  1. Golden Rodent History.com More proof that I have too much time on my hands...I dug this stuff up on this goofer website (okay, I made up the name of that link): So, the Goofs are basically named after some type of land grab deal whipped up by crooked politicians and railroad barons? Gotta be proud of that! The only thing that I can think of that is golden need to be flushed, not worn on a playing field. "far below expectations"?? Jeez, arrogance is a long standing tradition out of gooferville. I know, it's a 79 year old quote, but it's just another reason to get fired up to beat the varmits. Kick those flea infested hole digging pests butts!
  2. That's a fact. I remember voting for 3 Republicans and 7 Democrats in the 2002 elections. I do my research and make my own decision on who I think is the best person for the job. I guess I'll have to tune in Sunday morning for Ed's big debut. I doubt if I will agree with him on a lot of issues, but I find it interesting that the voice of the Sioux is now the voice for national liberal talk radio.... That's gotta irk some folks here! Let's Go Sioux! Beat Yale! Beat George W's School! See...we're all Liberals this weekend!
  3. Just because at this point in his life, Matt Greene's priority is hockey doesn't diminsh UND's academics at all. I know that Mr. Greene has to keep his grades up under the supervision of DB and the rest of the coaching staff to keep playing hockey. I also know that the UND athletic department runs clean programs, which is more than I can say of some other athletic programs I know of in the northern regions. (Anyone remember the "do your homework" chant at the WCHA final five a few years back!) If anyone think his remarks are a problem bringing some kind of disgrace to UND academically, I remember about 12 years ago at McNichols Arena during the NCAA D-1 Final Four. Duke vs. UNLV. The Duke fans sitting directly behind the UNLV players bench with the best sign I have ever seen pointing toward the UNLV players. It said, "Welcome Fellow Scholars". Yeah, maybe UND is a "Hockey Factory", but DB is not the Jerry Tarkanian of hockey.
  4. Allright, I really wanted to avoid this on a sports website, but here goes... Goon and others, What's so hard to understand? Both the NRA and the ACLU are organizations that are designed to protect our constitutional rights. Sometimes people feel they both go a bit overboard. I would rather see both of these organizations go "too far" in protecting our constitutional rights than not far enough. Enough this already. Let's get back to supporting Sioux sports!
  5. Metro State may cut athletics Budget problems at Metro State in Denver are making that school's trustees think of axing their athletic programs. You may remember that they won two D-II Men's Basketball championships recently. It kind of makes me put the in-fighting that NDSU and UND have over the contract to play football and changes to D-IAA into perspective. After reading this , I'm happy that both schools still have college athetics.
  6. RD17, That was an interesting article, but it seemed to have more to do with Boise State lobbying to join that MWC than anyone in the MWC showing interest in them. However, I could see expansion based on the minimum home game requirement. MWC teams seem to look for an easy win here and there, just like any other football program. With these new attendance requirements, it's going to tougher for those schools to pick up a I-A win against a lower conference if the MWC ends up being at the very bottom of the barrel. I just don't see Hawaii as an option. It's a travel nightmare for any school outside of the west coast. If they did expand by two schools, I would bet on Fresno State and Nevada. I also see Wyoming under Joe Glenn improving! (I loved their win over BYU!) Their attendance should now reach the minimum needed. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to eventually seeing NDSU come down to Fort Collins for the "every fourth year" Ram's vs the unknown I-AA school buttwhooping. Hey, NDSU fans will feel welcome with the Green and Gold on all the Ram fans at CSU! Unfortunately, they quit selling beer at Hughes Stadium, so our poor friends from moo U will have to watch their football heroes get stomped while being stone cold sober.
  7. I doubt that would happen. The Mountain West Conference was formed BECAUSE the WAC overextended itself. Those schools bailed on the WAC and purposely left Hawaii and Fresno State out of the loop. Although you can never say never, I doubt they are looking to add any WAC schools at this time.
  8. CoteauRinkRat and sioux fan in phoenix, My point is, I put politics aside with this inane B.S. about the nickname. I don't argue politics on a sports message board, but I also think everyone has a right to their own opinion. Because there really isn't any serious opposition to the nickname, this is not a "hot" political issue. Yes, there are left leaning small pockets of folks who want the name changed. It's pretty obvious they do not have a broad base of support and are not very credible. Keep in mind that these protests are not coming from a wide sweeping group called "the left". Jeez, we Democrats couldn't even pass a decent health care act when we had total control of Congress and the White House. How can you possibly expect a large coalition of liberals to get together and successfully oppose an issue that they honestly don't even care about? However, it is correct that they are coming from what CoteauRinkRat describes as "anti-nickname groups". In my opinion, they are a small and very bored group of folks who want to get their names and their common "cause" in the paper. They get a thrill when they make a splash in small town papers like the Forum or the Herald. These groups are just a small blip in larger media outlets like the Denver Post or the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Even though they are small, I do think we should stand up an oppose these folks, but don't give them more credit than they deserve. btw...I am a member of the ACLU, but I also am a member of the NRA (Hey, growing up in North Dakota kind of breeds this kind of independence).....I'm more of a ala carte liberal rather than what you would call a knee jerk reactionary.
  9. Hey guys, as a card carrying member of the ACLU (which I am, and am proud of it!) I can assure you that there isn't some grand conspiracy or a "misinformation campaign" coming from the left on this school nickname issue. Calm down guys, this is just a few bored folks trying to get their names and this issue to the attention of a bored smalltown media. Don't sweat it guys. I'm a UND alum and a Fighting Sioux fan. I like the nickname and don't see a problem with it. If there was a SERIOUS campaign against the name, there would be more than a handfull of people out there rallying against it. They just seem to crave the attention they get by using this non-issue. If there was SERIOUS support of this non-issue coming from the left, there would be HUGE rallies speaking out against these nicknames. North Dakota is a state where all three members of congress are Democrats. Although they are probably more moderate than guys like me, that still shows that there is a considerable percentage of liberal leaning Democrats in the state of North Dakota. No doubt, a minority of North Dakotans are liberal leaning, but still that would be quite a large number of folks that don't seem to be showing up at these rallies. I'm not here to argue politics, so don't even start that crap with me. I'm a Fighting Sioux sports fan, and I like the nickname. You can be a Sioux fan and it doesn't matter to me if you are a Republican, Democrat or a Green Party member. You don't even vote or care about politics. This is only sports, support of your alma mater and cheering our sports teams. Some folks here make it sound like you had better be a card carrying dittohead to be a Sioux fan! That's not true at all. But in my opinion you do have to hate those stinking Gophers and Bison and continue to cheer the Fighting Sioux!
  10. I hope there is a packed and noisy crowd at the Ralph tonight. I watched the previous two friday College Hockey games of the week on CSTV. Being a Sioux hockey fan and a college hockey fan, I find it embarassing to see all the empty seats in those arenas. I can understand the first game in Dayton between St. Lawrence and Miami, OH. An away game for both teams, but Ohio State/Notre Dame was on OSU home ice. I guess they aren't big on hockey there. It's too bad they couldn't have set their schedule to show more packed houses. I wouldn't mind seeing the Sioux 2-3 times a year on CSTV. Either way, let's kick some Eagle butt tonight!
  11. Well, I guess the Bison can keep the "Nickle" trophy, whatever that is.... The Sioux will, of course, retain the Nickel Trophy. Jeez, you would think ever since Microsoft moved into Fargo someone there would learn how to use spellcheck!
  12. USCHO College Hockey Poll No first place votes for the Sioux, which probably makes sense.
  13. It's good to see that the other local D-1 schools are including UNC in their basketball schedule. I am a bit confused as to why the game with CSU is an exhibition game and won't count. I noticed that in the Denver Post today. ??
  14. Oh.....uh, never mind. Hey, did you hear that a English Professor at UND is pissed about the UND nickname being used in a Mesa State student paper sports headline. Wait, that's been discussed also.... Oh well, at least hockey season starts next week.
  15. What is up with this list? Top 16 College Hockey Coaches of all time Okay, it appears that UND must have won 7 national championships without any "all time" great coaches. To me this is a crock, Blais and Gino should have both been on this list. Whatcha think?
  16. I'm not surprised at Coach Dalton saying these things. He probably is thinking of retiring, and possibly is a little frustrated at this transition. After all, what exactly is this team playing for this year? No playoffs (I am assuming..) and no conference championship. They appear to be doing well so far in the transition phase, but I think Dalton isn't interested in this transition. Maybe I'm wrong, but this appears to be more of a younger coaches dream. I don't think he would be extremely interested in putting in the energy to bring this program up to the I-AA standard that is necessary. I could be wrong though....
  17. I found something interesting in the Denver Post today. CSU Faces Big Test If this would happen, that would be a nice payday for UNC, and would help give them exposure in the same market as CSU.
  18. What are you complaining about? There are plenty of handicapped seats for our "challenged" NDSU friends.
  19. After settling for a tie with the POI group, I expect to see some Siouxsports.com players signing up for one of these camps!
  20. From what I understand the commissioner of the CHA is going around trying to sell hockey to various AD's in the country. He made a stop at Colorado State University within the past few months also. He's kind of like Professor Hill selling the idea of a boys band to unsuspecting AD's.
  21. Minnesota may produce more hockey players at the higher levels than any other state. Possibly they have more high school (age) players than any other state. But I would tag Michigan as the hockey state of the union. Easily more D-1 championships than any other state, and with the Red Wings, more Stanley Cup champions.
  22. I agree that UNC will have a difficult time attracting fans to their basketball, football and volleyball games. Their baskeball/volleyball facility if a joke. However, they make a good point in that article about recruiting for baseball and wrestling. The Coors and Monfort families are good donors for UNC, they could put up the cash for a good baseball facility. One thing that hurts NDSU is the nasty spring weather. Northern climate baseball programs usually suffer because of this problem. Just check and see how many UND and NDSU baseball games were cancelled this year. That isn't unusual. Colorado isn't nearly as bad, but spring storms can throw a monkey wrench into any baseball program here.
  23. I don't know if it's a bigger upset. Probably about "even" in terms of an upset. I think what is shocking in the Detroit/Ducks series is that the Ducks took them out in a 4 game sweep. What seems shocking about the Avs/Wild series is that Colorado blew a 3-1 series lead and lost 3 of 4 at home. Maybe the Wild would like to play their home games at the Pepsi Center?
  24. There was a news conference with Avs GM Pierre Lacroix yesterday. He said that Granato's job is safe and also said that he was happy with the performance of his team. He also said he was disappointed in the outcome of the series, but doesn't really have any regrets. Pierre is pretty good about publicly backing his coaches and players, but it will be interesting to see what is the final outcome of the Avs early ejection from the playoffs. Will Forsberg and Roy come back? Will Pierre be given the green light to spend more $$$ to sign some big name free agents? It's like a soap opera here in Colorado! I agree with the statements made about the "neutral zone trap". There's nothing illegal about it, and if it works you would be an idiot not to do it. I also agree that Jacques Lemaire could be the best coach left in the playoffs. He has the experience, which could make the Wild run pretty interesting. I'm pulling for them now. I'd love to see a Wild/Stars conference final!
