  10. I think by the numbers, Karl Goehring had the best career as a goalie at UND, but after that, it's a little fuzzy. I've got Jordan Parise in my all-time top five; but how do you rate them? Listed by number of wins.... Goehring, Karl '97-'01 80-20-13 .765 win pct. .918 sv. pct. 2.23 GAA 15 SO 1 title Casey, Jon '80-'84 52-20-4 .711 win pct. .910 sv. pct. 2.89 GAA 3 SO 1 title* Parise, Jordan '03-'06 48-17-7 .715 win pct. .921 sv. pct. 2.10 GAA 9 SO Jensen, Darren '79-'82 46-22-3 .669 win pct. .894 sv. pct. 3.41 GAA 1 SO 2 titles Belfour, Ed '86-'87 29-4-0 .879 win pct. .915 sv. pct. 2.43 GAA 3 SO 1 title *Darren Jensen was in net for the 1982 championship game There are other goalies to consider on the basis of wins (Kvalevog has 52, Brower 47, Waselovich 44, Dickson 43, Kollar 41), but they barely won half of their games and their other numbers don't stand up upon comparison. Bob Iwabuchi had a good couple of years (28-13-1 .892 2.81), but I'm sticking with these five guys, and I have them in this order: Goehring (doesn't matter how big you are, just stop the puck) Jensen (hard to argue with two titles) Belfour (only one year, but what a year!) Parise (great numbers across the board) Casey (doesn't win head to head comparison with Parise) Discuss..... Sioux18
  11. The lowest ranked team overall*. There's no limit on the number of teams one conference can send to the tournament. Sioux18 *We could have a discussion about how the committee doesn't use the PairWise rankings in exactly the same way that we see them listed, although for the purposes of this discussion, the second choice you gave was the correct one.
  12. Alright, let me take a crack at this.... First of all, the brackets are *not* set. The articles on this and other sites are speculative, and only include games played up until this point. While a few teams are mathematically assured of a berth in the NCAA's, all of the regional seedings and matchups you see are "if the season ended today", which we know it doesn't. That being said, here is the process.... Each of the six leagues sends its postseason tournament winner to the NCAAs. In some leagues, not all teams make the postseason tournament, but in the WCHA, all 10 teams have a shot. The Final Five are the five teams that win their first round matchups (#1 vs. #10, #2 vs #9, etc.). Teams are reseeded, and #4 plays #5 on Thursday of the Final Five, with the winner advancing to one of two semifinals, and you get the rest of that. In the two so-called "weak sister" conferences, Atlantic Hockey and College Hockey America, we expect only the playoff winner (i.e. no at-large berths) to make the NCAAs, as only Holy Cross (Atlantic Hockey) is even a team under consideration in the PairWise (currently 26th). So we really only look at the top 14 teams in the PairWise, because two spots are taken by these two conferences. Normally, teams in the top 14 will win the postseason tournaments, because they are the best teams. So, for example, in the WCHA, if Wisconsin (#1 right now), Minnesota (#2), Colorado College (#6), or UND (#10 after last night's win) win the Final Five, these teams are not costing anyone a spot because they would make the tournament anyway. But if Minnesota-State Mankato were to win the thing, then you only look at the top 13 teams, because they have essentially taken an at-large berth away from someone else. We won't really know who the bubble teams are until the weekend of the postseason championships, but those numbers 12-15 will be watching very carefully. The other thing to consider is that the results of those games (even the third-place games) can change the comparison wins and result in one team jumping over another in the PairWise. All of these PairWise rankings are subject to change, of course, so don't read too much into someone saying that Minnesota is going to dress in UND's locker room in the West Regional. It's the first week of February, after all. Hope this helps. Sioux18
  13. I gave it to Bill Prout after the Saturday game. We had our mixer at Sugar's (Holiday Inn) before the game on Saturday, and he and I had made arrangements for the trophy presentation. For those of you who haven't seen the Cup, it's a pretty sweet creation. I'm a little sad that it's not in my basement anymore. Oh, well, there's always next year. And for those of you who are still confused, the Cup is awarded to the winner of the regular season series between St. Cloud State and UND. (Not sure what we'd do in the event of a tie....) Anyway, so there's lettering on the cup from last year that reads "2004-2005 UND 3-0-1" and this year will read "2005-2006 SCSU 3-1-0". There's room for 8 or 10 more years on the silver of the trophy, and then plaques can be attached to the wood base. After 20 years or so, we'll have to add to the base of the Cup. But it'll just look sweeter as the years go by. Thanks again to Skeeterman for creating the Cup and for starting this tradition. Sioux18
  14. Remember, we're only looking at players who haven't already been drafted. That means Finley (WSH), Chorney (EDM), Oshie (STL), Kozek (ATL), Watkins (DAL), and Lee (OTT) from UND, and Anderson (PHI), Wheeler (PHO), and Stoa (COA), along with Frazee (NJD), whom we didn't see, are exempt from this discussion of the upcoming draft. That leaves us with Alexander, Jones, Martens, Miller, and Duncan from UND, and Bostrom and Kessel from Minnesota, to compare with Toews. Although Jones had a good weekend, he's undersized by NHL standards (at least right now) at 5'10" and 187. I thought Duncan wasn't the impact player we've seen before, and we all know (or we're told) that Kessel is the number one pick. Bostrom had a good weekend, but I'd still take Toews. Dave

  16. The key phrase in the news release is that participants will be "players...who have exhausted their eligibility". I take that to mean players who have already played their last college game; i.e. they are not playing for the championship the following day. Sioux18
  17. This is most certainly not true. UND won both the WCHA league title and the national championship in... 1963 (Tied for 1st) 1980 1982 1987 1997. There was no league affiliation in 1958-1959. Old W.I.H.L. had disbanded in March of '58 and after the 58-59 season, the WCHA was organized. The Sioux finished second in the league in 1999-00, but won the Final Five championship and the national title. I'll take first in the league if it's ok with the rest of you.
  18. This is great work, and I have tried to figure out the rotation as well. It is my understanding, though, that Duluth and Tech are paired (fairly close - up and over the Great Lakes), and the two "left over" are Mankato and Anchorage. I remember a Maverick fan telling me that their "partner" in the new system wasn't a rival by any means, but he hoped by playing Anchorage four times every year that it would turn into something. Anyone know for certain? Sioux18
  19. Denver got the higher #1 seed (slightly controversial), and will be the home team in the first semifinal. Minnesota will be the home team in the second game. The winner of the DU/CC tilt will be the home team in the final because they were both higher #1s than Minnesota. (DU #2 overall, CC #3 overall, MN #4 overall) When there was discussion about DU being seeded higher overall, the scope of the debate was its implication on the regional brackets, but now it also gives them advantage in a game *against* CC, who, by the strict pairwise numbers, should have been the #2 overall. Since the committee chose to "settle things on the ice", even though the other comparisons went to CC, they have given another advantage to Denver. Any thoughts on how much last line change helps DU? I would think that any time you can choose which forwards and D-pair to match with Sterling/Sertich, you're money ahead. Sioux18
