The "roll out the barrel, roll out the barrel of fun" song that they play in Wisconsin?

I'm from Madison, and dislike the Badgers, so maybe I'll be the only one to find this funny, but I just thought I would share it. UW men's hockey: Badgers return to pack after latest loss The insult for the Badgers and their followers came courtesy of Kessel, the Madison who a year ago picked Minnesota over his hometown school. Jeered loudly both nights whenever he touched the puck, Kessel celebrated his first point of the season against UW by putting his left hand to ear and skating around the rink, all but inviting a final torrent of boos. "It was just a reaction," said Kessel, an 18-year-old projected to be a top-five pick in the NHL draft later this year. "I was getting a little hassled the whole game." Lucia cringed when asked about the gesture, but ultimately backed Kessel. "With how much grief he took all weekend, I can understand it," Lucia said. There was no such sentiment coming from the UW dressing room. "Maybe put your hand there for a second, but to skate around the whole rink doing that? I'm going to question his character for doing something like that," Badgers captain and Madisonian Adam Burish said. "If this were a different league, maybe somebody would have taken it a different way and taken it into their own hands." Since fighting is a no-no in U.S. college hockey, UW players left the Kohl Center this night feeling the pain of injury and insult. "It stings," Burish said. Should be interesting to see if there is any retaliation should they play each other again in the tournament...

Not that it really means much... but a positive in the student section "battle" and such from this weekend is that they put the words to the school songs up on the video fascia ring (where the ads normally are) so that people could sing along... I'm not sure if other people notice, but the people I was with did... and we had quite the song going in the student section...
-
What else was said in the post game interview... I didn't catch it. My take on the game... we appeared to be skating decently... the passing was AWFUL... lots of good hits... We just didn't seem to have a spark...
-
Earlier in the thread, when St Cloud scored thier second goal... people were saying that it bounced of Chorney and they don't blame Phil... can someone elaborate further... because at the rink it simply looked like Lamoureux just plain didn't stop the puck...

Thanks for the input... I am going to discuss this with our staff and take a look at the operational issues associated with this proposed activity. This may be a good way to get the rest of the crowd into "Fight on Sioux" and "Stand Up and Cheer". Thanks for taking the time to drop me a note. HAHA! We should for sure do that one!!!
-
Just so ya know, I emailed the general manager of the Ralph to ask who I would talk to about getting school song lyrics on the big screen... papers in the chairs, that's another deal... I'm not gonna print them all, pay for them all, and deliever them all... I don't have that kind of patience
-
The students don't know the songs, especially "Fight on Sioux"... we need to figure out how to get the words on the screen... but I have heard that it has been shot down in the past...
-
IMO the pulling in of the rest of the crowd did not go very well... they didn't cheer with us (unless we scored) and when we tried to start the wave it failed. Is it really that hard for some people, not even everyone, to stand up once a period during a break and clap?

I'm a current student and I really like Buning. I just think that he was put in a bad position. He inherited some really tough problems when he was hired. The student section was alright tonight. Behavior wise they were fine... Buning actually came by and thanked us. Lower bowl sat when they were supposed to sit, there was little swearing and no cheers with the f word. However, I did notice a few times when I turned to the person next to me and said "this place is deathly quiet" and when we scored someone would comment "wow... there are other people in here... and they're alive... they moved!" About the game... I am definatly impressed by Oshie and Jones as freshman. Stafford had a heck of a night too! The game was very entertaining... to say the least. I like Jones' emotion... but when he gets started, there isn't an off switch... it'll be interesting tomorrow. That kid must have said something that seriously pissed him off because they were fine when the ref had the two of them... but then all of a sudden you could see Jones trying to break free from the ref and go after him... Jones definatly said something to him on the way to the box, which the students loved. I did notice that when Jones went to the lockerroom Parise followed him... Finley appears to be getting more physical... Zelkin still sucks as a ref... SO many missed calls. Overall a good night, let's keep it up tomorrow!

I prefer the "you don't play hockey well" chant over the s##k chant, I think its more original. Also I'm personally not a WPoS fan either. I really don't think that is a deabte that you want to start...

Prpich is the Sioux's hard-knuckled warrior of the ice My favorite part: Some critics of Prpich's hardnosed play have called the Kenaston, Sask. native a "goon." Prpich addresses those critics with a sense of humor. "I laugh at it, because if that's the way they see it, there is nothing I can do," Prpich said. "I try to get in people's heads any way I can, and depending on the guy, it's going to take different measures." Perhaps the most memorable of those measures was Prpich's notorious goal celebration last season against Minnesota. After putting the puck in the net, Prpich took Gopher goalie Kellen Briggs' water bottle and helped himself to a drink. "I had a buddy in juniors who did it once, and he almost got beat up for it," Prpich chuckled. "I saw how much it rattled the other team, so I thought, why not try it and see how it goes."

Here are two of the articles from today's Dakota Student: Taking stock in fan behavior The DS View: "Flat-ass rules"

It wasn't Trupp... because I saw him when he was here over the Gopher series... My guess is that it is Brad Thiessen. I'm pretty short, and there is no way that this kid was 6'4"... if you are going to the game tonight, my guess is he'll be on the bench during warm up as past recruits typically have been... so check it out, but I'm pretty sure it's Thiessen. (not 100% sure why we need another goalie, but maybe he won't come next year??)
-
That could definatly be who it is...

There are definatly recruits in town this weekend. I saw Coach Eades giving some kid a tour... I'm trying to figure out who it is, but with little luck. Hopefully one of you can help. His jacket had what appeared to be a blue map leaf on it, and he was number 30. Anyone got any ideas? Perhaps someone from the midget tourney in town?

Sweet! I am totally going!

Here's the article from today's Grand Forks Herald... REA: Line in the stands AD bargains with students over REA behavior "I'd like to say I don't want to hear words here that I wouldn't hear in church, but I'd be naive," Buning said. It wasn't long before students asked what the limits might be. Andrew Howard, a graduate student, said he understands that students wouldn't be able to say some of the more vulgar four-letter words. But can they say "ass" or "bitch" or "hell," he asked, all words allowed in PG-13 movies. "The last time I checked in church, there's a lot of 'damns' and 'hells,'" Buning said by way of reply. "But if I hear another chant with the 'F' word, we've got a serious problem." If there is something in the Dakota Student tomorrow, I will post that as well...

UW men's hockey: Elliott hurt in practice Though nothing was certain, Eaves and his players left the Bob Johnson Hockey Facility assuming Elliott will not play Friday and Saturday when the top-ranked and first-place Badgers face second-place Denver in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series at the Kohl Center "We knew we were going to hit some storms on this journey, and we've hit a storm," Eaves said. Freshman Shane Connelly, whose only college experience was an exhibition game against the U.S. National Under-18 team in mid-December, would start in place of Elliott. After seeing Elliott go down, bellowing in pain, his teammates screamed profanities and fired slap shots into the side boards in anger. The practice rink then turned eerily quiet.

"No one is asking the students to act like this is church or study hall." Two things... first, yes, the student did get to speak a little. At first Buning just talked to us about what we could and could not do (ie stand, swear, act like drunk fools) but then they went to a question and answer format. For the most part the questions revolved around the number of seats that students have... which makes no sense, because we will never get more. I think my favorite question about standing came from a girl who wanted to know why we couldn't stand even though the school song says "Stand up and cheer..." Second... they actually did use the comparison to church with profanity... I believe they said that if it can't be said in church, it shouldn't be said here either.. but don't quote me on that
-
Not that it is any indication, but when he (Buning) was describing where we would be moved to he pointed to the end that we defend twice... where the visitor's section is currently in the upper bowl. Personally if we are going to move the student section, I would rather be at the end that we shot twice. And on a side note, I don't think moving the student section will help with the swearing at players in the penalty box because then we'll just yell at the goalie... Also, I noticed a few people that appeared to be reporters, plus news cameras... so if you are in the GF area, check your papers/evening news.

Just another note from the meeting (now that my computer finally works again)... someone asked about when the regular season ticket holders (meaning non-student) would be recieving this information... it was said that they will mail it out... didn't sound to convincing to me, but we'll find out. It was also said that this meeting was not to target the students, although it appeared to turn that way. They tried to stress that everyone in the Ralph is to be held to the same rules, although that could be an entire new thread itself. Overall, I thought the meeting went alright. They kept refering to us as "stockholders" in a "business"... I kinda felt bad for Buning, he was trying his best to answer the questions but it wasn't going to well. The student body president was there talking to the general manager of the Ralph so Buning would look to him for help, and he wouldn't be paying attention. There was a vote to see if students would rather move to the end and be able to stand, or stay in the current location and follow the rules (aka sit). There was no offical count, but they guessed it to be 65% to 35%. It was said that if moved, we would NOT lose any seats in the lower or upper sections. (not really sure where the upper section would be... seeing as the bar is at the end) I would guess the attendance at the meeting was 100-150 people... any other question, just ask and I'll answer to the best of my ability.

I don't know if I am biased because I am a student, but once again student behavior at hockey games has become an issue. I was just wondering what some of the other fans that have been to the Ralph's opinion of the student section is. In today's issue of the Dakota Student was the following memo: To: All Student Season Ticket Holders From: UND Athletics, REA Administration, Student Government RE: Student Fan Behavior at UND Athletic Events Date: Jan. 13, 2005 (yeah... it actually says 2005... it's not my type-o) Dear Student Hockey Fans: All season ticket holders are required to attend a MANDATORY meeting on Wednesday January 18th at 6:00 pm. We will meet in the lower bowl student section at REA. At this meeting UND and REA administration and staff will once and for all lay out our defination of acceptable behavior at all UND athletic events. Items to be discussed at this time will be: 1. Standing or obstructing the view of other fans 2. Vulgarity addressed to officals, visiting teams, event employees 3. How to properly show respect to officals and visiting teams 4. Excessive alcohol consumption UND and REA want to keep the excitement and enthusiam the students bring to the game, but the price you are asking to pay for this atmosphere is too much. Current and future seating plans will be determined by your wwillingness to conduct yourselves in an acceptable manner. We thank you in advance for attending this meeting. Sincerely, Tom Buning Director of Athletics Jody Hodgson REA General Manager
