Broke his collarbone in his first game his RS-Freshman year. It healed up and he was set to come back later in the season and broke his other one in practice the week he was supposed to come back. They both happened in the same season.

Nope. He broke his collarbone in two different seasons. In practice his true freshman season. 1st game his second season. That’s about the only way you can get a sixth year in D1.

Peyton Lotysz could be one of those guys. He’s got a really wide frame. If he plays like his dad he could be the badass we need as an anchor.

Saw Peyton play one time.  Looked more like an o-lineman I thought.  But I think he will be really good on that side of the ball.

Here's a question that I know the answer to, but I'll ask anyway:

Zimmerman redshirted at EWU in 2015.
He went to a JC in 2016.
He appeared in four games for UND in 2017.
He appeared in six games for UND in 2018.

He's only appeared in three games in 2019 before he went down with an injury.

Any chance he could get a sixth year of eligibility? (I know, I know, slim and none and slim left town. Sixth years are like double-eagles in golf.)

That said, it would be nice to have another QB that knows the system next year.

Otherwise it's Schuster, Grover, and gut ache.

He would have had to miss his 2015 year (the original redshirt year) due to injury.  That's the most common way 6th years are granted.  That's how Zach Vraa was awarded one anyway.

Defending champion Minot State is the preseason#1 ACHA DI club team according to the rankings.  Jamestown is #17.

Minot State just moved their women’s team to DI in club.  Think both U Mary and Minot St will both move their clubs to varsity when the WCHA breaks up.  If Bemidji State can, why not Minot?

    http://achahockey.org/view/achahockey/acha-hockey-news/news_525282

I think Minot State could pull that off if they dropped football.  That would be a hard sell in the community.

Satter is a great kid  but PWO at either school.  (Because of position he plays) UND offers to force SU's hand on legacy recruit.  It's that simple. And how the game is played. Satter Family can thank UND.

I agree with this. I thought Balvitch was the better RB for Davies last year. Maybe he’ll develop into a stud but right now looks like a reach.

In another thread, figures showed that Williston micro area has grown by over 50% in eight years.  That’s rather substantial growth for an old agricultural state, many times larger than Fargo’s or Sioux Fall’s impressive growth rates.  Never remember stating Williston would be that large in 10-15 years, but did say Midland-Odessa-could be a good match for Williston’s eventual size and that Midland-O area is about that size right now.  But the chemical industry does not choose to build much at Midland-Odessa as its too dry and little water.  Houston has been the main city that has grown because of the Permian Basis via chemicals and plastics.  Williston’s area growth will be much larger if chemical and plastics plants come in, as happened at Edmonton, which is also Alberta’s capitol.

Midland-Odessa used to be the equivalent of Tioga-Stanley before oil was discovered, and now it has more than 300k.

Probably should state that Williston in fact means Williston-Watford City-Killdeer-Stanley-Tioga.

If oil drilling is further improved or oil prices go higher, it could include a larger area like Crosby and Burke County and more southern Bakken areas.

Killdeer?  It’s 100 miles from Williston to Killdeer. That would be like including Devils Lake in Minot’s population growth.

Is Pepsi Rink expandable?  Minot St, Mary, and Crookston would be better of as NAIA or DIII teams if it wasn’t for the fact that a DII can offer DI hockey.  Their losing in all other sports could be overcome by a DI hockey program.  But all three would probably need WIH too.

Pretty sure it would be cost prohibitive to expand. Bound in on one side by the rest of the complex, and Burdick Expressway and Highway 2/52 Bypass on two other sides. It’s a nice little arena though.

  8. 10 hours ago, SiouxVolley said:

Crookston would probably have the most financial hurdles of the above, but Crookston does have a state built arena now, but they should add women’s lax rather than WIH.  Mary and Minot St are inevitable.  UST would probably be snatched by the NCHC if they get off to a good start.  Augie could be a formidable hockey school if they really wanted it.

Minot St. would support D1 hockey, but they would need a lot of private donor money and institutional funds if they really wanted to compete.  The new Pepsi Rink only holds about 1800; they could fill that up most nights with a D1 schedule but that obviously limits the revenue potential.

Count me among the uninitiated and generally disinterested, but isn’t curling in danger of extinction due to the scarcity of the stone traditionally used? Real Sports did a story on this a few years back, and it painted a bleak portrait of the future. Apparently there are shockingly few natural or synthetic alternatives.

I think that's maybe just for the stones used at the Olympics.  The stones we use in Minot are decades old.  I don't know if the NCAA would have tighter specs and they would have to be replaced more often but I don't think it would be a huge concern.

And I would definitely be all in on curling being an NCAA sanctioned sport.

I was told all but three or four kids reside in the RR district.

For those outside of Grand Forks who don't know the policy, basically anybody in town can petition to go to Central, and with very few exceptions it will be approved. But you have to reside in the RR district to go to RR, with a few exceptions for cases where a family moves into the Central district and an older sibling is already at RR.

It tends to be a mixed blessing for Central. Obviously it works great for boys hockey, and some of the sports hockey players tend to play, such as tennis, golf and soccer. But what doesn't get talked about as much is the fact that the traditional Central parts of town simply don't produce many athletes anymore, which in my opinion is a direct result of the privatization of youth sports pricing out a lot of families. If the policy were to all of a sudden change and kids from the RR district weren't allowed to go to Central anymore, or even if an unpopular coach were to take over at Central, they would go from being the biggest hockey power in the state, to struggling to even field a team.

Girls sports at Central tend to really struggle relative to RR, because very few girls from the RR district are choosing to go to Central, in some cases even if their older hockey-playing brother is already at Central. There pretty much couldn't be a bigger disparity between girls basketball at Central and RR right now, and Central hasn't beaten RR in volleyball since about 1997.

In my opinion, things would be more or less equal between Central and RR across the board if Grand Forks would alter the boundaries so that South Middle School stays entirely in the RR district, Schroeder becomes entirely within the Central district, and Valley is split, with the westerly half of the Valley district going to RR. Since most of the athletes in town at present are coming from South and the southerly portion Schroeder, i.e. the RR portion of the Schroeder district,  RR is at a major advantage in most respects, other than boys hockey and the two or three fall and spring sports those kids tend to play.

Something I find somewhat interesting is how strong Central has become in wrestling.  They can't really compete with the west teams but there's no eastern teams that can.  It seems they have a coach who is really trying to build a culture there.  Maybe wrestling resonates more with that demographic, or perhaps its because wrestling is probably an order of magnitude less expensive to play as a youth compared to hockey?

So what’s the equivalent call now?  Or can you just blow people up from behind to get a rebound?  Asking for a friend.;)

As other people have said pushing us drill called. It’s also crazy how the rules of traveling have changed. You can basically change pivot feet in certain circumstances now.

Dont even get me started on the ‘arc’ rules.

Loved officiating too.  Was a year away from doing some local club hockey lines.  The worst part was parents coming up to me after the games questioning the rules and me having to explain that USA hockey makes the rules and we abide by them.

After a while I just got the officiating rule book AP USA hockey created and would pull up the rule so they could see it.

The best is when basketball parents start screaming ‘over the back’, which isn’t even a thing in basketball now.

Minot is in discussions to decide about how to proceed with their High Schools.  A split may happen rather soon (technically it is already split, but not a traditional one.)

    http://www.minotdailynews.com/opinion/editorials/2018/11/creative-problem-solving-needed-to-address-minot-school-challenges/

School districts in ND have arbitrary boundaries which makes it more difficult to annex land from one to the other unlike cities do with rural land.  Formerly rural District 8 outside Williston is growing rapidly, now with 660 students grades K-8.  But that district continues to funnel students to Williston HS.  As it keeps growing, either a merger or new District 8 HS will happen.

    https://www.willistonherald.com/news/enrollments-up-in-district-district/article_76dbd5c8-b60f-11e8-a470-53d4242b710d.html

If a bond vote is required to build a new high school in Minot it will never happen. The downtown parking garage disaster will forever be in the back of peoples’ minds. The community simply does not trust any form of government to be good stewards with their money, and for good reason.

Many of Watford City residents have corporate jobs at nat gas plants.  Far from transient as in the old oil boom days.  Some people are building houses intending to stay.  And those jobs will only increase as more are constructed and operated.  Watford City HS has the best facilities in the state with the convention center and hockey arena complex right next door.

Minot has Nedrose and South Prairie HIgh Schools near its city limits now too, but those are not big enough for Class A but could be in the future.  Minot is stubborn about keeping its two HS campuses for two years each.

I hope you're right on Watford City.  It would be fun to have another competitive team in all sports in the WDA.  As to Minot, Nedrose has greater potential for increased growth relative to South Prairie.  Many of the younger grades at Nedrose have 50-60 kids per grade, so that would put them at a fairly large class b school.  South Prairie's younger grades are sitting at ~30 kids, but the problem with South Prairie is I could see a scenario where the southern neighborhoods ask to be annexed to Minot Public because of convenience.  That could hurt South Prairie's potential growth.

Watford City is now Class A and is still growing fast.  But with West Fargo getting another HS, you need more western cities to add HS’s or other Class B towns to rise up for Jamestown to get back in the east again.  Maybe if Heart River kept their coop and went Class A, instead of dividing back into their constituent schools of Belfield and South Heart, Jamestown could be with Valley City again.  More eastern schools like Central Cass are continuing to grow which would force it up to “A”, messing with Jamestown’s dream of being an EDC school again.

Minot would be the most likely to add another high school, but it won't happen within the next seven years.  Watford City is going to struggle mightily in Class A, as their increased enrollment doesn't translate into greater participation numbers for sports.  The population is just too transient,  I seriously feel really bad for them.

Just how large is Doug Burgum's fortune?   I thought when Great Plains was sold to Microsoft, Doug's brother had a larger stake in Great Plains than Doug did?  His brother (name escapes me) is a UND Grad and on or was on the UND foundation board.  Might see an on campus stadium in GF before a new one in FGO???

You're thinking of Rick.  That's Doug's cousin, not brother.  And yes, his stake in Great Plains was larger than Doug's.

This is a case where many states will roll with NJ and open it up. ND is going to have to choose to either Take a moral stand against gambling ( a shakey at best and hypocritical stand) or try and monitize it the best they can, as quick as they can.

I would bet the tribes are going to capitalize quickly in the casinos.. although mayne they already so, I dont know its been ages since I was in one.

Never seen a sports book in a reservation casino. But you’re right, I bet this gives them an in into establishing them.

Then what numbers is Kennedy using?

Kennedy's talking about percentage of the total budget from state dollars.  Even though UND receives more dollars from the state, their total budget (basically state money + tuition) is also greater than NDSU's, resulting in a smaller portion of that budget coming from state money.

  19. 1 minute ago, jdub27 said:

He never claimed UND received less money, he claimed they received a smaller percentage of their revenue from the state, which are two different things. On top of that, a 2015 budget isn't going to show what actually happened over the biennium in terms of actual revenues and breakdown of where they came from.

If you're referring to what President Kennedy, you're absolutely correct.  I was responding to Darrell, who claimed Bison fans whine about UND receiving more money from the state legislature, which they do in absolute dollar amounts.  And I also agree about using old numbers; in my quick search I couldn't find appropriations for 17-19, although I presume numbers were adjusted down in a similar fashion for all NDUS institutions.

Did I see that Watford City is going Class A in sports?

Remaining AA in football. They’re going to have difficulty competing in the WDA in most sports right away. Hopefully they can become competitive as time goes on.
