  1. Well I disagreed with the call at the time, but after seeing it I don't think I'm going to criticize the call even though a two minute call might have been more appropriate. The officials are told zero tolerance so blaming them probably isn't the way to go about it.

On the other hand we can blame Don Adam's ignorance as the likely reason they had to take judgement away from the officials.

Let's see what happens if Wheeler or Okposo make a similar play at the John - any chance of a major/GM?

  2. First off, we'd need to dose up in order to make Wild hockey entertaining to watch.

Secondly, we wouldn't fare too badly against the Wild. I don't think we'd win, but we wouldn't lose 9-3 either.

Thirdly, I'd love to see Boogaard play in a league where no fighting would be allowed. Someone say PYLON?

Lastly, I'd love to see the type of exhibition UManitoba got. They got to play an exhibition against an NCAA team (which in translation could mean an exhibition against perhaps a WHL or OHL team) and they got to play the Manitoba Moose. I'd love to see the Sioux play an exhibition against an ECHL or AHL club. If it were remotely possible, I'd say it would have to be Manitoba (AHL) though.

    1. I watched much of the Wild v Columbus Sat night - the Wild were very entertaining - they swarmed Columbus most of the night.

    2. Are you serious??? If we were lucky it would be only 9-3 after 1 period. Actually it would take about a month of games to put 3 goals behind Backstrom/Harding. If you really think the Wild would not dominate the Sioux, you have no clue how good NHL players are. We had 3-4 players stay that could signed NHL contracts and only 1-2 of them would be playing in the NHL and not the minors. If we played against them and the Wild really cared, it would not be close.

    3. Just think of Dean Dachyshyn, only taller.

  3. One thing that did jump out at me was a foul up by Frattin on one shift. I caught all 3 forwards on that first line by the left circle in the offensive zone. Frattin needs to stay at home there. It was Duncan's side of the ice, and the center can always help out, but that off winger needs to camp out by the other circle under that circumstance and be prepared to drive the net or go into the corner to dig out a puck. Can't have 3 guys in one corner, that looks like squirts.

It's called close puck support - and it happens all the time at the college level and NHL, especially when there is a battle for the puck.

Coaches don't mind 3 guys on one side, as long as one player is "above" the puck.

  4. thanks for the list nami. i have a question too(most likely for you). how many possible spots at F and D are left for 09? the recruits for F off the top of my head are: budish, M. bruneteau, and possibly k. zajac. for D, Mattson (2010?), and leddy. thanks

We should include Ryan Walters and Anders Lee as players to get.

  5. Obviously there is a lot of skill, but the pro style of play is very boring. The Wild defensive style of play and the fact that many of the top players were out made the game worse. I was ice level, and there wasn't a difference in the speed of the game, as most pro games, the play is very controlled, better passing. The size of the players was noticeably bigger than college. How about seeing big John Scott again from Tech? He even had a black eye to make him look tougher. This was the 5th Wild game I've been to, I have been disappointed each time.

Trust me, there's not much different in the UND "playbook" than any NHL club, especially with the recent NHL rule changes (no redline for passing). That is why UND players are coveted by NHL teams - UND players are more "NHL ready" than most NCAA players.

It's unfair to compare the "excitement" of a pre-season NHL with half the building full versus a typical UND home game.

  6. Chris had a nice writeup of some of the best players he saw last weekend at the NAHL/Midget Showcase. I'm not as interested in the NAHL players, but it is nice to see who some of the best AAA players in the nation are. You can read the write up here,

    http://www.westerncollegehockey.blogspot.com/

With some seasoning in the NAHL/USHL, I think Sam Carr from Roseau/Fargo-Moorhead Jets could be a solid WCHA D-man. He had a very good state tourny - I thought he played just as well as Stejskal from GR who went to Dartmouth.

  8. Since the conversation was introduced in the "Why Minnesota Sucks" (paraphrasing a bit) thread; here's something a bit more positive that we can try to turn negative. :silly:

Despite the brawls in the past, I think there is somewhat of a bond between Wisco fans and Sioux fans - I think both fanbases both like to beat the Gophers over any other team.

  9. I have no specific comment on Mario, because I've seen him play as much as I've seen Trupp, Cichy, Toews, Kristo, etc. play, which is to say, not at all. I also totally appreciate that an ideal hockey team has a mix of different types of players, and guys who might be a little short of skill but are hard to play against play a role.

However, it is hard to see how the numbers add up in the fall of 2008. UND loses Kaip, Radke, Oshie and Duncan up front, and Bina, Chorney and Finley on the blueline (assuming likely early departures). That's 4 and 3. They have Cichy, Toews, Gregoire, Bruneteau, Hextall and now Lamoureux coming in, plus Blood and Gleason. That's 6 and 2. Of the 6, it's hard to see any of them getting pushed back to 2009. Cichy and Toews are national recruits, not the kind of guys who play an extra year of juniors. Gregoire and Bruneteau are both playing an extra year of juniors after their draft year already, and both were drafted. Hextall and now Mario are also playing their extra year of junior hockey this year. It looks like a heck of a class, but there might be an awful lot of forwards on the team that year.

I should add that it seems odd to those of us who aren't privy to the plan, but I'm sure the coaching staff has next fall well considered. It'll just be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Fienhage could come next year if Finley leaves early.

  10. i wouldnt say slipping but i would say they took some unexpected hits as when we lose players and other top programs lose players its usually due to early departures that we may know is gona happen

gwoz the dasher statue will keep them a float

Who do we hate more - GWoz or TDon?

  12. Many of the new jerseys are horrible. Why they don't have horizontal stripes at the bottom is puzzling. Then the add weird designs to the arms. The Penguins, Flyers and others did this. The Flyers need to go back to having an orange jersey. The Lighting, Panthers and a couple other teams suck. Why do some teams, like the Panthers, have have stripes on the sleeves? That's just dumb. Too many teams just took the template and applied their colors to it. The only good teams are the Original Six and the Stars. Once you add a number to the Stars home jersey, it's awesome. Though the Leafs jersey is boring. Why didn't they go with the old school 1930's detailed leaf? And why did they eliminate the horizontal stripe along the bottom? The AHL teams did a much better job of redesigning their jerseys.*

*This post was brought to you by a grumpy, soon to be old curmudgeon, jersey snob.

I think the best "new look" are the Capitals - back to red white and blue.

  13. Who gives a rats a$$!! The coaches are signed for five years!!

Now quit with the 'he hit me first' and drop the puck already!!!!

WDAZ reported that only Hak got a 5 yr contract and the assistants a 1yr. I look like the Herald online has made that correction to its story.

the assistants did only get 1 year contracts, hmmm with nice incentives it sounds like. i would think they would have gotten 2 years at least with hak getting 5.

    Eades = Flight Risk??

  14. This week is really the start of fall hockey. The USHL starts their exibition schedule as the BCHL and AJHL start their regular season schedules. Also, the High School Fall Elite League also kicks off this weekend. The NTDP will start their schedule next week. Here is a list of all of our recruits that are starting play this week.

    Brett Hextall-RC Penticton (BCHL)

    Here is the schedule,

You can listen to the games with the BCHL fan zone pass (it is free) or you can follow the stats off their website.

    Brad Eidsness-G Okotoks (AJHL)

    Here is the schedule,

    Brett Bruneteau-LC Indiana (USHL)

This is the weekend for the USHL vs. QMJHL, here is the schedule

    http://www.ushl.com/news/story.cfm?id=405

Joe Gleason-RD and Danny Mattson-RC, Acceleration Minnesota Team Southwest

Here is the schedule for the Fall High School Elite League, if anyone is in the Twin Cities or Madison area it is a very good showcase of talent,

I believe Fienhage is playing for team SE in the Elite League.

  15. To update my wish list.

    1) Nick Mattson D 2010

    2) Greg Lamoreux F 2010

    3) Ryan Walters F 2010

    4) Zach Budish F 2009

    5) Derek Lee F 2009?

Note: I don't know anything about Tyler Landman

Realistically our biggest need is 2008-2009 Defense

We should be in pretty good shape on D.

We'll need 3 in 08 with Bina/Chorney/Finley leaving and Blood/Gleeson/Fienhage are/can come in 08/09. Jones will be gone the following year. At the most we need 1 more for 08/09, which would give us 8 D for the 09 season.

  16. Remember that out of this list of players Lucia offered Mattson and probably would've offered Fink. Kristo was never really a factor since he committed so early and wasn't really looking at any other schools. Because of this, I wouldn't exacly say that Lucia needs to work harder on keeping kids in the cities. Also remember that for 2009 they still got Ness, Schroeder, and Youso, which are all players that we would've given offers to.

The good news for the Sioux is that high end HS players (Mr. Hockey candidates) from the TC are now considering/choosing ND.

I think there have been several factors that have opened up this recruiting area for ND. The cliche from Gopher lovers that "UND only recruits Canadians" is officially dead - the success of Bo, ZPar, Stafford, Smaby, etc. has helped in that regard. The new facilities are obviously a factor in recruiting. Coach Eades has also been more involved with USA summer camps, which gives the high end TC kids early exposure to UND. Recent success at the Final 5 (which is another reason to keep it in St. Paul) and 3 F4 in a row hasn't hurt either.
