

When I originally posted that I was thinking a 10-2 regular season with a semi-final or national championship game appearance.  At this point I hope I under-estimated the win total.  I didn't really watch many of your games this year, but from the sounds of things you guys were what I thought you'd be.  Some good wins, 'good' losses, some wtf moments, and overall a marked improvement from the last few years.

  20. The Big Sky app / Big Sky TV shows that the conference has the infrastructure to produce games and get them where they need to be (internet or satellite up link). If ESPN can get content for little to no investment it'll catch their eye.

But do all Big Sky venues have the capability to showcase a game the way ESPN wants it to be viewed, i.e. HD cameras, multiple camera angles, etc.?  I'm guessing ESPN will bring their own crew and equipment to Washington-Grizzly Stadium next year, so the investment will be the same as if they were going anywhere else.

  21. FCS Playoff picture getting interesting going into the final weekend...

Montana has 4 losses going into Bozeman. Would they be included in the playoffs if they lose to MSU? If they win, both MSU and the Grizzlies should be in the playoffs.

Idaho State has 4 losses (Utah, Utah State, Eastern Washington and Montana State) heading into Weber. The Bengals should make the playoffs with a win.

Northern Arizona now has 4 losses heading to Cedar City to take on Southern Utah. If all three of these teams win, would 5 Big Sky teams be invited to the. Playoffs? If not, who would be left out? (if the Grizzlies lose to MSU, they will probably not make it)

In the MVFC, Northern Iowa has 4 losses. They are playing Missouri State. South Dakota State plays South Dakota. Indiana State plays Western Illinois. The one With the toughest opponent next weekend is Youngstown State, who play NDSU. So the MVFC could have a 4 loss team left out of the playoffs as well.

If all the "favorites" win next weekend, Eastern Washington, Montana State, Idaho State and Northern Arizona would all have 4 losses or less on the season; and in the MVFC, the selection committee would have NDSU, Illinois State, Northern Iowa, SDSU, and Indiana State in the same situation. If Montana beats Montana State and/or Youngstown beats NDSU, add one to each conference. Guessing that a max of 4 from each conference gets playoff invites, there could be as many as 3 teams between these 2 conferences that watch the playoffs with 4 losses on the season.

UND still has a ways to go to join this group, but yesterday showed that Coach Schweigert has the team headed in the right direction. Even Rudolph's play calling didn't look so bad with short fields given to the offense by a great defense and Garman having the great game he had. Maybe a little too conservative with the lead and only 11 pass attempts, but it worked. They can finish this year anywhere from tied for 7th in the conference to tied for last (both would require Davis beating Sacramento), pending the outcome of the Northern Colorado game, which now feels very winnable.

Idaho State has two DII wins.  They're out.  Montana's out if they lose, both Montana and MSU are probably in if the Griz win.  Northern Arizona has some terrible losses this year.  It will be interesting to see what the committee does if it comes down to a 4 loss Valley team or NAU.
