  1. Clayton, Thanks for the info through that link. I saw this in the Denver Post about our friend Mr. Means. Apparantly, Gov. Janklow gave him a pardon for his felony Denver Post on Russell Means Pardon
  2. I'm not trying to debate the merits of D-1AA (I can't say D-1, when the football teams truly won't be.). But, I work with a couple of Northern Colorado students who told me that they were told to expect both higher tuition and higher activity fees due to the move of UNC to D-1AA. I am not sure if they had their facts straight. I could see the increase in activity fees, but don't understand the increase in tuition. Is anything like this going on at NDSU? Just a question. Not trying to start a fight here.

    World Jr.s

Looks like Canada won 3-2. Seemed to be a hell of a game. USA plays Finland for the Bronze. Looks like an overall good tournament showing for the USA and the UND players. Let's hope the Sioux can get the win against CC on Saturday with out these guys who will need a bit of a rest when they get back.
  4. PCM, Although we probably won't agree Rapid City, (I still don't like that place!) my point is that there are big problems on the reservations. South Dakota's reservations are in worse shape than those of North Dakota. (Which are by no means any type of paradise.) Racism exists toward Native Americans. That's a problem in both states. I saw an exaggerated view growing up on Silver Street in North Rapid. I don't know where your sister lives, but growing up near Lakota homes was quite an experience. My point is, it's insane to think that the nickname is a real issue on the reservations. I can't believe these so-called leaders waste their time and effort. It's obvious from looking at the "protests" and seeing the polls that they have no base of support for this issue. PCM, Is it true that Means is running for a tribal council leadership post?
  5. Growing up in Rapid City SD, in good old North Rapid, I can honestly say that I learned several nasty native words that were used against the local tribal members that lived in that town. And what a nasty town it was. Luckily, our family moved to Wahpeton, ND and got away from that awful, racist place. IMHO South Dakota is one screwed up state. Seems that Rapid City is now one big video casino with a pawn shop around every corner. The Natives that live there to be near the Black Hills are treated like S*&t. As bad as things can be on the reservations in North Dakota...South Dakotans should hang their heads in shame over the way things are in their own state. I can see why South Dakotans have a very messed up image of the Sioux nickname. Never, in my years in Grand Forks, did I hear anything said negatively about the Sioux nickname from UND folks. No tomahawk chops or any of the other stupid things that go on at Illinois or FSU. My Native friends both on campus AND in my fraternity were PROUD to wear the Sioux logo. I am proud that UND has a strong Native American Studies program. And I do believe the Sports Illustrated poll. I think it's time for UND Alumni to just tell these idiots to back off, believe the polls and take care of their own business. Go to Martin and the Pine Ridge Reservation and give them a hand. Don't waste your worries or your time over the nickname issue. There are bigger fish to fry.
  6. Goaltending seems to be the "Achilles Heel" of the Sioux. Hopefully things will settle down next weekend. I spent the night watching Denver dismantle UNH in their tourney. Two shutouts in a row over quality Miami and UNH squads. I was pulling for our WCHA comrades, but, they kind of scare me.
  7. At least this issue should be resolved before the conference season starts. Maybe it will give them more incentive to win the NCC and go to the NCAA playoffs VIA a conference championship? Also, maybe we can weasel outta this one. Can any basketball team claiming Fargo as it's town REALLY be considered professional? As far as UNC goes...yeah, it was a rogue football program. I won't waste any money watching a I-AA school in Greeley. I'd rather spend about the same coin going to CSU games in Ft. Collins.

    Coaching Changes?

PCM, I don't read JBB's posts. A total waste of time. I wish there was an "ignore" capability on this website. Unfortunately, I just have to see who did the posting and pass over it.\ I"m happy that Lennon is staying for now. No doubt he will have the opportunity to move upward in the future. I'm sure he'll end up with a much better situation by waiting. Joe Glenn ended up at Wyoming. I think Sac State would have been a better choice for any coach!

    Coaching Changes?

Hey.. Pat Behrns won three D-II national championships. I guess they are sticking to their story at "the Bee". I wonder how many Masters Degrees he has on his resume?? hm....
  10. UNC rolled into the semi-finals against Grand Valley State. I wish them luck. However, Mr. Cutlip ended up on the wrong side of the law last week. He's facing DUI charges and more than likely won't be given another chance to play football at UNC. At the beginning of the year Kay Dalton stated he would not allow any room for error in his case. Dalton is a stubborn old school guy, I believe that Cutlip is finished playing college football.
  11. What we need is more goalies like the one from Denver (??what was his name??). He used to help the crowd on the road with their sieve chant by waving his arms and goalie stick.....That was awesome!

    Coaching Changes?

I was traveling by Knox, ND this past week and saw a big sign "hometown of Dale Lennon, coach of the UND Fighting Sioux 2001 National Champions". You know that has to be a big source of pride for him. He is a smalltown guy. I hope he holds out for better opportunities than Sac State. That would be a waste of talent.

    Coaching Changes?

I was living in West Hall when Behrns was coach. The football players hated his living guts. I don't imagine Lennon liked him either. I don't remember him saying anything about Behrns, but I remember some others talking about him. I would imagine that Behrns has wore out his welcome in Omaha also. He is probably looking for greener pastures. I hope Lennon stays. That would not only be good for the Sioux. Hopefully, if he wishes to move up, it would be to a quality D-IAA program. But, it better not be those Bison! Oh wait, I meant a QUALITY program, so the Bison woudn't be included.... Speaking of (former) NCC coaches, Joe Glenn of Montana (formerly UNC) is rumoured to be in the running for the University of Utah head coach position.
  14. The way this thread is going, it probably belongs in the D-IAA section. So be it. From living in Colorado and seeing UNC's athletic facilities, our friends in Greeley are MUCH weaker in that area than both NDSU and UND. (With the exception of the use of the Denver Broncos weight training facilities.) I think one thing that has pulled the trigger for them is the fact that their travel expenses to other D-1AA schools isn't going to be any greater than what they deal with now in the NCC. The other has to be the potential revenue. That's what I don't understand. The big money loser is going to be football, despite the fact it may be the one sport they will compete in more quickly at the I-AA level than either NDSU or SDSU. Although they have a new facility, they don't have a small D-II facility. They can possibly get 10,000+ seated with some temporary stands next year. I can't imagine a comfortable seating situation for many of the fans there. I don't understand how UNC could possibly fill 10,000 seats in their stadium. CSU has trouble filling their stadium for a game. It isn't for a lack of success at the D-1 level. That's a program that's becoming a perennial top 25 football program. They have won 3 of the last 4 Mountain West Conference championships. They can't fill a stadium. If UNC tries to compete for the CSU business (and they will have to), people would rather go to Hughes Stadium at CSU. It's about a 40 minute drive between Hughes Stadium at CSU and Nottingham Field at UNC. UNC is in Greeley, roughly the size of Grand Forks. Loveland is about 20 minutes to the west, another town the size of Grand Forks. Ft. Collins is about the size of Fargo/Moorhead. All in all, there are about 1 million (+) living in Northern Colorado - within an hours drive from both CSU and UNC. CSU has a good D-1 athletic program. Successful both on the field and off. Outside of football, they draw good crowds. Exceptionally well for the Women's basketball and volleyball programs. Butler-Hancock arena at UNC is a downscaled newer version of Hyslop at UND. Only without the larger additions for swimming and the office space. It's a glorified high school gymnasium. Yet it will host D-1 basketball and volleyball programs next year. That will be interesting, but I'll take my business to CSU. Moby Arena is much nicer and the quality of the competition is going to be much greater. For a long, long, long time. Like I said before, D-1AA is not D-1. Their teams outside of Football may be called D-1, but they aren't. Not even close. They won't be for a long, long, long time. I will give NDSU some credit. The Fargo Dome is a much better facility than anything UNC has to offer. They also don't have the competition for the sports $$$ in Basketball and Football in the Fargo-Moorhead area. However, I don't think that's enough to make the move to D-1AA. I think the others (including our beloved Sioux) in the NCC are doing the wise thing by waiting for a probable re-classification. Granted, there is a diluted quality to D-II at this time. But the NCAA won't allow the D-IAA schools to suck at the teat of the March Madness money for much longer. It's ridiculous to think that the D-1AA schools would share equally with legitimate "big-time" programs like Arizona, Michigan, LSU...and even CSU. As far as adding a new "NCC" D-1 conference. C'mon, be realistic. They don't want Cinderella at the dance. NDSU, UNC and the other's making the jump are going to be in for a rude awakening when they play with the "big boys". There will be no Prince Charming to rescue them.
  15. dbarker, I don't necessarily disagree with you. Because the Sioux are out of it, and UNC is in their lame duck year at D-II, I really don't care very much. I am just pulling for them because they are the last standing NCC school. They do seem to be the funnel for the rejects of CU and CSU. That might not be a bad thing for a D I-AA program. I hear a lot of talk about going D-I from the NDSU and UNC crowd. But let's face facts. All they are going to be is a glorified D-II school in football, and a doormat for the REAL D-I schools in the other sports. IMHO, that isn't D-I, that is D-IAA. Programs like the U of Minn, Colorado, Colorado State, even the University of Utah know the difference. Those schools don't exactly line up for the Weber State and Cal State Sacremento's of the college sports world for a fine day of football, much less a good evening of basketball. They have a long stenuous road ahead of them. When UNC goes D-IAA, I wouldn't give a plug nickel to drive the fifteen minutes to Hughes Stadium and watch CSU kick the Snot out of them. Buena suerte...........
  16. Yeah, that was a pretty odd situation. I tease my friends here that went to UNC. Apparantly, they submitted the ineligible list to the NCAA and a report of what had happened. It was a pretty big goof on the part of the compliance department at UNC. It seemed to appease the powers that be in the NCAA, so they get to play. I talked to a gentleman who works at the compliance department at Colorado State University. (Amazing who hangs out at Old Chicago's and watches Vikings games on Sundays!) He told me that the transcripts were sent to CSU with the passing grades, along with the previous failing grade. It sounds like the compliance department at UNC overlooked that failing grade. He said it was a mistake, not done on purpose. Lord knows the way UNC takes transfers (or, rejects?) from D-1 schools that person is probably extremely overworked in that position. I don't know the in's and out's of the whole situation, but it does sound like an honest mistake. I would like to think that the NCAA would cut some slack in other situations like that one. But I know better.
  17. Just an FYI, Despite a down year for the NCC, Northern Colorado won 49-28 over Central Missouri State...huge come from behind win. They were down 21-0, then outscored them 49-7 the rest of the game. I didn't go, but heard the results on the radio on the way home today. I"m not a fan of SCSU, but I think they should have had a shot at the playoffs. Just my $.05.
  18. Here is Herb Brooks quote from the Herald, "I told him since he was the best player, he needed to go to school with the best tradition and facilities and coaching staff,
  19. Now I feel guilty for wearing that NDSUcks shirt while at UND. Oh well. I wore my Sioux Jersey (new logo) at work last week. I had a lot of compliments. Even if those opposed to the logo have to admit, it's a sharp logo design. The wierd thing, in this day of political correctness, it actually crossed my mind not to wear it on a casual friday. I was actually thinking of leaving it home because of a slight worry that "it was politically incorrect" to wear it. Even though here in Ft. Collins, CO not many people know about that controversy. Now if I can just convince the "powers that be" that Ashley Judd in her Kentucky hockey jersey IS appropriate for my screensaver. damn!
  20. Hey Goon, Actually, I am one of those bleeding heart liberal Democrats who quite frankly believes this country could use gun control, a national health care plan and a big cut in the defense budget and a reasonable welfare system. But, that's just me. I could probably sit down over a few good beers with you and reasonably sound out my position as well as listen to your cold conservative views. After a few beers, I would possibly think "jeez, you have a point, but I would rather stick to my opinion". You know what, that's why we have free "Democratic" elections in this great country of ours. What I don't understand is just what the hell these idiots are doing even bothering wasting their time and effort over thie name change issue. Didn't they see the Sports Illustrated poll? Don't they understand that there is barely even a trickle of support, much less a great uprising of support in their favor? It is obvious that their "leadership" doesn't get it. Why don't they focus their energy on actually trying to help out the tribes in North and South Dakota? Work on actual problems they have with health care, education, housing...etc. Obviously, these so called "leaders" are more interested in getting their names in the paper that actually attempting to get real issues resolved. If they had any political sense, they would use the name change issue as political leverage to create more scholarships and native american studies programs at UND and other institutions. (Which, no doubt they have anyway....) Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that quite a few of us "bleeding heart, knee jerk, radical Democrats" want to see the Sioux name stay at UND.
