I'm still figuring out how it all works and will be adding more of the tie-breakers, but here's some raw data on regional ranking estimation. Barring any major errors, looks like UND should be 5th-7th (my personal guess would be that Winona gets the bump above UND for the perfect DII record but Ferris St doesn't for just having played an extra game, putting UND in 6th). Next weekend's game will clearly have huge regional ranking implications.

Though the Sioux D did collapse in the 2nd quarter, this was definitely an offensive loss. Though calling back that late TD probably wasn't a great call by the officials, that's part of the game. The Sioux had numerous chances to score on offense and failed. If any of the errant passes to wide-open receivers had been on target, that could have been the go ahead TD. The Sioux offense made frequent enough errors that they couldn't string together enough successful plays to score frequently. Hats off to SCSU on their best start ever -- there's some new room at the top of the NCC

SCSU -5 yds total offense in the 3rd. The coaches sure came through on my hope that they would be able to adjust the D at the half.
-
Just let the half end without another SCSU TD and the team needs to regroup at the half and figure out how to stop Birkel. The Sioux run D simply isn't this porous, they need to figure out what they're doing wrong and make some adjustments. Look at it this way -- this is a smaller lead than we gave SCSU at half-time last year

Belmore to Caleb Johnson TD pass. Sioux strike first. Audio link is working great.

Excellent, I certainly wasn't trying to question your source so much as ask how much you could tell me about the details of what you knew. I'll recode my SSI calc to incorporate the I-AA blacklist instead of whitelist (as I had before) and see how the numbers come out. I'm sure I'll be in touch with you later by PM or email for some help, regardless, seeing as how you've done this before

Even I can field this one. The first post in and whole point of the existence of this thread was an interview in which RT was asked, "do you see a move to Division I in the future?" and he responded: That's why we're talking about the possibility of UND investigating a move to DI, because the Athletic Director said they are. If you think it's not a worthwhile topic for discussion, don't discuss it; no need to admonish us.

I've actually been struggling with this because by my calculations Winona St. and C-N are ranked unreasonably high in the latest regionals (both, of course, have lost to provisional I-AA's). My first thought was something about changes to SSI, but I've been using the same 2004 SSI that's been on the NCAA site for a while now: 2004 Division II SSI (this seems to be the same numbers you were talking about). That then got me wondering about whether I was undercrediting games against SDSU/NDSU for SSI; e.g. they could still be considered D-II or be considered auto-qualifying/independent: In the football participants list, the NCAA site indicates that NDSU & SDSU are currently considered D-II independents in the NW region. I don't see anything, though, that indicates that SDSU would be considered to be an independent or from a qualifying conference. The 2003 D-II manual (p.12) outlines what a qualifying conference is and I don't see how NDSU/SDSU would be included in that group? (I can't find an update to that either by searching or from the NCAA football championships page an update to that handbook). So, do you know something I don't?

Yeah, it said "single game". I suspect this is an attempt to boost attendance to utilize the new facilities (though the conspiracy theorists could take it as an ominous indicator about season ticket sales). It makes sense to try to fill the facility, get some new fans accustomed to hitting basketball games, and raise the visibility of the sport.

There were certainly hints of that in RT's interview quoted above. He went out of his way to point out that our conference now more than ever contains schools whose athletics resemble UND's. The biggest difference between our athletic department and those schools that left the NCC is that hockey is our #1 sport (both in fans and revenue); as RT said, UND is in a little bit different spot since our #1 sport is already DI. Clearly any talk of UND approaching Big Sky right now is pure speculation (save for a privileged few); however, I think there is still a big story hiding here, and that is definite confirmation from RT that they're studying DI. That's something we all kind of knew, but had never really seen in print before; good to know they're considering their options.

Yeah, that's related to the fact that you're hitting parts of the board by IP address instead of domain name (cookies are stored based on the domain name part of the address). Once the domain name has propagated throughout the net with the new address (within a day or two), I'll switch everything over to use just the domain name and that problem should go away.

I'm now moving the rest of the site over to the new server. Once it's all moved, everything will work again from the http://siouxsports.com root. Though I've tested the big functions, there are hundreds of pages so it's possible that some other site features will break in the transition. As always, let me know if you see anything.

Trio of Herald articles about the development today: Boom town University Village is going up fast An interesting history of the Bronson property and how it was ignored for so long: UND expansion, Ralph, flood control project make Bronson prime property Parking is always the victim: REA loses some sports

Fixed. It's actually been there the whole time but a slight mistake in my code made it be white text on a white background in IE only (I missed it because it looked just like it does now, white on black, from other browsers).

Good catch. I had already updated that once, but I had been working on the new page design for quite a while so when I finally switched over, some of the updates reverted. I'm woefully behind on updating everything for the new season, I've been wasting all my SiouxSports time on this server move and the new football page design (which is much more standards-compliant, smaller, etc...).

Going to watch the Sioux cream the Cheesers......
jimdahl replied to Skateblade's topic in Men's Hockey
There's never really been a place that Sioux fans congregate. Pre-game, Nitty Gritty will be jammed with fans of all persuasions. Be warned, it will be crowded to the point that you'll probably be standing the whole time (or they'll give you a time limit for a table if you order food). To avoid those crowds and get a place to sit, my friends and I have been hitting State St. Brats before the Friday games the last few years. There were always a few other Sioux fans there, but certainly not a lot. Post-game you can hang out with the coaches/media at the HoJo, though that will be a sleepy scene. If you're looking for a student scene, Brothers is close; State St. Brats will be picking up steam; anything on State St will be getting hopping by 11pm. -
Given the rural Midwest bent of this message board, this may be useless to most reading this message, but it's certainly amused me... If you happen to have a 3G Sprint PCS phone (i.e. polyphonic ring tones), punch in this URL for a very nice ringtone: http://siouxsports.com/wap/fightonsioux.gcd (you pay for your airtime/Internet, but the URL bears no special fees).

I've repeated my opinions on "the rivalry" here enough that I suspect my posting is unnecessary, but since it's a poll... This almost reminds of me former NDSU visitors to this site's pathetic attempts to paint their love-fest with SDSU fans as a rivalry. Having played GVSU for two recent national championships makes them a very important competitor, but only a very short-term rival. It's a shame the regional realignment eliminates the possibility of the rubber match in Florence, but it does mean playing GVSU while they're a top in-region team would be very good for SSI. GVSU worth scheduling? Definitely. As for NDSU, of course a lot of their fans are obnoxious, that's why it's fun to beat them. Attempts to pretend NDSU is not UND's natural rival with 100+ year history always kind of baffle me. I guess since some of the NDSU fans here try to pretend they don't care about UND anymore since we're lowly DII might lead UND fans to reciprocally pretend not to care about NDSU; but aren't those very claims really self-defeating evidence that they do care? That's certainly what I've always thought when I see Bison fans going through contortions to pretend they aren't still obsessed with UND. NDSU worth scheduling? Definitely (but get the stupid SSI fixed first).

Grand Forks population / commercial development
jimdahl replied to Bisonfan1234's topic in Community
G.F. population was actually over 1990 levels before the '97 flood, so attributing part of the decline to the flood is not a huge leap. From MPR: The reduced mission of the air base certainly also affects population (not everyone lives on base). The shutdown of the 321st missile group was predicted to have an impact of about 2113 jobs lost in the Grand Forks County economic area. Grand Forks is certainly hurt in attracting new population by being a small town (i.e. limited development), but also by being in North Dakota. As a one man example, I'm not at all afraid of the weather, but Fargo and Grand Forks are too small and too far from a major population center for my current tastes. For its size, though, I think Grand Fork has seen pretty decent commercial development since the flood. You can't just build a bunch of giant stores and then hope people will move to your town to shop in them, the current development has to be supportable by the population. -
Woah, there. Your first post was damage control claiming there was no change in the distribution plan. Now that people have presented overwhelming evidence that the plan was changed, you're admitting things changed, but are just decrying the screwed students as whiners. Had a plan been made and stuck to, no one would feel screwed because they would have understood the process and lost fairly. No one is whining because they didn't get tickets, they're complaining because the process was arbitrarily changed from what was planned and understood. The rules were changed in the middle of the game without any discussion or debate. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something or maybe all the students on here are lying, but from what I read they were actually screwed.
-
Being neither a student nor in Grand Forks, I didn't see the ticket/contract/information sheet. However, the Dakota Student article I read indicated: That certainly implies first-come first-serve for the 540 tickets (particularly since it refers to raffling off an additional 90). I'm either grossly misinterpreting that article, the Dakota Student got it very wrong, or the plan changed. Given that the article contained quotes about the planning of the procedure from the Student Body President, #2 seems unlikely.

Though you always hate to be the jerk, raising a very public stink when you see something like that happening will usually shame them out of it. Bringing it to the attention of his/her boss probably even gets the friends all DQ'ed and the employee reprimanded/fired. After the fact, there's not much that can be done. I agree that the big mistake here seems to be the last minute change in procedures. If everyone knew in advance how the system was going to work it could have been carefully planned and people would be disappointed when they didn't get tickets, but wouldn't feel they were treated unfairly.
-
My student experience at UND isn't particularly apropos, since in the early 90s we could just walk into the games at will (free / not full). I know that after the championship in '97 demand surged while student admission was still free so students would stand outside for hours before each game for admission. It seems like it would be nice to still have a number of student seats that were individually available for each single game in a first-come first-server manner. That way a student could still go out of their way to get into a few games if they were willing to put in the effort.

Tough question, I could probably come up with a field of 10 that I would say has a 50% chance of containing the eventual champ. However, my field of 10 most certainly wouldn't have contained Denver last year (picked for 5th in the WCHA, finished 4th, hadn't won it all since 1969). Of course, a surprise champ like that is much more likely from the WCHA than from any other conference, so maybe you could make a list of 20 that you were 80% sure would contain the champ.
