I may be best remembered as one of Andy's biggest critics. After our first loss this year I was commenting how our biggest problem seems to be goaltending -- Andy often doesn't look comfortably positioned and sometimes seemed a little surprised to find himself in the way of the puck. That said, I still think he's probably our best goaltender. It's a tough adjustment coming off years of record-setting Goehring & Schweitzer.
  2. Playing the big boys doesn't even seem to lead to extra losses. This year we swept Michigan and Mich State in the GLI, and swept St Lawrence. Without those wins, or with wins against lower tier teams, there would truly be no bright spots to the season.
  3. It took me a while to actually read the article because all morning the link just returned an error from the GF Herald site (sigh). I agree that the Grand Forks Herald's coverage is absolutely ludicrous.
  4. http://www.grandforks.com/mld/grandforks/2620854.htm The entire point of the article seems to be that he now has Sioux-colored pads in, but at least it's GF Herald online coverage of the Sioux

  8. SCSU's protest is now the lead story at ncaa.org. The article itself is at: http://www.ncaa.org/news/2002/20020121/active/3902n24.html The article indicates that the NCAA plans to release some sort of report/recommendation in October on the issue of Native American mascots.

  10. Third group announced: Includes two from UND: Tony Hrkac (F, 1984-87) Bill Steenson (D, 1956-59) Previously
  11. The schedule is rather favorable. We always step it up for Minnesota (including a split earlier in the season). We play Tech 4 times -- hopefully we'll pick up SOME points there. And 2 games against Duluth, the #10 team. Of course, they might be viewing us as their opportunity for a win or two, also. And, we end the season hosting Denver at REA. We can dream, can't we?
  12. A sweep by Tech this weekend would give them a tie with UND for 8th. Personally, I think this is the weekend that UND pulls out some points. (Keep in mind that UND has played two more games than Tech). I did notice in the full WCHA standings that despite having similar records, UND has a much higher scoring offense than Tech.
  13. One of the more succinct and sound arguments I've seen on the "don't change American Indian team names" side. I'll include the portion that the NCAA has quoted in the below link: http://www.ncaa.org/news/2001/20010423/comment.html
  14. I tried out the AdSubtract SE product. It seems to remove not only the lone ad, but also the title banner from the SiouxSports.com hockey home page. Clearly I'm going to have to figure out how to defeat this insidious software
  15. An interesting story some of you may not yet have seen from the Boston Herald. http://www.bostonherald.com/sport/college/hock12102001.htm The new "regional" tournament suggestion has already started to affect seedings.
  16. Yeah, some of those dropped passes throughout the game scared me (not to mention the punts and field goal attempts). I suppose the wet weather had something to do with it, but we came through in the end. That 4th down play on the final TD drive was nerve-racking (not to mention the last 10 secs of defense).
  17. Oh, I'm all for giving the kid a chance. He could easily be better than any of UND's goaltenders (I'm sure many of you remember how bad I thought UND's goalies looked at the very beginning of the season). I'm just saying that I think UND's problems go well beyond goaltending. Bad goaltending doesn't lead to a shutout. Bad goaltending can lead to you losing 4-6, not 0-6. Of course, a change between the pipes can have a very inspirational effect on the rest of the time (like changing QBs). It could be a catalyst to get other players to play up to their potentials, as many here have speculated.
  18. I don't think UND can blame goaltending alone for just being a mediocre team. I suspect that the Sioux will find themselves sorely disappointed that bringing a club goalie up to D-1 doesn't turn the team around. http://216.221.101.55:591/daily....1&-Find
  19. By my list, 29 was only used twice: Duane Hagness, 46-47 James Doyle, 47-48 Of course, I could be missing an entry or my list could be incorrect, but I did check pretty carefully. Going through the photo archives, there were names on the "North Dakota" jerseys at some point in time. Of course, that doesn't mean that there wasn't also a point when there weren't names.

  21. Well, SCSU has backed off the lunacy a little bit. The student government voted to rescind its rule that newspapers using the Fighting Sioux nickname would face disciplinary action. Technically the paper is university owned, and therefore doesn't enjoy freedom of the press protection against university censorship (the university can rescind their student organization status). However, telling newspapers what they can and cannot print has to cause much internal conflict among the PC crowd. http://www.universitychronicle.com/main.cf....=144553
  22. The NCAA did establish precedent for trying to dictate sensitivity when it removed all NCAA tournaments from the state of South Carolina while they're flag contained a symbol that African Americans deemed offensive (a flag of the Confederacy). Without that precedent, I wouldn't be concerned at all. As is, Sicatoka is right -- the NCAA could never credibly order just UND to change because SCSU is upset. Rather, they would have to either dictate or suggest that all NCAA schools not have cultures be mascots. Again, it's tough to draw the line, though: if Indian names are out, what about Fighting Irish (there are still Irishmen)? Then you could go down to ANYTHING cultural like Cowboys or Vikings. If UND were the only Indian-mascot school, I think they could be in trouble from an NCAA resolution. As is, Florida State and Illinois will fight the battle. Of course, Florida State has the ace in the hole that they have current approval from the tribes, whereas UND has been unable to get a consensus approval.
  23. As an article in today's GF Herald points out, the timing is odd since the original article refers to resolutions that were passed last March. Why no protests when they play our football or volleyball teams? It seems not to be people genuinely concerned, rather people who like to have their names in the news. Also interesting, I thought, was that the WCHA did take the matter up and voted 9-1 to table it last Spring (guess who was the lone dissenter?) http://web.northscape.com/content....UND.htm
  24. I remember from going to games at St Cloud in the past that they always refer to UND as "North Dakota" and never make mention of the name "Sioux". I have also heard before that SCSU has requested that UND wear jerseys without the Sioux logo while playing there. Doesn't seem likely. http://miva.sctimes.com/miva....31+2+16
