Every time I had an occasion to meet and greet a potential early-departure (Smaby, Greene, Bo, Parise, Stafford, etc.), I thanked them for their time (both at the event and their years at UND), and told them that I hoped they made the decision that was best for them. Inevitably, I got the "double take", and a sincere "thank you", as if noone had expressed those wishes to them before. Just food for thought. Sioux18

I don't like the "Overrated" chant for the same reason*. To me it says, "Ha ha! You can't be as good as people say you are, because WE can beat you!" Doesn't make any sense to me. *I have to admit, there were two games in '96 where I joined in. The Brian Bonin-led #1 in the nation Gophers came to town riding a 19 game unbeaten streak, and the Sioux (19-18-1 on the season) throttled Minnesota 8-2 and 7-5 on consecutive nights. Those of us in the student section heartily let Woog and the boys know that they were overrated. A special circumstance if ever there was one. Sioux18

I normally like what Brad Schlossman writes, but one thing struck me funny in the article from today's (March 29, 2007) Grand Forks Herald.... Accompanying the large photo in the article entitled "Duncan in Hobey Hat Trick" (Page 1D) is a note which reads, in part: Ryan Duncan has a 33.3 percent chance of becoming UND's first Hobey Baker Award winner since Tony Hrkac I'm not sure which is funnier: a) That Brad thinks we need help computing the fraction 1/3, as in "one of three finalists". OR b) That Brad thinks that computing said fraction gives us the actual percentage of Duncan's chances. I mean, it's not like we're pulling a ping pong ball out of a basket, people. The voting is complete and he will either be announced the winner or he won't. To say he has a 33.3 percent chance of winning is like saying that each of the 10 nominees had (before this announcement) a 30% chance of being in the Hobey Hat Trick, or a 10% chance of winning. I just thought it was a case of wanting to include some measure of his chances, but it was not well thought out. As they say, 41.2 percent of all statistics are made up in the middle of the conversation. Sioux18

Rule 4-2-e. When penalties are not in effect and not visible on the clock and one minor penalty is assessed to one player of each team, with an additional penalty or penalties (minor or major) assessed at the same stoppage of play, immediate substitutions on ice shall be made for an equal number of coincidental minor penalties (penalties assessed during the same stoppage of play) to each team so penalized. Alright, a couple of things here. "Without substitution" in the first sentence means that the teams skate 4 on 4; that is, the penalized players are not substituted for. In the second sentence, notice that there are additional penalties, and all of the coincidentals "cancel" in terms of how they affect the number of skaters on the ice. The only penalties that go up on the board (and are served without substitution) are those extra minutes for one side or the other. Hope this helps. Sioux18

The band's job is to get the crowd into the game. The crowd's job is to make noise along with the band. I know it's been said before, but the lyrics to the rousers and school song are not on the fascia ring and/or scoreboard enough to allow folks to learn them. I sang in the Bards, and have been going to games for over 25 years, so I know all the words, and have taught them to my wife, kids, friends, and others in my section. But that's not enough. Commit them to memory, and the songs will give you something to cheer about. This is often the case when the DOT line draws the penalty (which they do quite a bit). The #2 unit takes the first half of the PP while the #1s head to the bench and wait their turn. BTW, it would be interesting to keep track of which players draw the most penalties. I'm thinking primarily of "effort" plays, where the puck carrier draws a trip/hook/hold based on his ability to carry the puck and outwork/outhustle the defender. I'm not volunteering for such task , I just think it would be cool to see a stat like that. Sioux18

171 is the conference (WCHA) record. I looked far and wide and couldn't find an official NCAA stat for consecutive games played. i guess I could look in each conference record book, but I haven't done that yet. Sioux18

Don't see this discussed anywhere else.... Chris Porter has played in 164 consecutive games for UND. The conference record is 171, shared by John Johannson (UW 80-84) and Calvin Elfring (CC 94-98). The regular season will get Chris to 168, assuming nothing crazy happens. So there are a number of ways Chris can set the record with a little playoff success (the most number of playoff games we could play would be 10, counting WCHA and NCAA tournaments). Hopefully the boys will keep taking it one game at a time and put Porter into the record books! Sioux18
