  1. Apparently, the recruiting landscape has changed.

Danny Mattson is another recent signing from the Twin Cities High Schools (Gleeson/Fienaghe/Fink), with Kristo playing one year at EP before heading to NTDP.

UND has always been known to recruit heavily in Western Canada, Manitoba and NW Minn (I'm not including the USHL because players are now usually commiting before the go to the USHL). In recent years the recruiting "base" has expanded to include SSM and NTDP.

With more and more recruits coming from the TC (high end players, not role players) this puts the squeeze on the U of M. Usually they get whatever metro kid they want by default. The Don will have to work harder to keep metro players in town, which is good for us.

  2. There is NO question the Gophers playing at the X is home game for them.

However, the ONLY purpose of the WCHA FF is to generate money for the WCHA, it really does not serve any other purpose. No team has EVER made or missed the NCAA tourney based on what happened that week-end. It HAS flipped a seeding a couple of times, but that's it. It's 100% completely about the green, and the few time that they tried playing the FF to Milwaukee, the results weren't very good......even the Badger games weren't close to being sold out.

Ditto - the tourny only exists to make money - in the old days they just continued the 2 game playoffs series at the high seed.

Also - it is good for us the Gophs play Fri night / shorter turn around for them for the Sat game.

It is the best college tournament in the country, at one of the best arenas in the world. Keep it there.

  3. Uh, yeah, that day I was quite a bit ticked off and I took it out on the wrong person (and group of people by extension).

For that, I apologize and I'd delete the post if I could.

Conserving the duck habitat is great. So is the great outdoors. I'm not a big part of that stuff, but that doesn't mean that I should knock it. As a poster pointed out, it IS better than NASCAR.

For all those here who were offended by what I wrote, I am truly sorry. I did not mean to cause offense. I don't think Leir is a fool, a tool, or any unsightful character type. He knows what he is talking about even if I may not care too much about the topic area.

Next time I'll try to do better.

UPDATE: YAY! I deleted the embarrassing post.... now if only those who quoted it would erase my post from theirs....

Of course Red Wing would be anti-hunter - for self preservation :D

  4. 1 UND - best F's/best D = MCup

2 UW - best recruiting class/they just reload with goalies

3 MN - with their D problems, look for the trap at the Maroosh

4 CC - will be solid, not flashy

    5 UMD - will surprise

6 DU - Gwoz needs to go

    7 MTU - overrated

8 SCSU - the end of year slide will continue this year

    9 UAA - bad

    10 MSU - worse

  5. Most everyone expects Duncan, Oshie, Chorney, and Finley to leave for the pro's after this season. It's a gift that they are here this season!

Hak has a bunch of freshmen this year that he can play for 10-20 games to get some experience. And, next year's team has some incredible looking blue-chip recruits.

On my "patented" experience-o-meter, next year's team should rate a 2.5 versus this year's 2.7. That is really pretty good, considering we expect to lose 4 players to the pros early. In fact, a 2.5 will be the third highest experience rating this century, with this year and '04-05 being the only ones higher.

    N

As I've stated before, we really need the "other" Jr's to step up this year and be ready for leadership positions next year, Kozek/Watkins/Miller especially.

Re: Gophers D - they lost over 100 points on the blueline even before the OBrien departure. That hurts.

If they don't have a threat from the point on the PP, teams will take away the one threat they do have, KO.

I think Chorney/Lee were much more talented than the frosh D the Gophers are bringing in.

There are two ways this could play out for Gopher fans.

    1. Frazee - get ready for lots of rubber

    2. Here comes the trap!!!

  6. i am fine with 06 and 07, you cant get first rounders every single year, some work and some dont, thats yet to be determined, this season will have a lot to with that for sure, with what we have coming in 08 and 09 we need these type of 4 year players for sure...

What we really need is the rest of the 05 class to step up this year, especially the forwards (Watkins/Miller/Kozek).

We need more goals now that JT and CP are gone.

  7. There is always tremendous late talent available. Keep in mind one of our "late 08s" was David Toews. Because DU has great facilities, history, and *gag* coaching, they will bring in alot of talent. Riley Nash was a very late commit and he'll do OK. I think Derek Lee is a big prize still out there for 08.

But also keep in mind, not every class needs to be incredible. DU has great 06, and 07 classes, if the 08 is down a little DU will manage.

DT was in the bag long before he announced his signing.

  8. So is that two big names now? Seabrook and Gregoire are pretty big losses for any team. I wonder what the heck is going on over at DU.

Gwoz's act might be getting a little old -like a snake oil salesman.

  9. I went to the Select 17 camp on Friday....I came away very impressed with the Sioux recruits. A few comments:

Fink...strong on the puck with very good vision. Paid attention to the defensive end (sounds like a typical Sioux forward, eh?). Started slow but picked it up in the second half when Kristo was moved to his line. He's got that quiet skill of letting the play come to him (very patient).

Cichy...this has already been mentioned several other places but this kid is the real deal. In the game I saw he had two assists and scored on a beautiful one-timer. Very smooth. A bit on the slender side (but, hey, so was Phil Sykes). Great hands. Centered the top line of his team and was clearly the team leader.

Gleason...I was here three years ago when Taylor Chorney played in this camp and it was obvious that he was top shelf. I didn't get that feeling with Gleason. Ness (Gophers) and Gardiner (Badgers) looked better. I didn't get to see him use his great skating ability so that probably had something to do with an average day for him. His fashion choice was impeccable however as he was sporting a University of North Dakota tee-shirt before his game.

Kristo...the biggest surprise of the day for me. He looked great. He is fast, fast, fast. His intensity level is high; not quite Oshie level but almost. I think the best word to describe him is explosive. He's got a good frame to add another 15-20 lbs and he'll be a monster.

I also saw all of the eastern North Dakota kids play (Groth, Swanson, Gaustad, Arnason and Simonson). They all played well; Simonson looked particularily strong.

It was fun to all these kids. Kristo, Gleason and Fink were all on the same team and before their game they were sitting together in the stands. You could tell they're good friends.

Hak, Eades and Jackson continue to produce top end players and great kids. Based on the four kids I saw Friday the '08/'09 classes could be something very special.

On a side note, I also got to see one of my all-time favorite Sioux players...Craig Ludwig. He was there watching his son, CJ.

All in all it was a great day for this Sioux fan.

    Did you see Finhage play?

  10. These guys have set themselves up to define the subtle difference between "everybody can remember" and "no one will ever forget".

They just need to execute it.

And if they don't, they are bums and losers - right?;)

  11. And I am agreeing with you. I remember being quite surprised when Hrkac came back to UND after playing with Team Canada. Just as I was surprised when Oshie (and Chorney and Finley, and maybe even Duncan) decided to come back. This is a once-in-a-generation talent pool. Guys who were penciled in as second line in April are now fighting for a regular shift. That is depth no one else in the nation (except maybe the Goph's at forward) have. I normally don't get so excited about teams; you can check my history.

    I would rather have Oshie/Duncan vs Wheeler/Okposo.

However, I would take the Gopher freshman F in a heartbeat.

  12. Fischer is the one that I get a kick out of. Granted he might improve, but he was an absolute pylon last year vs. the Sioux. He basically gave Oshie a goal by letting Toews skate right past him, and gave no effort. The Gophs have alot of raw talent on the blue line, but unless the improve considerably, this could be a tough year for Frazee. That said, they will score alot of points as well.

Who's on the blueline for their PP? Last year the #1 NHL draft pick was on the 2nd PP group - this year will be quite a drop off.

  14. Huge loss for the goofys. Let's see....Anderson, Fischer, Peltier, Schack, Wehrs, Fairchild, Bickel, O'Brien.......arena managers around the league, stock plenty of extra light bulbs....

They also lose alot of offense from the blueline - Vanelli/Johnson/Goligoski accounted for over 100 points last year - where are they coming from this year?

  15. Lee's departure only affects Genoway playing defense. Lapoint still would've been in the lineup every night and Marto will probably still be out of the lineup every night. I would have a hard time believing they would bring in another d-men because that would just put another player on the bench every night. What could happen is another d-men may be brought in for 2008, but not 2007.

Stop -- Genoway will play D. Period.

And they don't need any more for 07.

  16. I don't know enough about defensive pairing to figure out who should go with who.... but just throwing a thought out there.... wouldn't you want to change as few of the pairs from last season as possible? They've already got chemistry and knows the other's style of play. It seems that Lapoint and Lee could be similar players. Tall, less physical, more offensive defenders, so perhaps putting him with Chorney wouldn't be that big of a stretch....

    ditto
