  1. I wouldn't say he was bad. He played hard. Just didn't have anything to show for it.

More than anything else, I think Hak wants to spark the other lines by moving Vande down, and Kaip, too. Maybe if Miller keeps playing this hard, he will show his potential, after all.

He's mdway thru his Jr. year - he better hurry.

  2. I don't get Miller with Osh and Duncan. With Osh in the middle he will be the playmaker - Miller is not the finisher needed with that line. He was setup several times and did not cash in. He was very ordinary tonight.

  3. speaking of the NHL, ovechkin signed for 6 years, 54 million to re-up with the caps. didnt think he would stay there but thats a huge plus for washington as a franchise.

This is good for the NHL - it's good when the young talent stays with one team for a while and tries to help establish an identity with a team. Towes/Kane have already done that in Chicago. Let's hope they can surround AO with some more talent in Washington.

  4. didnt know it got that bad for him. great story on rylan and great to see him push through those hard times.

Great article - RK is a great example what Fighting Sioux hockey is all about.

I have noticed improvement in his offense this year - good puck movement, dangling around a few Dman.

    Good luck to Rylan.

  5. Miller seems to give us hope after a road series on a big sheet, and then he comes home and the time and space isn't there for him on UND's NHL-sized rink and nothing good comes of it. I hope I'm wrong this time, but I still have flashbacks to him looking almost "deer in the headlights" when pressured on the second powerplay unit during a recent home series.

Forney just needs to get healthy and into the line-up consistently. Good things will flow from there for him.

Do we know Forney isn't healthy, or just unworthy?

  6. Given that my question had merit (Hak revealed the Dean of Students has gotten involved) and others heard Hakstol talking on Friday's pre-game ...

I could but the Dean would be legally precluded by FERPA from answering. So, given that, I'm a little shocked that Coach Hakstol would bring such a matter up in a public forum like the radio pre-game show. And apparently Hak did.

I'm trying to figure out what Hak (note: HAKSTOL) said, in a pre-game show, streamed worldwide on the internet, about this matter. Why are you surprised that "Member 10" is interested in what Coach Hakstol told the world in the Friday pre-game?

What was I wrong about? The Dean of Students getting involved? Hak said that on the radio.

So if you're looking to rip someone: Rip Hak.

But (based on past advice I've been repeatedly given) I'm going to trust Hak and assume he did what he did for a good reason.

Sounds like double secret probation to me :D

  7. So, Sweden realizes what wins games at this level but we can't?

Freakin' A! Next thing you know, Team Borat will do the same and we'll drop to 5th place.

I'm afraid that it will take the US not making it past the initial part of the tourney to change things... but then again, they'd probably just blame the coach and do nothing.

USA hockey is too political right now to do the right thing re: World Jr's.

The current selection process is more for NHL CSS than choosing a team. You'd be surprise how little influence the coaches have on the team selection. I heard Peter McGuire during the tournament talk from time to time about Team Canada and how this player was on the team to win face offs, and that player was on the team to shut down the other team's top line, etc.

My solution Hire someone like Herb Brooks/Dean Blais for at least 3 years - give him responsiblity of GM and Coach. Let him come up with the selection process he wants, the staff he wants and let him pick the players he wants.

This tournament should be USAHockey's top priority - real success would help promote the sport in this country, which would also help showcase college hockey, where most of the team is selected from.

  8. Hakstol mentioned that Kaip has played very well at center and that he had second thoughts about moving him to a wing. However, he also said that center is Oshie's natural position and having him there enables them to use his offensive and defensive talents more effectively. So it's not as if you're losing a center because you're moving Oshie to that position, which was Hak's preference at the start of the season.

There's nothing wrong with putting your 3 best forwards on a line together. I've been impressed with the offense Kaip has brought this year, along with his grit and physical play.

It's time to face the facts. Look who we have lost over the past 2 years at forward: Stafford, TZajac, Toews, Spirko, Porter.

Now its time for the rest of the forwards to step up and take their place.

  9. Timing is everything. If I remember right these two let the UND staff know quite early that they were not coming back.

If I remember also correctly there have been several gophers who announced very late in the summer that they were going pro.

Yes, if you recruit NHL talent you will only get a cople of years out of them. UND has been doing that since I went to school there. T. Murray, M. Volcan, M. Chorney....

I guess the goal is to recruit NHL-talented players who don't leave you in a lurch, declaring pro in September, or worse December.

FYI - Volcan played 1 year, Murray 2, Chorney 3

  10. If it ended today you all would have NE again with DU waiting in the wings. Unless the NCAA decided to get creative and shove UND, UM, and UMich in another regional.

Another team to watch is Wisconsin - they are hosting the MW regional this year. Right now they are outside looking in. If they make a F5 run and get an autobid, things could get interesting.

  11. I don't know what hockey team you have been watching, but Kaip has been one of the most consistent, hard working players on the ice every single night. He may not have the offensive abilities of a Oshie or Duncan, not many people do, but he has still scored some big goals this season. There is a reason Kaip has the "C" this year, and had the "A" last year. He is a leader and the ultimate team guy. How quickly we (you) forget that when Kaip went toe to toe against AA last season, the boys got fired up and began the second half turn around. This might be one of the more idiotic posts you have written... and that is saying something.

Kaip was our best center last weekend (ignore the scoresheet from Sat.). Maybe they should try K between O and D.

  12. "The Gophers have not played at Ralph Engelstad Arena -- home of the Sioux -- since sweeping a series there in December of 2005."

from the Hammer and Sickle- Star Trib for those of you out of the area or hard core socialists.

I thought they played a game there in the spring of 06. No wonder few people read this fish wrap any more.

    Here's what I sent to the sportwriter this morning - I haven't received a reply ;)

"The Gophers have not played at Ralph Engelstad Arena -- home of the Sioux -- since sweeping a series there in December of 2005. This will be a new experience for the Gophers' 13 freshmen and sophomores."

I know most Gopher fans have tried hard to forget the Regional loss to Holy Cross at REA in 2006, but I didn't think that the Gopher beat reporter would forget it.

Maybe this will jog your memory:

    Thanks Roman.

  13. I think it was Hakstol who has talked about how Genoway's skills with the puck are very valuable in that he can skate the puck out of trouble in the defensive zone. Against a team with dangerous offensive forwards like MN, if the coaches put Genoway back at D it might be because they want to make sure they do the best possible job of taking care of the puck in the defensive zone, and getting it out of the zone as quickly and safely as possible.

Since MN's defense isn't as strong as in the past, getting the puck out of our zone seems to me the best way to win this game. Keep the pressure on the gopher D instead. Don't make bad mistakes and turnovers in your own zone and to use baseball terminology, don't give the Gophers 4 outs. Eventually they will make you pay.

Limit the mistakes and turnovers and get the puck out of the zone. Depend on your own offense to pressure the gopher D and hopefully that is the recipe for success.

As for which D sits so Genoway can play, my guess is the one who make the poorest decisions, or most prone to turnovers in his own end will be the one to sit. I don't know who that is.

Unless his dependability is not as good, I'm guessing Jones physical presence will be welcome on the ice as I wonder if the Sioux will try and beat the Gophers physically, and not get into a run and gun game.

We are always physical, no matter who we play.

I do think that because of our team speed, and the Gophers problems on the blueline, it will be UMN that will try to slow the game down.

If the Gophers give up too many odd man rushes this weekend, they will have no chance.

  14. You can add Malone to that list. We will need everyone pulling their weight to gain 4 pts this weekend. I would like to see Forney, but that probably won't happen. He must be really frustrated!

Malone is a Freshman who has had some injuries. I would cut him some slack.

    No slack for Miller, though.

  15. Just caught Woog on KFAN. This is MY INTERPRETATION of what he said:

Said the Sioux don't give up too many goals and the Gophs don't score. He thinks it will be tough for them to score more than 2-3 each night.

He also said our top 4 D are probably stronger than MN's first one. By "strong" it wasn't clear if he was talking physical strength or just skill/ability.

Anderson and Wehrs (3rd D pair) will struggle in a small rink. If they have to kill a lot of penalties it could be tough for MN's depth on D.

Woog suggested that Schack might be put on the ice to even up the physicality, and seemed to imply that if the Sioux are having their way with the Gophers Shack might have to go out and try to even things up, and if they lose his availability for later in the game he will still have done his job.

UND's played the best goalies in the WCHA. That's one reason for the low scoring offense.

MN is not a team blessed with a lot of depth. PP horrible. Goaltending average, Offense only ok. Fairchild isn't the brightest player but great physically. Thinks Don might be accepting that this may not be their year.

Thinks Okposo will get better in the 2nd half when Carman takes over center.

Not too many guys finish checks throughout the game. Maybe for a period or 2 but not 20 of them for a whole game. Not great on the forecheck.

I also thought I heard him say that the Gophers might have to resort to a "left wing lock" on the forecheck.

    First a LWLock - a Trap can't be too far behind. ;)

With their D and our team speed, it might be the only way they can stay in the game.

    Mike Eaves would be proud.

  16. Would this be similar to your constant rants about an officiating conspiracy against us? For someone who claims to not be bothered about being called a halo, you sure write about it alot.

You should tell Coach Lucia to ask Dave Hakstol for the "World Junior Vaccine" that prevents a 2nd half slump when players return from the WJT - it has worked fabulously for Oshie, Toews, Chorney, Lee the past few years. TDon might want to give it a try. ;)
