If it had been known four months ago, you don't think that would have helped USD's FL recruiting even more?
-
The people of Spirit Lake clearly affirmed the nickname by a great margin, yet there's still talk on this board about some kind of ridiculous punishment if the nickname is lost that would harm most the people on the reservations who clearly are not aligned with the PC professors? Not only is that mean spirited, but illogical.
-
That's a good get, but it would have been much better two-three years down the road so it could have been a value to Florida recruiting.
-
Where's the press in revealing this type behavior? The anti-nickname sect has been on an all-out campaign to deface and defame everything about UND to different organizations, like the NCAA, the press, accrediting organizations, the Summit League, the U of Minnesota, the U of Wisconsin, etc. etc. What could they possibly do next that's more destructive? Should we be in business of appeasement of this type behavior?
-
Much more natural pairings are UMKC and UMSL - both large universities in the same University System, in cities that are natural rivals, and they share I-70. The Summit wanted SIU-E because of St. Louis' media, potential host for tournaments, and as a rival for WIU. UMSL's case is stronger on paper.

Isn't he going to Northern State for basketball? There are a number of late bloomers out there that are getting DI looks: Nate Wolters

If there ever is an long-term agreement on the Sioux nickname, I would hope that a reservation vote would be required to dismiss the nickname - not merely council action. That would limit any chance the nickname is at the whims of an activist council (i.e. Standing Rock). It would also seem that the Fighting Sioux name will now have an even more heroic status to it - a politically powerless alumni base and a small band of indigenous people take on the NCAA and the PC left and win. That is not supposed to happen.
-
The sadistic tendencies of that portion of NDSU fans who enjoy "anything-to-hurt UND" had to have taken a major fist to the gut - especially after all time and effort they're invested into other message boards inflaming the whole situation. As far as dropping the name now, how can that be done when Sioux like Eunice Davidson came forward and put their names and reputation on the line in support of the nickname? A portion of her letter to the editor:
-
If after all the garbage, lies, hearsay that has been thrown at the nickname by opponents and Spirit Lake affirms the nickname, Spirit Lake will show a remarkable display of moral resiliency: that racial and ethnic divides can be mended. Ironically, I'm more hopeful for the nickname now. The nickname opponents have disgraced any semblance of dignity that they so espoused. The worst accusations have been placed on the table, and if Spirit Lake rejects them - unity can abound.

UBC NCAA membership and DI Hockey delayed at least another year: UBC defers NCAA decision over costly, 'inappropriate' accreditation issue

Any idea how they're funding the band expansion and transportation? San Diego State and Fresno State would almost certainly require a charter plane - same day and back (?).

Someone may need to mention that there's still a DI moratorium on moving up until 2011. This probably means Grand Canyon will not pursue a football program. Independent programs in the West,: GCU, CSU-Bakersfield, Seattle, UVU, with Denver (soon to be out), and SUU looking elsewhere Grand Canyon to DI?
-
Often wondered why MSU-Moorhead hadn't publicly tossed this idea out before. If they had to drop football to sponsor DI hockey, they'd be very much ahead in publicity/attendance.

The first year they are FBS, they won't have an automatic SunBelt schedule. USA Jaguars

Hammer, Please reread the posts, instead of placing your own emotions and preconceived notions to what was written. No one took pot-shots at Walaker or was ever advocating that Fargo would need to self-fund the project. Yeah, GF had it easy.

I shouldn't be posting this in a basketball thread, but politics - and leadership, just as much as money, affects how and when flood prevention is implemented. To build Duff's Ditch around Winnipeg, there was huge opposition and political problems delayed any action for 12 years after the 1950 flood before any construction even started: Opponents to 'Duff's Ditch' Silent Now For Grand Forks, the original plan was to build a diversion ditch around East Grand Forks (using the natural Red Lake River coulee - the Red Lake used to empty in the Red north of EGF ), and that ran into huge opposition from Minnesota interests. A diversion around GF in North Dakota was just too expensive, so GF's only feasible option was dikes/floodwalls + English coulee diversion. Drawing those floodwall lines became an explosive political minefield that leadership had to walk through. As Cedar Rapids is experiencing, the aftermath of a flood and post-flood planning takes more leadership to maintain citizen repoire than any thing before. To Walaker's credit, he emphasized flood control even with his mayoral campaign. Actually getting all the parties to agree to any one plan and to buy into a local property tax will be a task greater than the 2009 flood work.

New York Times: Is a catastrophe averted an opportunity lost? Walaker continues his way with words: Perhaps not so jealous of the 6 ft crest underprediction by the weather service in 1997 or the Billion or so in property damage.

Saturday, was frustrated as any Sioux fan about the "historic" seven overtime Lax game infringing upon the Sioux telecast. But, sometimes there's opportunity purposedly placed in the front of our face and, out of frustration, we reject it instead of wondering why this is happening. It's like a metaphysical principle. On that note, thought an old thread needed to be resurrected.

Really poignant piece from CNN: CNN Commentary: Fargo's Faith Cannot Be Destroyed

Most of the tributaries between Halstad and Grand Forks have already crested. The Red at Grand Forks is already flowing at 2.5 times the capacity that Fargo is experiencing, so for the GF crest the tributary contributions are in many respects more predictive than the localized situation in Fargo. The Sandhill at Climax is an exception, but it's flow contribution is small: The Red Lake at Crookston is now at minor flooding level, which is great news for GF. The Goose at Hillsboro: The Marsh at Shelly:
-
In what should be encouraging news for Grand Forks, the Red Lake River at Crookston has been dropping significantly over the past 12 hours. In 1997, the Red Lake River flow at Crookston exceeded the flow that's projected through Fargo this year. Hoping and praying that the Red at Fargo crests soon.

The University of South Alabama announced it's first schedule, which includes a hodge-poadge of schools. In later years when they're officially IA, they have scheduled games with Tennessee, NC State, and Navy. This year, USA wouldn't be a very good game, but it would be creative scheduling.
