  1. #3. For being 6'7, he doesn't touch anyone. Finley should be out there killing kids, night in and night out.

There's a big dent in the end boards at the National Hockey Center from our series this year courtesy of big Joe - I believe Lasch was the dent-ee.

  2. Lammy's numbers for this game will suck, but he didn't play poorly. Denver capitalized on a lot of puck luck.

It wasn't his best game of the year, by far.

Goal 1 - if he stays on his skates on the initial shot, the second shot is an easy save.

    Goal 2 - didn't shut the 5 hole - it was a 2-1 though

    Goal 3 - didn't control 1st shot, led to 2 rebounds - it was a 4-2 though

Goal 4 - bad coverage - where was Trupp?

It's especially tough on the team when you give 3 light ones, especially when you control possession and territory for most of the game.

It was good to see the team shake all the above off and play a great 3rd period, including Lammy. Hopefully he got this one out of his system.

  3. For anyone interested, you can watch Danny Mattson on FSN North tommorow night at 7. His team, Holy Angels, plays at Stillwater. This is the last time that one of our high school recruits will be on the FSN North schedule this year, except for the playoffs that is. Out of the fowards coming in for 2009, he is my favorite to watch and has the most upside.

    Don't forget about Kristo.

  4. What a great Friday night of NCAA Hockey. :D

    6:00 p.m. RPI at Colgate - DirecTV 625 Dish 438 (SNY)

6:00 p.m. Northern Michigan at Ohio State - DirecTV 220 Dish 439 (Big Ten)

    6:30 p.m. Maine at Boston University - DirecTV 623 Dish 434 (NESN)

6:30 p.m. Lake Superior State at Michigan - DirecTV 636 Dish 430 (Fox Sports Det)

7:30 p.m. Minnesota State at Wisconsin - DirecTV 642 Dish ? (Fox Sports Wis)

7:30 p.m. Denver at North Dakota - DirecTV 645 Dish 414 (Fox Sports RM)

Dumb question from a current cable customer in Minnesota considering DirectTV/DishNet:

Do you have to get a sports package to get FSN North in Minn?

  5. yeah we will have 6 in this week...i say in the end we get 4 for sure and 5 if there arent any upsets in conference tourneys as i see 1 or 2 wcha teams on that 12,13 bubble....

It looks like the ECAC would be the most likely candidate for a conf. tourny upset impacting the brackets. Clarkson is the only ECAC team in the top 14 - if Princeton, Quinnipiac or Cornell pulls an upset (it would only be a minor upset at that) the ECAC might get 2 teams. The question for Clarkson is that if they lose in the conf tourny, does that drop them below 14 in the PWR- they would be 13 this week.

  6. Another interesting week for bracketology - here's how the WCHA teams rank in this week's PWR.

    4 CC

    5 Denver

    6. UND

    8. Minn St.

    9. UMD

    12. Wisconsin

With this many teams in the tourny and the requirement that CC and Wisconsin have to be placed at home, it would be hard to avoid a 1st round WCHA match-up. I predict UCHO puts us in Worcester with a 1st round game v. UMD.

  7. The MacNaughton is still mathematically possible, if still pretty unlikely. We need CC to struggle so we can make up 4 points across 6 games:

    UND wins the MacNaughton scenario

I think the best situation for us in the NCAA's is for CC and us to be #1 seeds. This keeps us out of Colo Springs, where the Tigers have been tough to beat. Also, if Mich keeps winning, they are likely to be the overall #1 seed in Mad-town.

The scenario I would like is us to be #4 seed overall/Miami #5.

  8. So as of Saturday AM, we're sitting T-5th in the Pairwise.

I think we have a great chance to get a #1 seed. In fact, my preferred scenario is for CC to get a #1 seed AND UND to get a #1. That way we don't get to face CC on their home ice where they are unbeaten. Send UND anywhere else, PLEASE. Also on my wish list is for Wisconsin to not qualify OR qualify as a #4 if the Sioux are a #1 - that way we won't get sent to Madison to play the Badgers on their home ice.

Here's one man's opinion of what has to happen for UND to get a #1 seed:

    1) Raise the RPI to over .59.

For that to happen, UND needs to win 7 of 8 remaining regular season (6 of those at home!), win the 1st round WCHA, and win a game at the WCHA FF. Using the SS.com calculations (thanks guys!) and my basic excel skills, that gets us to .59.

    2) New Hampshire needs to lose. A) Either drop 2 to BC, or B) lose a couple other games. If they were to lose too much, it would HURT the Sioux because we played them twice and all their wins give us points.

    3) We need to sweep Denver, OR they need to lose a couple other games. (We're narrowly ahead today.)

There's lot of other possibilities for getting a #1, but that is the most likely.

    4) Alternatively, even if Denver wins, we may pass Miami if they lose 2 games of their remaining. Their RPI plummets if they lose to a CCHA cupcake like Western Michigan.

    5) OR, if Michigan were to lose tonight and get swept by Michigan State, that would drop them below UND. (If they

    6) If UND were to play CC in the WCHA's, that would be critical because it gives us a chance to flip that comparison that is otherwise out of reach.

NH needs to lose to TUCs - this would help us win the TUC battle with them and flip the comparison to us.

Remember - RPI is only on factor in the PWR comparison - and strength of schedule is not as important this year as it has been in the past.

  9. if miami sweeps then we flip the michigan comparison as we gain the tuc advantage, if michigan sweeps we could eventually flip the miami comparison down the raod but that is iffy.

That would move us to 21 PWR - and I mentioned this before about AA - if they move up to a TUC we could flip NH and have 22 PWR - which could tie us with Mich for 2.

  10. Sorry for pulling up and older comment. Don't have the time to follow these threads as much.

McWilliam's D partner. Was it Olsen and if so, what did he have to say? I'm just curious to see if he saw what I saw.

Yes - not many details were given - he was impressed, though. His comments about Clarke were unsolicited.

  11. I don't have a really good reason, but I really want Michigan to pound Miami this weekend. Maybe it's because I think Miami is insanely overrated.

Part of me dislikes Mich just as much as Minn. NCAA's at Yost perhaps?

A victory over Mich did put us on the hockey map in the late 40's. It was before Minn was a factor

  12. Thanks for sharing this.

I think Gregoire is going to be another outstanding Sioux from Winnipeg. Guys like Zajac and Toews have set the bar and there are a lot of kids that have taken notice and want to be just like these guys. Its no surprise to me that all of them share certain traits and characteristics.

The list of outstanding players that go from Winnipeg to the Sioux to the NHL should only get longer and longer over the next few decades.

It didn't actually start with Travis and JT - Winnipeg native James Patrick played over 1000 games in the NHL. I'm sure there were others.

  13. I was looking at the TUC against New Hampshire over the weekend. It looked to me that if we won one more TUC game or if they lost one more we'd flip the comparison with them. If I understand it right we'd be #4 in the pairwise on the inside looking out.

That's how important the TUC is.

This is why it would be good for AA to move up to a TUC (they are 27 in RPI - they would need to move to 25). Our 2-0 record v. AA would improve our TUC win percentage. We would probably win the NH comparison, which would move us to a #1 seed.

  14. Can we be a little objective and put the incident last weekend in perspective? Wheeler does have more goals than either Duncan or Oshie. Not saying he is better, but he obviously has a good deal of talent.

    School - RPI

    Wayne State: 53

    Ohio State: 47

    Rensselaer: 44

    RIT: 40

    Air Force: 36

Some cupcakes to pad the non-conference record and stats.

Fact: The Blues stated publicly they wanted Oshie to sign last summer. The Coyotes publicly stated they wanted Wheeler to stay in school.

    Why? He's not good enough.

  15. I can think of one of Gretzky's first round draft choices that isn't doing much! I think Turris is has a better chance of being on the Yotes than Wheeler.

He'd be the second PHX #1 to pass up the Blake-ster

Fiction (often heard from MSP): The 'Yotes/Gretzky like the way Wheeler is developing at UMinn and are in no hurry to rush him.

Fact: He has been an underacheiver and is not good enough for the AHL/NHL right now.

  16. According to Inside College Hockey Randy Schmidt has been suspended for at least the season. So let's see screw over a division two school and you get another chance. Screw over a Big Ten school and lose your job perhaps permanently:

Certainly screwing up after a warning is a bigger deal. But I think they went from a slap on the wrist to the death penalty because of who it was rather than what he did. Maybe if they would have treated it as a serious matter after the first time the second time wouldn't have happened.

The first offense (DU at SCSU), which was a terrible call, still involved some judgement, however poor it was.

The second offense was just plain carelessness and negligence.

I don't think it mattered who the teams were - the fact that there were 2 incidents and the larger offense happened 2nd warranted the suspension.

  17. Michigan/Miami is on CSTV Friday at 7pm.

AA/Mankato is on Charter Main Street both nights.

Even it it helps the Sioux, I still don't think I could cheer for Gopher victories.

AA victories this weekend could make them a TUC - they are sitting at 27 in RPI - you need to be 25.

This wouldn't help us with CC or Denver (we all are undefeated vs. AA) but it should help us with our comparisons with NH.

  18. i bet finehage and gleason are better than macwilliam. oh well. hak recruited him and im sure there is a reason for that  i dont see anyone sitting so i wonder who will be coming in next year and who will be 09. interesting

He didn't dislike McWilliam - he just thought CF was better.

Clarke and Mattson are the start to a great blueline in 2010.
