  1. I don't have to listen to the Sioux people I can see the Sioux people in their Sioux jerseys at a hockey game on a given Friday and Saturday night. I think that speaks how they feel about the name.
  2. And why would you not include the Cleveland Whites. Once again we are being discriminated against. Velkommen to my uff-da
  3. Calm down cracker. We don't want you to have an on-line heart attack. So now not only can you tell white people how they should think and feel and what they should honor, but now you can also tell Native Americans what they can honor. Has it ever crossed your mind that there are many, many Native Americans that don't have the same view as yours and don't honor the same things that you do? Just a side note: After Feb. 1 do we have to cover everything on campus that has to do with Native Americans, like the Native American Center.
  4. PETA has also gone after Green Bay Packers. And it is just a matter of time before they become more vocal. Since I don't see the 100 percent backing from Gopher fans, I can't say for sure I would back them.
  5. I would just like to say that I do not want the name kept because I feel it honors Native Americans. I see no honor is a group of people that are defeated by another group of people and then whine and cry about for the rest of their lives. I want the name kept because that is what it has been for almost 80 years and because the University was asked by the Sioux Nation to use the name. Let's say our name was still Flickertails (God help us) and the Sioux Nation came to us and asked us to change it to the Sioux and we told them no. They would be pissed off. So were danged if we do and danged if we don't. They story of the white people's lives.
  6. I can guarantee you PETA is licking their chops (no pun intended) right now. In a couple of years the Gophers and Bison will also be crying in their beer. Nicknames like Gophers and Bison may not be racist, but according to PETA they are politically incorrect.
  7. Does anyone know what the name of website is that put out this information? I tried looking under CLS, but I couldn't find anything.
  8. Unfortunately Frank Foughty, the attorney and Native American from Devils Lake and big supporter of the nickname, died last week. I find it ironic that when you go to www.ncaa.com the top story is about the nickname issue. And then you scroll down to the bottom of the site and there is a NCAA shop where you can buy Sioux jerseys with the Sioux logo. Hypocrisy runs rampant.
  9. I guess I will not be attending any NCAA events after Feb. 1, 2008. If they don't want my logo, they don't get my money. When we make it to the Frozen Four we get screwed everytime anyways. You have to be a DI school in order to get any profits.
  10. To quote Dorreen Yellow Bird "Don't take Sports Illustrated poll at face value." I believe some excuses she used were: the poll didn't indicate how many people refused to take it. Not everyone has a phone. Didn't indicate whether survey takers were aware that many, if not all, reservation hometown teams use names such as Braves, Chiefs or Warriors. So, when a call comes out of the blue from this non-Native survey taker from Big Town, USA, and the caller asks if the listener feels that the use of American Indians names is discriminatory - well, of course not, the listener answers. They ARE warriors. The questions and the answers are from two different worlds, two different perspectives. Not enough Native people were surveyed. And on and on. So I would assume she would feel the same about this survey
  11. grahamcracker: If it is wrong for UND to use the name Sioux what makes it right for the hockey team Soo Indians to use that name. And why aren't you and others complaining about them. Maybe not complaing so much about the Soo part, but what about the Indians part. This team was just established in 1995, you would think they would have known better at that time. Everyone needs to go to sooindians.com and check it out. And I don't care if the owner is Native American. They players are not. Please explain to me why he was able to do this without PC's protesting.
  12. "UND is home of the Fighting Sioux. UND officially adopted the name of the Fighting Sioux in the 1930s to honor the American Indian tribes of the state. We ask that you cheer your team to victory and exhibit good sportsmanship, as well as respect for the American Indians and their rich culture and heritage." This was actually writen by a Sioux Native American, who also did the video that goes along with it. In fact I believe he does most of those cool videos of the Sioux hockey team. Not that any of this matters to grahamkracker (what is that suppose to mean by the way) but I thought I would throw it out there. In fact, it was a Native American that designed the logo, Native Americans that designed the sculpture outside of the arena and a Native American that wrote the verse. If so many Native Americans want the name changed, somebody better tell these guys that they don't have a right to have a mind of their own.
  13. Why is it that we always "have to learn about Native American History" what about German history, Irish history, Norwegian history. They aren't teaching these in schools, but you don't hear us whining about it. According to Dorreen we can blame the Columbine shootings on nicknames like Fighting Irish, Knights, Vikings, ect. She is so far gone you have to look past PETA to try and see her. I guess until us Caucasians get an editorial columnist on the payroll to run their agenda on the editorial pages, we just don't matter. Racial discrimination CAN and DOES happen to Caucasian Americans! You just don't hear or read about it. A Caucasian American was beat to death in Devils Lake by 7 American Indians, yet there was nothing mentioned about a hate crime. What if it would have been the other way around?
  14. I'm headed to Winnipeg on May 23 to watch Goren against Roche. We got real nice seats in row four Section 127 (a corner). Can't wait to watch these two muck it up against each other.
  15. Wow! They're going to be a DI powerhouse in hockey just like the Sioux? That's great. Let's all scream yellow!!!!
  16. It was front page of Sports not "front page". And yes it does deserve front page of sports. This is a local boy that everyone has been waiting to see where he would go. We were all praying it wasn't the Gophers. And since there was no press conference called I knew he must have picked the Sioux. Welcome aboard Marto. I can't wait for you to skate circles around Hagemo and Goligoski.
  17. Yeah, according to the Gophers, Kessel is the second coming of Christ. So I guess Hirsch was right. He is coming.
  18. I think he's just trying to compensate for something.
  19. I am very happy with this season and very proud of the guys. The only thing I couldn't stomach was watching Geoff Paukovich celebrate a national championship while Robbie Bina stood on the sidelines. It made me want to puke. I was proud of the guys for shaking his hand at the end (not sure if I would have). They may not have made eye contact with his, including Coach Hakstol, but they at least shook his hand. Just another sign of more class from the Sioux.
  20. Let's just remember what's most important: No matter who wins on Saturday -- it won't be the Gophers!! Sioux score 3, Denver scores 1, Paukavich gets checked 23 times.
  21. I agree that Native Americans should be treated equally to the "white man". Equally in taxation, equally in scholarships, equally in programs at UND, equally in getting into the nursing program, law program, etc., and equally in pay in the work force. I have a friend who did not make the nursing program, but spots open for Native Americans only went to students with poorer grades. I have a friend who couldn't get his masters from UND because only 5 people were accepted and 3 HAD to be Native Americans. I get less pay then a Native American at my job, yet my responsibilities and my time here are more. It seems it's acceptable and not racist for a "white man" to be treated differently because of skin, but it is not acceptable and racist for anyone else. Uff-da. Uff-da. Uff-da
  22. I believe the Gopher troll was the first to bring up personal issues with Sioux players, not the Sioux fans bringing up personal issues with the Gophers.
  23. Those "paid singers" are at almost all the hockey games. I see them there with their SIOUX jersey's on. Erik Enno is/was a volunteer coach for the SIOUX basketball team. I'm just glad that when people here Hitler and Nazi they won't think of Ralph anymore, instead the names Russell Means and Jeff Weise will come to mind.
  24. Wow! Denver is sitting him for the big game against Bemidji. If you want to make an impression Gwoz, sit him out as long as Robbie has to sit out, otherwise never mind. Go Beavers!!!
  25. It will be interesting to see how Dorreen Yellow Bird will blame the shootings on the Sioux nickname. In her column on March 19, she blamed the Sioux nickname for alcohol abuse and meth addiction among Native American youth. Why stop there. Let's blame the Sioux nickname for every problem Native American youth have.
