Living in Maryland (30 miles west of Baltimore), I have a different view on this in that almost to a fault, almost every Baltimore fans has a dislike Bob Irsay, the owner of the Colts who moved from Baltimore in the middle of the night. Several took that frustration out on the Colts as a team but it was mostly directed at the owner but the team suffered the dislike because of it. Think how Cleveland felt about its team leaving and going to Baltimore. Most football fans in both cities have a dislike of the owner who moved the team but have embraced the new teams. In a sense, when do local fans support a team that is competing against the local team? One problem that this 'settlement' has is that it accepts the notion that the name is 'hostile and abusive', even though it has the NCAA specifically state that it didn't find this at UND, by accepting the punishment (i.e. changing the name), UND accepts that it has been as the NCAA claims. In addition, since using the name of a tribe is declared as such, and UND has agreed to change its name because of this, Dakota is also a name of a tribe and puts UND back into the same situation. This could become an endless spiral.

I agree. If UND keeps it only through threats, then the opponents were correct.

If you argue that the name is racist, you also need to take this view on the other names. For example, the NCAA used Wisconsin as an example. At first glance it appears that the name is because of an animal but it in reference to workers. The team's nickname, 'Badgers,' was borrowed from the state of Wisconsin. The territory was dubbed the 'Badger State,' not because of animals in the region, but rather an association with lead miners in the 1820s. Prospectors came to the state looking for minerals. Without shelter in the winter, the miners had to 'live like badgers' in tunnels burrowed into hillsides. From http://www.uwbadgers.com/traditions/notables_120.html#bucky Likewise, the use of Vikings, Cardinals, Saints, Miners, Battling Bishops, Britons, etc. should have this rule applied as well as they are all groups of people. Somehow people are only selective. In addition you then get into the animal rights issues. And if the use of various names such as Sioux are considered racist, than so you must also look at names such as Cowboys as potentially being racist as well. There is no end to what people can find to be racist. I think it is more racist to follow a policy of ignoring and believing that the history and life of these people don't exist where the only time you hear or read about them, if you are lucky and the names haven't been lost to history, is in the history books than using them as examples of groups of people who have succeeded against various odds. The use of the name keeps these people at least in people's thoughts.

Wow! Bison fans talking smack (read the Great West thread) about Montana on a Montana board as well . Why am I not surprised?

I'd be just a little careful with that statement as there are many variables that could make the renovation extremely expensive. Consider that the building could have been built with asbestos. At the time of the building, it would have been legal but it is illegal now and it is expensive and time consuming to remove given the current laws. I'm not saying this is the case for the building but that there could be hidden factors that may make renovating older buildings much more expensive than expected. I read the banter with interest but since I live in Maryland, I really don't have a position on this other than noting that costs may sometimes be higher than expected.

SIOUX VS GOPHERS - LOSER GOES HOME, WINNER TO ST LOUIS
gjw007 replied to AZSIOUX's topic in Men's Hockey
Looks like a good year to be seeded third in the regionals (UND, Michigan State, Maine). Congratulations to the Sioux! -
Yes, it is hard to watch the games in Maryland. Thanks.

I had this happen as well. Is there a white bar showing just below where you enter the URL. If so, if you right clink your mouse, selection install the ActiveX and the video will work. At least it did for me.
-
Sure. Why not? It is a U.S. territory and Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. Given its location, it would be hard to schedule teams due to the cost of transportation.
-
Perhaps, but any team is going to have difficulty traveling to Alaska no matter what. One solution would be to have back-to-back away series with the Alaskan teams so that the teams just stay there for the week. Of course, it does mess up going to class but may give them plenty of time to study. I don't necessarily think this is the best solution but there is a need to look outside-the-box for a solution. The million dollar question is what can be done to keep the CHA viable?
-
Perhaps a way to strengthen the CHA and enhance home-and-away games within each leaque would be to move the Alaska schools into the CHA (and perhaps 1 other from each leaque). The CHA already has a huge transportation cost with it diverse geographical area but maybe the NCAA could help with some of the cost. It would strengthen the CHA and not hurt each existing leaque.

Thank you.

Score please (kind of hard to get it here in Maryland). Thanks.

It's all a matter of comparison. I would have expected ND to be lower but it appears to be compared to wages which also tend to be lower. I live in Carrol County, MD and some of the counties in the region are as follows: County - % Federal - Rank Arlington - 15.03% - 27 Montgomery - 14.97% - 28 Fairfax - 14.89% - 30 Falls Church - 14.44% - 37 Fairfax City - 14.06 - 45 DC - 13.88% - 52 Howard - 13.50% - 63 Carroll - 10.51% - 311 One thing it does indicate is that there is some wealth in this area.

Has the NCAA actually made a proclamation on this? It seems that all the information is coming from schools that feel that since they can't get into the NCAA field, they are eligible for the NIT yet the NIT is owned by the NCAA. A message repeated a million times is no more true the millionth time than it is the first time. Still, as noted, if it is true it does give teams something to play for.

Graduated from East Grand Forks, lived in Grand Forks until 1989, attended UND in the late 70's, and currently live about 30 miles west of Baltimore (roughly the same north of D.C.). Graduated from the University of Maryland (University College).

All I can gather from this is the situation at Dartmouth is pretty sad.
-
I would agree with the Sioux teams of the mid-70s being the best as I attended UND during this period (mid-to-upper 70s) but the overall win record of UND suggests that it has been successful more often than not. The demise of the NCC may be due to scholarship cuts but only in the sense that in the 70s, it would have been impossible to see Crookston or other similar schools be at the same level as UND. As such, it was only a matter of time before schools such as UND and NDSU began to look at moving up, something they should have done in the 70s. Given the potential for SDSU and USD to follow, and UNO to move to the MIAA, it left the possibility of the NCC's demise should any of the major schools decide to leave, something that is now happening.

Why respond to him/her. Just ignore the posts by warrior_08. It's distracting to the rest of the thread for finding out what is happening in the game.
-
As far as another team, you didn't specify division but Tiffon is 7-0 or 8-0 with only one team, Hillsdale at 4-4, that doesn't have a losing record. You can look at www.d2football.com and there is some interesing information on its opponents under the GLIAC section. As Dave noted, NDSU's schedule did look tough to begin with and UND knows something about how an oppontent can appear to be strong but turn out weak by looking at the year they scheduled and played Mesa who turned out to be terrible that year but was good the year before.
-
As stated by others, congrats to NDSU for its win over Ball State.
-
Yes, so much I put him/her on ignore.

Is there some way to have this system just ignore post by warrier_08?

I think it would be good to renew the rivalry. It's good for both schools and the state of North Dakota.

Now really, did you have to bring Captain Kangoo into this? Next thing you know you'll add Mickey Mouse!
