  1. To me, the reason it's not as easy as this case you are pointing out to everyone here on this board is the simple fact that the NCAA is trying to push members of its organization around. I don't think anybody on here would deny that there are people on both sides of this issue, but to have an outside source(NCAA) make the decision for the University of North Dakota is what is bothering people the most. They have no right, in any such way, to force a school to change its name. This problem should be dealt with between the University and the tribes. And since the one tribe we are trying to communicate is being reluctant to that, it just makes it that much harder to come to a compromise between both parties. Why is it so hard for everyone to sit down at a table together, hammer out a compromise/contract, and everyone be satisfied, not just a small group of people?
  2. I was down in Winona for the game, and as far as I could see, there weren't many serious injuries...Kuper seemed to get a bit dinged up in the 1st half(either his left shoulder/hand/arm). He missed a few plays but came back to play solid. And I am pretty sure it was Beatty who had some ice wrapped on his ankle during the 4th quarter. Other than that, nobody got noticeably hurt from what I can remember. A lineman limped off in the 2nd half too, couldn't get a number though.
  3. I got 4 tickets for the game, but that was mainly due to the status of my dad in the Fighting Sioux Club....It sounds like they(Winona St.) were being pretty tight wads for letting go of tickets to visiting fans. Anyways, I put my name on a list last Monday(8/29) and I already got notified about the tickets. They were a hot commodidity from what I hear so if you don't have them by now, you might be too late. Good Luck
  4. Kessel doesn't play defense RIGHT now...Maybe that will change once he gets to college since he hasn't needed to be a two-way player...All the proof you need is to watch Kessel in any of the U.S. World Jr. Games at the Ralph last year and you can see that he isn't a great two-way player. He didn't back check constantly, he wasn't aggressive going into the corners to battle for the puck IMO. And these are facts that any person could see. Those characteristics are a few things that make a good two-way player and Kessel didn't do those at the World Jr's.
  5. Until you can play for a national championship or even a playoff game(2007 I believe)...your football team is playing nothing more than meaningless regular season games. It's good to when them, but what does it get them? Last year they were 8-3? and what did they get? A seat on the couch watching college football for another 6 weeks....I'm not bashing the program, because in the long run UND will do the same I believe. But to start gloating about how your program is the next Montana or the next powerhouse, please don't compare Montana and NDSU...Because they're not even close. Montana has a national title in D-1AA(2 I believe) and numerous playoff victories that mean something more than a victory over Southern Utah or Nicholls State. When NDSU gets to that level, then you talk all the talk you want and shut everyone up. Until then... Lefty
  6. Same high school....I think he has the tools to be a great offensive d-man..If anyone saw him at the state tourney, he had a highlight-reel goal from end-to-end that he took one on five and scored to completely change that game. He needs to work on the defensive side of the game, he uses his stick too much i believe, but that will come with development. This next year in the USHL will be a huge sign of how good a player he can be since he will be focusing on hockey only and not 2 other sports.
  7. Tradition: "The passing down of elements of a culture from generation to generation, especially by oral communication." Cling: :To hold fast or adhere to something, as by grasping, sticking, embracing." Sauce: "For people to cling to the name seems to minimize that history and the dedicated people who have played a role in creating that history." ---The definition of "cling" includes to embrace something or someone, which i think this University does as a whole. How has this university minimized the history of the Sioux people and minimized the people who have played a role in creating that history? Granted, some people aren't from this area, but a lot of people are and understand what this name means to this university. Don't assume that we know nothing about the Sioux tribe, it's people, or its history. You'd be surprised I think at what we do know or the amount of people that take the time to try to understand the history and culture of the Sioux tribe. You'd be suprised how many students take a class on Sioux history or Native American history in general because we are intrigued and interested in the topic. Thats what bothers me the most on this topic...everyone that wants to change the name basically says over and over that we don't understand the history or what the Sioux people did in the past...if thats the case, then maybe a member of the Sioux tribe or someone with vast knowledge of it should sit down one weekend and invite the entire community to a learning session about the Sioux tribe/people at REA. I think it would be beneficial for everyone. Another thing, ask any Sioux athlete who they play for and it will be for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux...Every player understands when they put on that jersey who they are playing for, there is a tremendous amount of respect shown by the players that put on those jerseys. They are honestly grateful and humbled at the same time. They realize the magnitude of the name and the logo that comes with it. Every coach tells them to honor them on their respective court/ice sheet/etc...exactly how they want everyone to remember them...as Warriors....They want to play with respect, courage, toughness, etc...and show everyone that they are truly honored to be wearing that jersey. So to say it's not about tradition, I think you're mistaken. Athletes take a lot of pride in what they do/say and who they represent as a whole. Each team has its own tradition, but the entire athletic program has a completely separate tradition with the Sioux name and logo that every team symbolizes and wants to play exactly like how the Sioux lived. Also, it would make a helleuva difference if we weren't called the Sioux, just like if the Gophers weren't called the Gophers. Everyone knows it would. If we changed the name, at the end of the national anthem everyone would still yell "Sioux" just like they do now. To have a few hundred/thousand people upset over the name compared to the the thousands that embrace it around here and the entire country I think is OK. That just means that everyone can have their opinion. It doesn't make my opinion any better than yours. We each get one vote. Welcome to the USA....Just one man's opinion though.

    Nick Fuher

This is just an update on Nick Fuher's injury...According to his dad who my mom works with, it took 36 stiches just to seal the eye up enough so that the eye could rest in the socket again....Also, I'm not sure whether Nick went down to Chicago or if a doctor from Chicago went up to Milwaukee to see Nick, but according to Nick's dad the doctor said there was no way Nick should be able to see out of that eye again. Just one doctor's opinion i guess...Nick and his parents flew to Phoenix today(Monday) to see an eye specialist and he was going to have another surgery on his eye Monday night. It seems like the team Nick played for is paying for everything and being real generous and helpful through all of this, so that's good to see. That's all I've heard so far today
  9. Please don't say that student's don't pay dues for their seats....I've paid close to $6,000/year to this University ever since I started going to school here 3 years ago...And that is because I am local kid...And I don't even have tickets to the games at the Ralph, I am lucky enough to work there and watch the games from a vomitory..My dad is FSC member and pays $1,100/year plus the money for the tickets. I know that doesn't equal out to be $6,000....To me the difference between students at the new Ralph compared to the Old Ralph are when students did stand at the Old Ralph nobody cared, because people didn't appreciate that building as much as they do the New Ralph. Now when a student stands at the New Ralph there is security instantly questioning them if someone complains about that student...Everything is about making the general public happy, and this arena is not about the general public, it's about the students because it is our arena, not the cities...It was built for the betterment of the University, and the city has reaped the benefits...Just My Two Cents as Well
  10. GrahamKracker "By the way, I didn't know they were the Redskins, I always thought they were the Knights, so i guess not "everybody", maybe just those in your circle. peace." LeftyZL "It's like the Central High School Knights here in town. They were the Redskins, but changed their name. You ask anybody now that knew Central and I will guarantee you that they will say they were the Central Redskins, not the Knights." GrahamKracker "We are not going to disappear when the name changes (even though I know some of you would like us to disappear now)." Just to clarify, if you're going to come off pissy and act like a 4 year old to me, make sure you read correctly what I wrote before you go off on me on another tangent. Your last quote seems to be directly related towards your attitude on what YOU believe our attitude is toward Native Americans. You seem to be extremely bitter towards everyone here with this nick name and I just don't get why. Maybe none of us here are Native American, but being around here educates us of the history of the Sioux and everything they went through in the past. I myself even took a Native American class here to better understand the history of it all. I think you underestimate the number of people on this campus that take pride in the Sioux name. Maybe we're not perfect, but nobody is. Can you tell me why the NCAA is looking at UND to possibly change their name, but not into Florida State? I would think we have more of a Native Heritage than Florida State does. Maybe we should all go after that school too until they change your name. Anyways, This school is more than a nickname. It's about getting an education. Personally, this nickname debate has gone on far too long. It seems to me the same people that dislike the name are the ones that continually bring it up. Yet, there really is no new information that is brought to anyones attention. If we didn't change it 5 years ago, why would we change it now? If you have this big of an issue with the name, don't bring it to a message board. You should know how most people on this board feel about the name already. Take it to a higher power.
  11. I can understand your position of why you think we should change the name, but in my 4 years of going to school here I have never seen a student disrespect the name or the logo. You ask around the conferences we belong to, and every other school envies our logo. It's a great honor to wear that logo on the player's uniforms and I'm sure they understand the significance of it as well. But as a side note, how come we don't hear about Florida State Seminoles or the Washington Redskins ever changing their name or being pressured to do so? I think if you took a poll of people around the area and the country that went to this school or are a native american, I think you would be surprised by how many people are in favor of keeping the name. Just because we'd change the name, doesn't mean people wouldn't still call us the Sioux. It's tradition, it's whats been engrained into our bodies. It's like the Central High School Knights here in town. They were the Redskins, but changed their name. You ask anybody now that knew Central and I will guarantee you that they will say they were the Central Redskins, not the Knights. It's all about tradition. Changing the name won't change the way people view our school. We are and will always be the Sioux.
  12. The problem with the hockey rink doesn't stem from playing basketball on it. The problem with the rink is the poor plumbing underneath the concrete(the pipes weren't put in properly)...On a side note, people on here need to quit chewing out REA for putting basketball in the main arena. Everybody who follows basketball understands that we need to have it in the Betty. From what I heard since I work there is that it's all the suite holders that complain because of the money they donate and pay, that they want to be able to see more events and feel entitled to. Thats why the only games played in the Ralph are conference games, none against Mayville St. or Lake Region. The Ralph doesn't want to make those people mad and lose money. On another note, our arena is being broadcast nationally this weekend for the whole country to see and everyone is complaining about the hockey team being forced to "practice" at a different arena. Granted it's not the best thing in the world, but you can't plan 2 years down the road that the hockey team is even going to be in the NCAA regionals. You gotta take the opportunity to showcase the arena nationally. Instead of all this complaining, the tix for the bball games are cheap and it's the best DII teams in the country. Lets go out and support them and make this university and city look good on TV this weekend.
  13. Here's my theory on the state tournament and I am from the East.....Until someone beats Minot, they're the team to beat. Everyone seems to be knocking the West because of how they've faired in the past, but until they lose, they're #1. Central's got a chance, but they're going to need a quick goal against Minot to get some positive energy for the team. Red River won't win it just for the simple fact that they don't want it as a team and the only reason they're even at the state tournament is because of some bogus penalties called by the refs(I was there). They weren't the best team on the ice that day against North and shouldn't even be here. Grafton and Bismarck are the sleepers in my opinion. Grafton is a very solid hockey team right now that played South extremely tough in the East final. If their one line can keep scoring and they get good goaltending, they got a shot to win it all. Bismarck is in the same boat, even though they have 10 guys that have scored over 10 pts., they rely on their one line for the most part and their goalie, whos been solid. But judging by the West final, the best they could hope for is another chance at Minot in the Finals. Minot has beaten the quality teams from the East this year, so I think they get the nod right now as the favorites. But they haven't played the East teams for quite some time and all 4 teams from the East are playing much better(maybe not RR) than they were around Christmas Time. Let The Games Begin.
  14. Just a few quick notes about the new gas station in town since I am currently employed by it... 1. Our gas price right now is $1.829, which is $.07 lower than anybody in the city. Also, if you pay with cash/check, we automatically take $.03/gallon off your bill for you. 2. If you've ever worked at a gas station before, you know that gas stations don't stay around b/c of their gas sales. Right now, we're making $.08/gallon profit on gas, which is the bare minimum you have to sell it for above cost. You make money on the sales inside your store, the candy, soda, food, etc. Thats where we make all of our money. 3. We figured out anyother gas station in town is able to match our prices for a week to 10 days and then they have to raise their prices b/c they can't stay at that level. We get our gas at a cheaper b/c the owners of University Station have their own fuel tankers so they don't have to pay a separate company to transport their fuel in. That's why our gas will be the lowest in town all the time. 4. We've been waiting for our sign to come for the past 6 weeks, but the first sign apparently cracked so they built a new one and that one should be put in by the end of this week or the early part of next week. 5. Lastly, I'm not saying this just because I work there, but if you haven't stopped in to try the deli food, you should. We've got breakfast croissants, biscuits, and pizzas, subs, salads, wraps, mexican, pizza, ice cream, deep-fried foods, hot dogs, pretty much everything. And I've tried most of the subs and they're all good. I haven't heard any complaints about our food, so I would recommend that you at least come and try something off of our menu. Prices are reasonable, the wraps are on sale right now.
