  1. Real role players like the walk ons that were two of the captains for UND this year? Can you also point out the #1 prima donnas on UND's team?

Our fan base is so unbelievably spoiled.

Actually the two walk-ons you speak of help prove my point.   The two you speak of were fully engaged and committed to the UND program and willing to do whatever was required of them to win.   The lineup needed more just like them.

  2. I disagree with the whole parity argument.   This is all about having both good goaltending and role players in your lineup, which is the downfall of the teams that load up with a bunch of #1 prima donna picks.    I wonder how many more times the so called elite teams will have to get beaten in the playoffs by hard working blue collar teams that play better two way hockey before they figure this out.  I remember a time with UND had real role players and those Sioux teams polished off plenty of better on paper teams.  Have a great summer.

  3. So this individual is still happy that his team left for the Big preTENder conference.    Good for him

From that Gopher fan quoted above: "Now that its over, my focus will be on wishing UND a slow, painful death, hopefully before the Frozen 4. The only good thing about tonight, for me anyway, is that we didn't lose to UND."

I do not wish to visit the recesses of this guy's psyche. Or his basement. Ever.

There's life. Then there's the distraction in life called hockey. Too often that line gets erased or blurred.

  4. I completely understand the frustration, but it seems that every conference in country has an officiating problem--at least the fans constantly complain about it.   If that is true (and I admit I can't prove it), then improving matters would have required some major changes, not just by NCHC but throughout college hockey.   That is a complicated matter and probably expensive.   Necessary, perhaps, but far more complicated than just giving some refs the boot.

At least that's the way it looks to me.   And I'm never wrong, you know.

Having a retired NHL official in charge when all of the leagues restructured would not have been that expensive.  They have pensions already and most of them probably would have welcomed the opportunity to stay involved in the game.  More importantly they could hold the old duds accountable and teach the up and comers the right way to officiate.

  5. What's your solution then?

Solutions were available to the league two years ago but instead it hired from within the same pool to oversee the officiating.   They could have hired a retired professional official who wasn't all huggy touchy feely with your Sheperds, Andersons etc.   There is still no accountability so please share with us why you think we had to be left with the same old stain on the game.

  6. With it being a part-time gig, it isn't like there was a whole shelf of new tools to choose from.  Not a chance the league could afford to put a full roster of referees and linesman on the payroll and train them the way people want it done.  The idea of trying to be a feeder system is intriguing, but again, I think you are going to run into the same issues.

With that attitude it is not much wonder nothing has changed.    It certainly didn't have to be the same lunatics running the asylum.

  7. It was obvious to us old time fans that by the 1990s the officiating was not keeping up to the improved caliber and speed of NCAA hockey.   Given the quality of the WCHA teams it was especially evident that a change was needed.   The restructure two years ago provided an opportunity for change, but what did the NCHC do.   It filled the shed with exactly the same old useless tools.   A missed opportunity that I view as a self-inflicted wound, which is why I have stopped ranting about it.

  8. I was at the game last night and got to hear the usual Gopher fan stupidity at the X.  I got to hear banter from a Gopher fan early on about MSU's "soft schedule"...people who speak on opinions without fact really irritate me...MSU's Strength of Schedule is significantly more difficult than Minnesota's.

It reminded me of the age excuse- I had to hear about how much younger the Gophers were than everybody else last year and that's why they didn't win the title- again, facts are stubborn things- you can average out the ages of teams on hockeydb...if the average age is 20 vs 20.25...big excuse...

MSU has obviously done a great recruiting job and seem to have found the right mixture of talent and sandpaper.  I like the players that UND currently has but often wish we had a few more of the latter blue collar types.  Besides talent, National Championships equally require hard work and knocking the other team off of their game.

  9. That was a tongue-in-cheek post by Rednek, bale, in reference to Lucia's comment about the age of Mankato's players. Somewhat similar to the company line last spring when some Gopher fans felt a title was a done deal against a school they'd never heard of, then when Union started rolling MN, the discussion turned to how old the Union players were. Nevermind that the two oldest players on the ice were wearing M's on their jerseys...

So after all these years they are still playing the "We were beat by older Canadians" card?   Maybe it's time to send their two soft Ollies back to the Fjord.

  10. Minnesota's in a bit of a pickle now...with the B10 Tournament in Detroit, they may be in trouble.

But the Don looked so happy in the post interview game with Berenson.  Perhaps he is thinking that it is far better for his team to get their reality checks from Michigan instead of UND, so he doesn't get any froth in his hair from the GPL faithful.

  11. My observations on Team USA:

Fasching -- he'd go to the corner but never came away from the boards with the puck.

Eichel -- he forgot he had teammates; he was trying to win it by himself

USA defense -- small, quick, but I saw nobody that I expect to have a 10-year NHL career (there were no "Cam Fowler" types)

USA powerplay -- I don't like the changes v. Russia; they should've left Schmaltz and Matthews together on the second unit; if Eichel needed a shooter on the first unit put Larkin there

I might be a homer, but guys I'd take from Team USA in order: Larkin, Schmaltz, DeLeo, Matthews. (You can keep Eichel and that goalie.)

We're on a SWE v. CAN crash course.

PS - Any of you pilot types available to get Nick Schmaltz back to GF in time for a game v. the U18s? :D

Larkin was definitely Team USA's best player for this tournament.

  12. Anthony DeAngelo looked pretty good on D...at least from what I saw of him.

DeAngelo did look good but not Jones, Trouba or Carson good.   He had the one of the few shots that did hit the net from the blueline and look at what happened.   You need a quarterback on the blueline for the PP that can hit the net at least half the time.   It just wasn't there with that corp.

  13. As I said after the Canada game this one of weakest D-Corps that Team USA has sent to the tournament in quite a while.  Did any one one of them actually get a shot on goal in that game as I can only recall shots into Russians or that were wide of the net.   As a result the forwards stopped sending pucks back to the point and it is not much wonder that some of them looked like they were trying to do it all on their own.

  14. Unfortunately this is a lot like reading a Maple Leafs thread following most of their games which in summary typically read:  "It must have been the officiating because there is no way that giving up 41 shots should have cost us the game".   Some of you might not like my opinion; however I would offer that your D is not as strong as in past years and some of the forwards are not playing good two way hockey.  Unless the forwards can compensate a bit so that the US plays less time in their own zone you will have a tough time getting through both the Russians and Swedes.

  15. According to the TSN studio analysts, Germany was (and is) far and away the worst team in the tournament. They were expecting a score of 9 or 10 to 0. It was essentially a 2-0 game - the 4-0 final isn't a true indication of how well Germany played.

If you believe the TSN analysts then you must also believe them when they say the Leafs are a playoff contender each and very year and when Buttons the Clown tells you that the Leafs Prospects in the tournament are the cat's arse.   The big shock for me was Slovakia beating Finland although one could use the hot goalie argument.   The Slovakian lineup is for the most part a team that plays in the Russian Junior league with only three or four draft picks themselves.  The Germans have for the most part played men\s hockey and it shows in their solid play.   Maybe the are worn down and will commit more turnovers tonight.  .

  16. The performance by Germany v. Canada tonight surprised me. I expected the Canadians to repeat Friday night.

You shouldn't have been surprised as Germany is a true 19 year old team and half their team are already playing men's hockey in various leagues.  Therefore they don't make as many junior mistakes and they can play really physical so any team that plays them has to feel fortunate if they escape their game without injuries.

  17. Im confused in watching the dinkytown footage from last night.

Is the U-S-A chant implying that Union is a bunch of Canadians?

According to The Don, a bunch of over-aged Canadians. LOL. As an aside, I have often wondered why the Boston Bruins fans like to chant USA when in reality most of their lineup is Canadian. players.

Also after seeing the heroes of dinkytown link I am left wondering why some say the Neanderthals are extinct:
